We live in a universe that is full of invisible places where if you fall in you cannot escape and time dilation means that you'll witness the entire rest of the universe's lifespan as you get yanked into an infinitely thin strand of spaghetti, and that feels spookier than a dude with an octopus for a face that makes you go crazy if you look at him or a guy who wears glasses over a bedsheet and stabs you.

Deep sea horror though. The fact that we don't know what happens on our own planet makes it even scarier.

Just realizing that I haven't really read deep sea horror. Maybe books hinting at deep sea horror. Or games.

Subnautica is the scariest game I've played so yea this tracks

Same

Looks like we have the founding subscribers to c/thalassophobia

Liu Cixin, all his problems writing likeable characters and particularly human women aside, does good space horror if you have a certain degree of science knowledge. If you don't, a lot of the creepy aspects go over your head. And if you have too much knowledge, you probably see the holes in the logic and his own understanding and it looks ridiculous instead. But I am in the "understand just enough" group so i had weird dreams after finishing Death's End

Nothing?

Also scary!

Control Resonant explores big holes with math in them quite a bit. highly recommended

Literally Sunless Skies.

Not really. All the spooky stuff there is just bees, tentacles, or the sun but evil.

They kinda took all the fun out of the setting imo. Insofar as it does get weird it gets English degree weird not maths degree weird.

the sun but evil.

oh hey I really liked that scp

it's not generally a math hole kind of setting, but it does have some nice big rocks and stuff on fire

Yeah but its less "Math broke down so its on hyper-fire" than "What if a law hated you specifically and could shoot lasers"

i haven't played skies specifically but fallen london does have a couple good "sorry math machine broke, try again next tuesday" storylines

Those exist primarily as a way to do grinding. The "horror" isn't the scale or the numbers or the math in unless skies.

The "scary" thing about the sapphir'd king isnt the scale, the immensity or the sheer unfathomable nature of a star as a physical object. It's that he's god and he's a dick. The fact that something is as huge as a star and that this immensity breaks down reality as we know it doesn't really come into it, he's a god, he's a dick, all religions are a lie to slightly improve his dinner.

The closest they get to toying with actual cosmic horror is the spider senate

spider senate

Gotta check this game out

The point of the spider senate is to ask the question "What if too many spiders". And you're thinking. "Oh man. A bunch of spiders" no. More spiders.

No. More.

::: spoiler spoiler You're thinking something like "What if a planet of spiders right now, aren't you? Well. More. spiders. :::

i interpreted the "math" and "math hole" bits as "physics/causality are wrong here," not like large scale or numbers, so i was thinking of stuff like the Apocrypha or that time Hell disappeared for a month

but now that i write it out like that i'm realizing that the Neath is quite literally a big hole where math goes weird

Solaris

Also fire, but not like you know it (in the sun)
