I decided to wait until a few seasons were done after watching the premier. I sorta thought it fizzled out based on what I had heard about it. Season 2s can sometimes be the best a show has to offer, though, so who knows?
BEGINNING? God damn it
If you are doing limited run shows with short season with big names and big money AND you don’t film back to back then wtf are you doing.
They used to knock out 24 episodes a season and now these studios take 3 years to do 11 episodes. Then some new exec comes in and cancels the show after 2 seasons which took 4 years for some reason.
I like the shorter seasons. I like less filler. Just pick up the pace.
That's nice for you. I liked character building, personally, so I miss the 26 episode seasons.
the long hiatuses between shows, is what makes streaming kinda unattractive. like 2-3 years.
For most shows they only do the first season in case it's cancelled. But we're talking about the new show by the Breaking Bad guy... You know he wasn't going to get cancelled. There's no reason for it take this long.
His previous series was cancelled after 9 episodes…
What show was that?
Battle Creek
Interesting. I've never even heard of it lol
Exactly
AND you don’t film back to back
Can't understand why they don't do this. Surely that would make the whole thing cheaper.
Some do, like Slow Horses. And a lot of basic cable shows. Unions aren’t keen as it cheats their members out of seasonal pay bumps.
The other danger is when you then shoot two seasons without the benefit of audience reaction to guide the development of the second season, like the recent iterationof Doctor Who.
When someone makes a great work like this, I say let them do it on their terms. If season two sucks then your complaints were warranted. If not, they aren't imo.
Edit: also how are comparing sitcoms to shows like this which are clearly far higher budget and overall effort in general?
Back in the day, there were some big budget shows like LOST and Heroes which did have ~20 episode seasons with only a few months in between seasons. After the 2007 writers strike and the rise of streaming, that seemed to stop and we got the 8-10 episode seasons with multi year gaps in between.
Halfway through LOST, the show runners cut the episode count in half, because they didn't like all the filler they had to include in season 3.
Since Game Of Thrones did it's 10 episode seasons really. They pushed the budget up and the episode counts down and the industry went "Wait! What? You can do that?"
Supernatural had 23 episodes per season, and only had 3 month delay per season. Shows now have 10 episodes and take years to make is bullshit.
I watched like 20 minutes of Lost and that was more than enough. That show is known for being confusing and incomprehensible and imo thought it was being deep but wasn't. Heroes also seems much inferior in quality to a show like Pluribus.
So after the writers protested against horrible work conditions, they got better work conditions, is what you're saying. That's a bad thing how?
Lost and Heroes were not as big-budget as you think. Much of the money was spent on doing things quicker, as they only had 5-7 working days to shoot each episode. This meant simpler writing, simpler direction, simpler sets and very samey episodes. The cast and crew were simply fighting to get something in the can, regardless of quality.
The Lost pilot was the most expensive episode of TV ever, at the time IIRC.
That doesn't mean the whole show was expensive though. I guess wandering around forests in Hawaii isn't that costly.
Once they bought a scrap plane, built sets and exteriors, ongoing costs were not huge.
Never watched Heroes, but Lost had a pretty noname cast aside from the one hobbit and maybe the guy who played Linus. OK, also Michelle Rodriguez of course but she didn't last on the show a long time if I remember correctly? And Daniel Dae Kim had a bunch of roles before it but they were all side characters.
Most of the main cast that had to be there nearly every day of shooting consisted of folks who didn't have to put off other major roles to do it.
And it was a season a year, wdym only a few months between seasons?
What I meant about a few months between seasons was that because there were 20 weekly episodes, the show would be on for about half of the year, and then the hiatus between seasons was only a few months. For example, the Season 2 finale of LOST was on May 24, 2006 and the Season 3 premiere was on October 4, 2006.
They do this with Slow Horses. One stand alone season every year amd the last episode invludes preview scenes of the next season.
Slow Horses is bonkers, the first season premiered in 2022 and they are currently filming season 8 lol
I believe they film two at a time.
Human cost? Filming for 16 hour days 6 days a week impacts actors and crews lives.
Most long running TV shows cite this as the reason for losing stars - e.g. Mulder and Scully leaving the X Files.
Understandable. Which is why I like the 10 episode seasons. But if you telling me they can’t do 10 a year. Cmon
it would never work with sci-fi shows, they need more than 10. i think its the streaming service to string people along so they subscribe longer,+ to save money,.
Ok well Pluribus season 1 is 9 episodes so……
I guess people forgot how many shitty episodes were made in 20 episode seasons.
Good writing and filming takes time. If they rushed three quick seasons you guys would whine about the quality.
Show me one "streamee" show as rewatchable as any top ten 20 episode a season syndicated show.
Pick and top ten syndicated show and seelct eight to ten episodes a season that would leave it as well off and respected as it is currently.
Those duds were lost to the vibe.
You say this like episodes in 10 episode seasons never miss and there are plenty that have shit writing.
There are only six episodes in game of thrones final season
Dark ran three seasons 2017-2020 and was excellent. I think maybe what is happening is that shows are greenlit on an interesting premise and an unwritten ending.
also the long hiatus between seasons causes the same thing too, but somewhat worst, because actors, crews are not getting paid. its the executive being stingy with cost.
Just pick up the pace.
There's a reason why Michelin star restaurants are not drive thrus.
Three years between seasons pushes that metaphor into irrelevance. Actors are a decade older by season 3, it's depressing to watch.
Michelin chefs have franchises. If it was so great they would know the story and have it ready to make.
You complain here but won't not watch it... See the problem?
The irony is not lost
I'll have forgotten what happened and moved on by the time it actually comes out.
I rewatch most shows when I'm following along with releases ahead of each next season. This one and severance are the main ones I've got hyped right now
So what, a potential 2028 release? Hope I don't forget about the show by then.
I mean the show doesn't have a lot of effects and post production. I bet before the end of 2027
Took em long enough. I don't want to wait another year
On the one hand I'm glad they're writing quality stuff. And the show doesn't use many special effects, so surely that'll speed things along as well.
On the other.. Wait what show are we talking about again?
plurb
She Plurb on my I till I bus
I’m excited to see more!
I thought the first few episodes were fun. It's a cool sci-fi idea. But the ending of the season really sucked. I didn't like how they ::: spoiler spoiler didn't really finish properly and just went back to the original threat of "oh no, they're going absorb you". :::
So I couldn't care less about season 2.
I was really disappointed by it as well. The thing that really annoys me is when great scifi concepts and premises get wasted because they develop the show with lazy characters and plot, and that's entirely how I felt S1 go down.
It's not good writing for the main character to make a lot of bad choices. Writing a "flawed human being" only goes so far, before your character is acting so improbably idiotically they're just an avatar of the writer's need for plot conflict. That's pretty much what I felt slogging through S1.
Exactly my thoughts, I went back to find my reactions on the subject:
::: spoiler spoiler
-I have thoughts. Not sure how spoilery they are, but it's pretty universal to the first 3 episodes Carol, the main character, is either the most panicky or least curious person I've ever seen. She makes the worst decisions and asks no questions and it is so unsatisfying. Hard to put my finger on it, exactly.
-Pluribus Episode 4: Hats off to the reigning Can't Stop Making Dumb Fucking Decisions Champion of the World
-Took 7 Episodes, but the main character finally started being not completely fucking stupid. :::
Agreed
::: spoiler spoiler It felt like watching two seasons because the second lead character is introduced so late but the plot was just treading water the whole time.
I think the value of the show was the introspection of the characters and the trademark montage sequences. Weirdly though the show only has like 3 characters and I'm unsure how that will work long term. :::
apparently, you didn't get it.
Oook? Enlighten me. What did I not get?
Yay.
