touchscreens are a completely insane UI for a spaceship where the bridge shakes like an ancient washing machine whenever things go slightly interesting. they're also a terrible UI when you have to act fast under stressful conditions.

give the crew actual tactile buttons/levers/whatever.

I’m not worried about him calling someone “an ass dial”.

I’m worried about him blasting someone to smithereens with phasers by sitting on the weapons panel.

A #2 Assblast.

I think the only way to do that (in an efficient way) is to have a camera record everyone using the touch screen and set up a predictive algorithm that can identify fingers from other appendages? But you would need to train it on ALL the fingers that federation species have

If it's a capacitive touch screen, as long as the pants fabric is thick enough he should be safe either way. Like trying to use your phone with old fashioned gloves on.

does Computer routinely identify fingers from other body parts?

„Captain, please stop trying to fire the laser with your penis.”

Forget all that. Who's the red head

Kellogg

The flagship of Starfleet doesn’t fire lasers, you P'takh

They’re phasers. Lasers are comically weak in the 24th century.

i have to imagine it's just the result of some geneva convention thing, because if nothing else the shields obviously let through some light and thus you could blind them with a big laser (like a pickup truck blasting their highbeams directly into your rear view mirror).

They’re kinda weak in this century too.

Data throwing mad side-eye.

I always liked Data's scenes involving his epiphanies on human behavior, perspectives, culture, etc.

They resonated deeply with ~10yr old me (yep, that old), as I spent my childhood trying to learn how to be more human-like and maybe earn their welcome at least, if not admiration. This was decades before autism was official (DSM-5, 2013), so I had no idea/thought everyone did that. 😅

Anyhow, I'm on Team Data/Geordi and don't care if Beverly fucked a ghost*. And, I miss Jean Luc. 😭

*FWIW, so did Ray Stantz, and no one batted an eyelash —they even put it in the main song! "Bustin' makes me feel good!" clip

(It's the only time that line occurs in the song. Every other time, it's a musical break or cut entirely.

Maybe he's doing what cats do: nonchalantly stamping his star onto the counter. Ya know, in a silent display of dominance, ofc. 😶
