This post inspired by my very recent discovery of the band Broken Focus, a hardcore/metal band that has a transfem lead vocalist. Who might just be my new gender goals.

https://youtu.be/zxKVYysUynk

Eris drew and octa octa they just released a wonderful acid, breakbeat album as alchemical sisters. It is a testament, a statement. Transfemmes on top of their game shaking up electronic dance music. Its just so ridicoulesely fun

Nameless mist (atmospheric black metal)

Victory over the sun (avant-garde/prog black metal)

Kyros (prog-rock/synthpop)

Fogweaver (dungeon synth)

Bull of Apis Bull of Bronze (black metal)

No such thing as too much black metal 🤌

Nirvana :^)

Against Me! remains GOATed

Honorable mention to Wendy Carlos the mother of electronic music. Seriously, she basically completely revolutionized music by helping develop the moog synthesizer then winning a grammy by releasing an album of Bach on it (in 1968), transitioned in 1968, publicly came out in 1979, and is still around today in her 80s. She also did the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange, the Shining, and Tron.

Kim Petras is also worth bringing up here, especially since this thread is really punk. I'm not much of a pop girlie, but her music is pretty dang good, and she's also won a Grammy, made all the more impressive by doing it while openly trans.

I believe Cheap Perfume has a trans member. They're also awesome

G.L.O.S.S.

Trans Day of Revenge was so healing to me when I was just a few years into transition. Music that told me I was allowed to be angry at how much I'd been forced to mourn…

She/Her/Hers, Destructo Disk, and Mischief Brew.

Is mischief brew trans?

I thought they were. I might be misremembering.

Um… Axis of Awesome?

(I don't even listen to them that much but I feel exposed for not having any bands with trans singers in my collection)

There's a bunch of trans punk bands here, Crop Tops and Heterophobes are probably my top two

Lena Raine is the first person in my mind, some people were very hard on her being C418's successor. But I believe she's actually great, haven't listen to her other works tho.

You should try Celeste :3

I listen to Astrid, FEM&M, and shteppi a lot

Jane Remover - https://youtube.com/@jane_remover

Probably still Wendy Carlos. The Clockwork Orange soundtrack is tight, and was pioneering.

Recently got into Lex Walton. She’s pretty obscure, you’ve probably never heard of her lol!

I don't listen to that many transfem artists, though my favourite artist, Jamie Paige, is one of the few. I can also recommend shteppi.

Also a notable mention for a small non-trans artist: hiSwaps!

Transgession

Extreme Transgression

They're black metal.

Laura Jane Grace is my favorite artist I love Against Me! And her solo works. Saw her concerts a few times shes really good

She's so fucking good in concert. My ex took me years ago and it was great. I should look to see if she'll be somewhere near me at some point, I'd love to take my wife to one of her shows

Wait, apparently she's been releasing new music under her name‽ I'd just been looking for AM!. And it's folk punk! Ooh, I'm gonna have some fun with that

Definitely the artist I've most consistently loved. Been listening to her for like 12-13 years now. At first, at least one song confused me because it seemed like she was gendering herself as female, but she was stilling going by her deadname back then. In hindsight, it was obvious she had already tried to come out through songs before TDB released, but I hadn't paid much attention to the lyrics in the most explicit songs.

Lena Raine!

I was afraid no one would mention her.

Hell yeah, minecraft soundtrack lady

Celeste and guild wars 2 were my first exposure to her and I've been in love ever since! The tracks she's done for Minecraft have been gorgeous though

Against Me!

I had no idea! I’m only familiar with Teenage Anarchist and Thrash Unreal, which apparently came out before she came out. That’s awesome.

Don’t feel bad, I had no idea until seeing her in concert in 2014! It was a ā€œHoly fuck, fuck yeah dude!ā€ experience.

Yeah, her coming out was pretty big. Including her ex wife having to tell Rolling Stone that Laura's gender had nothing to do with the divorce. She later titled her (pretty good) autobiography a transphobic slur.

Transgender Dysphoria Blues was an amazing album as well, that really hits hard especially early in transition. And it's wild in retrospect that she put out The Ocean (song) before coming out. But in retrospect she's got a handful of songs from that era that are clearly dealing with her relationship with her gender.

Laura Jane Grace is a beautiful person. I love her music, both before and after she transitioned.

Favorite songs:

  • Delicate, Petite & Other Things I'll Never Be
  • We Laugh at Danger (and Break All the Rules)
  • 333
  • Fuckmylife666

Laura Jane Grace is a legend for her history in the punk community.

Edit - fav songs:
You look like I need a drink
I’m an anarchist
How Low

Idk how I've never heard of this one before but it's giving early-2000's blink 182/the killers, 9/10 very solid!

She's awesome but aside from being a legend of modern punk she mostly got super well known for coming out as trans in like 2014ish

Transgender dysphoria blues is my favorite song.

Reinventing Axl Rose šŸŽ§

Sophie is incredible. She made one of my favorite albums of all time, Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides. Highly recommend for fans of experimental pop and club music.

Sophie was amazing, and that album is incredible! I love her sound.

She also produced a song by Let’s Eat Grandma called Hot Pink that’s pretty great.

My daughter's classmate once gave her a list of musicians she liked and it was pretty much just a list of transfem Canadians. Neither of them are trans and I'm not out, so it was entirely coincidental.

Underscores (I like their album U), then femtanyl

Kinda obsessed with their newest All The Time rn, but I like a bunch of her earlier stuff too

Came here looking for this, I LOVE underscores. Lena Raine is super cool too! Though different... At the same time I feel isolated in liking the Celeste OST much more than the Minecraft one.

you're the second person to say that in this thread... do people really think of Lena Raine as "THE minecraft composer" these days? in my mind that role has always belonged to C418

I hope not... C418 is absolutely the Minecraft composer in my head. But a lot of people when they hear Lena Raine don't think Celeste, they think Minecraft. I do know people who always mention Lena Raine when talking about who composed Minecraft now... Which having played it again more recently I guess is somewhat fair because a surprising amount of the current soundtrack is hers.

But the best parts are C418 on that one IMO.

okay whew, i'm not losing it. C418's music is what makes minecraft what it is, imo

you are not alone in associating Lena Raine mainly with Celeste, that is a fantastic soundtrack. although now that i've bought and listened to her entire discography a few times, i gotta say: the Chicory: A Colorful Tale soundtrack is growing on me

edit: weirdly enough, when i think of "celeste music" i actually think of catapillie, Maddie Sexton, BeanJammin or one of the other many composers on the massive soundtrack for the Strawberry Jam mod

I swear, you're about to get me on nodded Celeste... ;-;

I need to listen to more Lena for sure. Haven't heard that one.

Oh no Celeste is peak yeah

My favourites are resurrections and reach for the summit

TOTALLY great choices. I don't think I can choose personally... WAAAAAAY too many bangers in that OST. I listen to the whole thing in the car sometimes on longer drives. <3

I really like Wallsocket.

same, U is good too but the highlights on wallsocket are phenomenal.

That underscores is like a good "driving somewhere late at night" type album. Very solid, 8/10.

LGBTQ-friendly: Ross Federman (from Tally Hall)

Of course I listen to femtanyl as well and other artists I might not even know are trans, lol.

Cheap Dirty Horse

A UK punk band

Highlights include "On the rob" and "I transed your dad"

Glad to see Cheap Dirty Horse mentioned in the wild. On the Rob is a great song!

I play them to my daughters, they loved them too

I'm a fan of Owlbear. They're a power metal band with a transfem vocalist, and she also has a black metal solo act. I've been to a couple of shows with Owlbear in the lineup and they're even better live.

Cab Ride Home, another metal band with a trans vocalist, had a pretty good album and a couple of EPs, but went on hiatus since she's now a senator in Virginia.

went on hiatus since she's now a senator in Virginia

Hell of a story arc there, wow!

Listening to owlbear right now, it's pretty solid. Giving me some Blind Guardian/Killswitch Engage Holy Diver type vibes. Very nice, 8.5/10

For transmasc: Dylan and the moon! He has a few songs that he rerecorded after his transition and mixed together to create a duet with himself! https://youtu.be/ojSmc7s1rgU

I saw Sarah and the Safe Word at a Bear Ghost concert and they were pretty fun, the lead singer is transfem and pretty sure all the other members identify as queer

All the other members except drums. (they made a joke about this when I saw them)

Ok this is giving "aurelio voltaire but like if he was a girl"

Solid pick, 8.5/10. If I was drunk or stoned, 9/10.

Not my personal favorite but my wife really likes Rainbow Kitten Surprise. The lead singer came out as trans a few years back.

from Boone, North Carolina

Automatic 10/10, lol

Boy Clothes is a great emo-ish band from Nashville. The bass player is fantastic and I wish I could remember the stage name she uses for her solo stuff. I'll add it if my brain decides to work.

Obligatory StomachBook, Femtanyl, and Changeline.

You had me at emo music lol. Solid 8/10 pick, if I was sad and/or high while listening then possibly even a 10/10.

I’ll just leave this here cause it’s hilarious and very good.

FOXCULT FOXCULT FOXCULT!!!

Ok this is some good shit here.

Giving serious Rise Against/Trivium vibes

I love Xiu Xiu. https://youtu.be/IClPnI207VA

I love The Bedroom Witch. If Synthpop Darkwave is your thing I recommend you check it out.

It's giving me "song that plays during a breakup in an 80's movie" and like, that's not bad, but it's not something I normally seek out & listen to. 6/10.

Idk if she is my favorite but damn i love jasmin.4.t, she just has this very chill and nice vibe to it and a beautiful beautiful voice! Plus she definetly deserves more love aswell!

And also sometimes goes hard - the outro to Elephant (especially live) and Did U No both blew me away. Had a good chat with her after a show about guitar tone, she highlighted Sunn O))) as an influence which is decidedly not chill haha

This is definitely a "got to be in the mood for it" kinda sound, but I like it! Having a hard time trying to think of what it reminds me of. 8/10, solid pick.

Musithical are transfem+plural, discovered them recently and am now a huge fan. be warned, their lyrics are mostly not particularly subtle and can get rather dark

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoRKMbCEnvs (good starting point)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSJUajd_A7o (my personal favorite)

something which occurred to me while writing the above comment: what's an appropriate word for a plural system which makes music? "band" feels wrong (to me that word implies multiple instrumental/vocal tracks being performed all at once), but "artist" seems even worse (imo it carries a very strong singular connotation).

pinging @oftheair@lemmy.blahaj.zone

Whatever the plural group prefers. After all, some may not be good at music at all.

So they should be asked.

It is very amusing to us to consider a plural group calling themselves "the (something) band" though, instead of system etc.

A project?

Ezra Furman is my all-time fave! Her music is so beautiful and full of vivid, idiosyncratic imagery. If you havent heard of her elsewhere she did the soundtrack for Sex Education.

Not trans, but I'm a big fan of KFlay. For specifically trans I probably have to go with Steam Powered Giraffe, although she unfortunately left the band recently (amicably). Both are fantastic live

Yeah I like that new K Flay song ants and of course Blood in the Cut is a classic

Outcast stomp by G.L.O.S.S. is a favorite of mine
