WARNING - You probably don't want to turn the sound on for this video.
They can cause permanent hearing damage, and are banned across most of Europe and for War.
But of course they use them on innocent people.
Same thing happened in Serbia in a mass protest against the government. What came out of it?
Absolutely nothing!
Weekend protests are a joke
Well, there was this one thing that came out of it a couple of weeks ago...
If you're talking election, sound gun or not they would have won anyway, people in general were dissatisfied with Vucic and student list was pretty much the first opposition that was loud enough and marketed themselves well enough, and to be clear is only tangentially related to the student movement.
People on lemmy who only hear about the protests now from tabloids are giving it too much credit, it was a mess both internally and externally, a mess that's also been dead before the recent election for at least a year
It certainly contributed. I know people personally that went hardcore pro-student because of the episode, concluding the students avoided a bloodbath by pulling the crowd away.
Can't this expensive equipment be countered with ear plugs?
It’s a little more involved, but generally good ear protection and a convex circular plastic shield (such as say a skylight fitting from a hardware store) will protect you and bounce most of back to them.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CXKTBQBugIA - TechingIngredients does a good testing of counter measures.
It'd be a shame if someone showed up with a parabola
They also use grenades that cause hearing damage and send plastic fragments and a metal detonation cylinder into peaceful crowds indiscriminately. They're terrorists.
Honestly I would never want to drive the sound cannon van. I can't think of a police position where people would feel more motivated to drag them out and beat them to death.
I'm pretty sure this is a riot. like definitionally. or, I guess they're an organized group running around hurting people for no reason? is that not a riot?
I don't see any evidence of "hurting people for no reason" in that video. Do you see the large, unbroken, glass windows on both sides of the street?
The vast majority of the protesting is now peaceful. The protestors quickly realized the breaking and looting was working against them in the media, and in court cases around protest bans.
Here is an article from the BBC on Thursday's protests. They were the largest so far, until yesterday. The BBC only found a few small examples of breaking: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckx2qzv835pgo
Source: I live in Montpellier. I've been in the peaceful marches and walked through the tear gas, photographing.
Regular Tuesday in France
Just lovely, I hope they’ll riot even harder. LRAD was also used during protests in Serbia in March 2025.
standard police doctrine in america.
You'd think being a cop in France, you'd rather not try to create more work days where you have to put on the armour and get all sweaty doing the yeoman-work of fascism. Guess everywhere's got morons.
Idk about France, but here usually cops that volunteer to do protest control enjoy it. Hence the bashing in of heads, mutilations, etc.
I've heard lots of (unverified) accounts of riot cops going out of their way to get crowds violent during these days' protests for example.
Ah. I hadn't bargained on them just being unfathomably evil and beyond redemption.
