When it falls sound asleep I stab it in a foot or it's neck or it's eye.

I think I eventually do enough damage after it's hobbled so it bleeds out.

Smear your shit on the knife so it eventually dies from the infection or gets weak enough you can take it out while it's passed out.

Ah, good ol' shitblade.

Humans used to hunt mammoths, and these fuckers don't even have a thick layer of fur armor. We used to hunt mammoths, because we were so fucking good at it we killed every last one of them.

I'm using my knife and making an atlatl, some spears smeared in shit, and I'm going hunting. Every time this bastard goes to sleep, he's getting a spear with a side of gangrene lodged in him. Fucker's missed out on 60 million years of techtree development, and has no reply to ranged strikes.

It's always funny when people overestimate their own ability to fight an animal.

Yeah bro i could fight a gorilla.

I don't think i could, honestly, but spears and shit from the hut would be my best guess. Or wait until it sleeps and ram it through the eye with full force and run like a motherfucker. In movies they often spear big animals and they live for a long time and cause havoc, i would assume a spear through the brain isn't good no matter the size.

There's a fossil of a t-rex that's believed to have been very old when it died (like, 28ish). It had evidence of injuries all over it, including having been stabbed through the back of the skull and into the brain by another T-rex's tooth (the scar was old and healed, so it survived being bitten in the brain)

I wouldn't bet on anything but a long drawn out campaign against it

The real problem is we dont know what a live T-Rex looks like. It could have fur or feathers, it could have wings or wild talons on its hands. What are the odds their arms are as useless as we think they are for real?

I don't care if is has feathers, or long grabby arms, I'm waiting for it to fall asleep, and chucking a spear at it, and running, every single time until it dies of bloodloss, gangrene, or exhaustion.

Does the T Rex even understand what I did? Ranged attacks didn't exist for 65 million years after it went extinct, does something that evolved to hunt slow, armored herbivores have any response to ranged hit and runs? The many species of megafauna humans hunted to extinction before the invention of writing suggests no.

Guys I just checked t Rex extinct easy money they already ded

Never saw the jurassic Park sequels huh? There are islands with dinosaurs on them.

I'll do it cause every T Rex is already dead

Do not leave the hut. Eat like an animal and throw your shit from the hut at the T-Rex's face. Hopefully it will get sick and perish on it's own from explosive T-Rex diarrhea.

It doesn't say the T-Rex has unlimited food either. Wait until day 29 when it's starving and can hardly move anymore.

That T-Rex is missing its feathers

T-Rex were believed to be fast for their size, but they couldn't take sharp turns.

I'll just show up with a flu.

Scenario didn't say you had to stay in the hut, or that you couldn't leave the the arena, or that others couldn't do the fighting for you with other weapons.

I would wait and hide, allowing the T-Rex to tire itself out. Then one night, when the T-Rex was especially tired and soundly asleep, I would carefully climb into the T-Rex’s cloaca. There I would stay for the rest of the month.

That’s it, you can keep the 500 million. I’ve already won.

Literally why humans (and our ancestors) were able to put themselves at the top of the food chain.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persistence_hunting

Prose so beautiful it brought a tear to my eye.

Clown in ambulance style? How big is a T’s asshole for a grown ass man to fit in??

If you do it right, t-rex will learn what it's been missing and welcome you back with arms wide open.

Wait can a T-Rex go an entire month without food? Are they feeding the thing while I am in there?

As always, the T-Rex also gets fed, an indestructible shelter, and a hunting knife.

As is tradition.

Id be more worried about the hunting knife if he didnt have such tiny arms

Or thumbs

I will craft a rudimentary instrument using any materials available in my hut and using my very high charisma I will seduce the beast.

I think some of the other suggestions are better, but my first thought was burying the knife in its food supply (assumings it's being given like entire dead cows or something) and hoping it takes a big enough bite to swallow it.

I imagine that blade going through the digestive track has a good chance to kill it.

Decent plan. However, you are giving up your only weapon so you better hope it's enough.

I can't imagine killing a hippopotamus with a knife. I don't care if it's sleeping well after I attempt to attack it. One result, every time.

Now I'm imagining a far more dangerous monster, several times larger and faster. Yeah, it's just not a weapon in my mind.

Honestly, if it eats entire raw bones, I don't think a little knife would do much.

Meh, the esophagus is certainly tough enough for that but stomach acid can do a number on bones. The story is different for metal depending on stuff I don't know much about, but I imagine a quality blade would stand a good chance. And intestines should be softer than bone. And depending on how fast they digest, you might get a few tries at least... Idk I think it's a decent plan really

Do I get to choose the food and can I use it towards the production of improvised weapons, including chemical and bio weapons? Can I stay in the hut and throw things outside the hut?

If yes, sure.

Alternatively: is the t-rex provided food during this time?

If I can choose the food I'll eat 120 barrels of ammonium nitrate stored extremely closely together, 1 ton of tnt, percussion caps, enough wire to rig it all and a firing unit that leads into my indestructible bunker.

points at T-rex I chose hamburgers made from that T-Rex

Keep feeding the t-rex with my unlimited supply of food. It will overeat and get lazy.

I've seen it happen with birds. If they eat too much you can just walk over and pick them up.

lol, I think within the last week here on Lemmy there was a story from someone working at an animal rescue about a hawk that got too fat to fly. It had been nomming on some local free-range chickens and someone found the too-fat-to-fly hawk and called the rescue.

I'm also too fat to fly 🥲

You just have to buy two tickets. The armrest can fold up.

You're too fat to fly on earth. On a hypothetical planet with 10x the atmosphere you might be able to fly!

https://lemmy.world/post/53820124

Awesome, so glad you found it!

The dangers of all-you-can-eat buffets

The T rex must sleep at some point. Find a big artery close to the skin surface, sever it. Watch it bleed out to death.

Or just stay in the hut and enjoy one month of free food and rent.

I would be very surprised if a T-Rex had any major artery close enough to its skin to get pierced by a standard hunting knife. That would've been a major evolutionary flaw considering the other animals they were up against.

Find a big artery close to the skin surface, sever it.

Have you seen a headless chicken freaking out and running around before bleeding out and dying? Now imagine that, except the chicken is 12 m tall, weighs 8 metric tonnes, still has its head, and that head is full of teeth the size of a kitchen knife.

I implore anyone thinking of trying this to consider that the Tyrannosaurus rex measured up to 43 feet long, stood about 12 to 13 feet tall at the hip, and weighed roughly 4 to 9 metric tons. Its skull alone could weigh up to 600 pounds, and it had a bite force estimated at 35,000 to 57,000 newtons.

You would be better off with a TSA-approved blade against a Bengal tiger. There is no amount of strategic planning that can compensate for your being so incredibly outclassed that you’d have a better chance at building the first antigravity spaceship in your invincible hut within that same month.

Anyway, I would still probably try, for $500M.

I’ll try it for free after reading Cloaca Guy’s idea.

After comparing dinosaurs to feet and British money I still have no idea how big it is, but I believe you it's dangerous.

1 meter = 3 feet

(approximately)

Humans hunted wooly mammoths to extinction, and we'd do the same to T Rexes. 7 tons of mass is all well and good until a monkey who spent the last evening whittling a spear chucks it into your side from dozens of meters away.

You would never take it in a straight fight, but there's a very good reason why humans absolutely dominate every animal on earth - our intelligence. The original post is too light on details, but in basically every scenario there almost certainly is some possible way to win that could be figured out.

Punji sticks. Me use poop and sharpness. Give big lizard tiny microbe. Big infection. Me eat meat and watch it slowly die painful horrible death weak from no food or water.

That's a lot of digging to do while a T-Rex is prowling around.

there's a very good reason why humans absolutely dominate every animal on earth - our intelligence

Gonna have to slight disagree on this one. I've always found out ability to organize and communicate in generalist situations to be far more valuable than individual intelligence (though that's also nothing to shrug at compared to other animals).

Naw, part of me is wondering if you'd be more likely to succeed in a 1-on-1 with the knife or a 3-on-1 unarmed. I still can't think of a good strategy, but I feel like wed stand a better chance that just any one of us out there.

"organize and communicate in generalist situations"

So, intelligence? Humans didn't develop big brains for playing chess and doing theoretical physics, and most animal species that are considered "smart" are social (e.g. crows, most whales).

Eh, yes?

Feels like a different flavor of "intelligence" since one is problem solving focused ("how do a beat an unbearable for with minimal gear") while the other is waiting for "triggers" and having "responses" ready ("I'm at my spot and need to wait for guy #2 to run past to drop the anvil") and then not freezing if one of the triggers is slightly off.

So anyway, in general, both probably count as intelligence, but in this specific case, I think its worth differentiating one from the other. The best organizer/team player is not gonna stand out when working alone, while the most intelligent problem solver may not be able to work on a team.

Sure, but the thing is, humans dominate every known animal in both. The way primitive humans (probably) lived, they needed to be both competent at individual problem solving and group coordination.

But fair, it's quite telling that this "human vs. t-rex" problem isn't presented as a group effort, but as "one vs. one". Many modern humans have deluded themselves into thinking that the greatest people work alone.

You mean sacrifice 2 so one can escape right?

Lol, not the intention.

I'm thinking of trying to start some kind of rope making operation in the hut (VERY wild card assumption that the resources for this would be available). If you and your two buddies could make enough rope to hog tie the Rex, then successfully did the thing while it slept, maybe you could also build some level of choker for it to suffocate the beast?

Idk, but I know that'd be a lot of rope. Gotta get multiple people on the task.

the Tyrannosaurus rex measured up to 43 feet long, stood about 12 to 13 feet tall at the hip, and weighed roughly 4 to 9 metric tons. Its skull alone could weigh up to 600 pounds, and it had a bite force estimated at 35,000 to 57,000 newtons.

BUT!

our intelligence

I could take it in a fight.

Now imagine the animal is exhausted, injured, hasn't eaten for a month and is asleep, and you're in for a 500 million USD reward. IDK that I'd take the chance, but it seems possible if you're relatively fit and knowledgable about hunting.

Convo about what animals we could fight in a 1 v 1 fight came up, and a buddy chimed in with some solid piece of wisdom on the matter:

"If you think you're gonna lose, then you're gonna lose. Thinking you can win doesn't guarantee a win, but its impossible to win if you don't think you can."

I said a straight fight. Meaning just body fighting against body plus a short knife. There's tons of other ways to kill an animal. Poison collected from plants or other animals, starvation, dehydration, traps, pits, fashioning arrows, spears, causing infections, and on and on

why humans absolutely dominate every animal on earth - our intelligence.

We like to think that about ourselves, but in my opinion, that’s not the whole truth. After all, there are other intelligent life forms as well (though it’s certainly debatable whether they’re just as intelligent, “differently” intelligent, or simply less intelligent). The key reason why we, in combination with our intelligence, dominate the planet is, in my opinion, cooperation within social groups beyond the (extended) family. Religions, states, laws… all mental constructs we use to ensure that we can cooperate within massive groups. As far as I know, no one else does this.

In our scenario here, this crucial component is missing: While a human is (quite likely) more intelligent than the T-Rex, he is, after all, just one individual, and his true strength lies in the community. If we were to place 50 people together in this setting, I believe there would be significantly less doubt about the outcome.

I had similar thinking, but limited the group to 3 (some hopeleslly low number).

Most animals that are considered smart are social, too. Your definition of intelligence is too narrow.

Also our ability to run long distances. I have no idea on the speed of a T-Rex, but it may be possible to have it chase you long enough to wear it out.

Due to the mass of T Rex (4-6 tons) it would theoretically top out at 10-15mph, the same run speed of a trained marathon runner putting some effort in. An athlete could outrun a T Rex briefly, and the exertion would probably dissuade it from chasing for long.

T Rex predated upon slow, large herbivores. I think a hit & run tactic would eventually wear it down.

That works on things that run away. It could just eat you if it can beat you in a sprint.

Research suggests a T-Rex would need 50-100k kCal/day. Even if it ate a whole cow before starting, it would be hurting a week in.

Maybe it could survive the month, but would probably be severely malnourished at that point.

In any event, there is no mention of what happens if I fail to kill it. Does the experiment just end and I go home empty handed, or does the magic hut disappear and we fight it out to the death?

That's assuming it doesn't have the capability to go into torpor.

Can I keep the hut?

"Yes, Richard, you can keep the hut."

A hut, in this economy?

The only reason they can offer 500 million is because of the crypto sponsorship

All right, we'll keep the sponsorship. I'm fine living in the Cypto.com Arena('s Previously Magic Hut).

Only the knife.

Yeah that was my thought, just let it starve.

Seems like a reasonable assumption is that it gets 90-95% of its BMR per day; that is, its fed enough to stay alive for a long while, but it us on a duet and chronically hungry.

If you fail to kill it and survive, yeah seems like going home empty handed is the safe assumption.

no mention of the T Rex being provided food, so

I wait in my tent until it is practically dead of hunger or thirst, then I stab it

Yeah this seems easy. Chill out in your indestructible hut and eat some hot Cheetos for a month, wait for the T-Rex to starve to death. Come out a millionaire.

~~No mention of you being provided food either...~~ Nevermind I'm blind sometimes

Literally says "you will be provided food".

That could mean anything.

Whoops looks like I have the stupid ¯\(ツ)/¯

Whenever the trex is far from the hut, taunt it into charging me, then run to safety. Do this all day, everyday for a month. Let it exhaust itself. Consider dirtying the knife and planting it blade pointing up outside the hut door as a makeshift infectious caltrop. Either it dies of exhaustion or infection.

Consider dirtying the knife and planting it blade pointing up outside the hut door as a makeshift infectious caltrop

That's how I start out in Rimworld

Can a t rex live a month without food? If they can, then absolutely not.

Me, having a plan:

Then I slice it open from the inside.

Your torso is gonna be RICH!!!

perfect plan.

If at the end of the time, I was able to walk free without consequence, I would take the challenge, and spend time observing the behaviour of the beast. How fast does it move? How deeply does it sleep? Does it go torpid? Does it overheat?

I feel like there may be a way to do it. If not, well, i had a month of vacation.

Is all that is in the area: trex, you and the hut? No were else to hide... So it can see me from far away.

I hide in the hut stabbing at its nose, it moves far enough away, I taunt it back, rinse and repeat.

It dies of blood loss, or maybe infection.

The DnD door strats

fake: trex and humans did not coexist

gay: op is gay

I'd use the knife to cut branches and turn them into spears. Carve them really nice and pointy. I'd poop on the ground and smear the tips of my spears in my own feces. I'd find a way to sneak up on it while it is eating or sleeping or doing whatever. Throw my spears as hard as possible and as many of them as needed to make sure at least some of them hit the target. Then wait.

My biggest problem is that I am as atheltic as a potato, so I'd probably not be able to throw it far enough and hard enough to penetrate the skin. Depending, of course, on where thr heck I am positioned during the attack. If I am somehow able to be perched in a tree or on a tall rock before attacking, then maybe I am at an advantage. I could be supliment the spears with blow darts, also covered in poop, if I have the time to develop and use that tool properly. Ideally, I would like a bow an arrow, but I dont believe I'd have the skill and time to make a more advanced tool like a bow. One month isn't a very long time, after all.

Since T-rexes more than likely had feathers instead of the scaly skin we associate them with, there is a good chance, the spear/blow dart would be able to penetrate the skin - if my aim, strength and speed wasn't total shit.

I would also have to do all of this within the first week and attack it repeatedly to make sure it got infected beyond what its immune system could repair by itself. I have no idea how long it would take for a T-rex to die of sepsis, but the earlier it is hit, the better.

When you are smaller than your prey, you have to think of how smaller creature becomes a threat to bigger creatures. Poison is almost always the answer. The only poison we have ready avaiable, is our feces.

More than likely, I would totally fail in a real scenario and stay in my indestructable hut the entire time.

I was thinking a pungee pit, but yeah a month is no time at all for that kind of thing. You might be able to bait it into a spike wall if it's aggressive enough, but it might not be.

Spend the entire time digging a hole and building a cover. Then try to trick it into the hole where hopefully it gets stuck and starves

Just use the knife to sharpen sticks to put into the hole.

I'm reading thru, and I understand that this thing was as talk as 200 standard sized ice creme cones with mandibles that exerted a good 2975.66634234Newton inches per racoon squared. But did you say, 1 month free room and board plus food? I'll bring my own WiFi. Sure, let's do this. The hut is indestructible and has working plumbing?

I would just sit it out, theres nothing i can do about it. The one exception is if the food i get can be used to make weapons and stuff. I might kill it in a month if i can do that.

I mean, could a T-Rex eat a human due to it's size and mobility issues? You might be able to slowly stab it to death if it doesn't step on you.

The mobility issues seem to be greatly overstated

It might not be able to run, but it's still fast, and seemingly built like a handcart. Newer research suggests it could turn and lunge very quickly

That's really interesting! Can you send me an article about that?

I got curious so I briefly looked into it. Here's a fun article: https://usefulbs.com/scifi/blog/why-would-a-tyrannosaurus-rex-be-physically-unable-to-outrun-a-human-without-its-own-leg-bones-shattering

This looks like slop

You're right, but it's probably based on this: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/article/tyrannosaur-trex-running-speed

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4f-SPNk0IZU&ra=m

But What if T-Rex did not run? What if it just walked, but covered a lot of ground because of its long legs? The mechanical stress on the bones would have been much less severe if it didn’t get airborne while moving.

thank you for giving me permission not even to click that
