Volkswagen Will Remotely Limit Some ID.4s to 80 Percent Charge

Volkswagen is planning to send out an over-the-air update to 22,524 ID.4 customers that would limit the maximum charge of their vehicle to 80 percent, recall documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show. According to the documents, the batteries in the associated vehicles could catch fire if certain charging conditions are met while the vehicle is at over 80 percent state of charge.
This isn’t the first recall related to battery fires that Volkswagen has issued for the ID.4 this year. That came back in January and covered nearly 44,000 models stretching from the 2023 to 2025 model years.
I sure do love giving companies the power to remotely access and disable parts of my car in OTA updates because they haven't done enough testing to prove their product will not kill me in certain conditions.
I cannot see how this could be misused in any way.
Please read the article. This is a safety measure as part of a recall to stop potential fires. This is a good thing, not a conspiracy
I agree with the reason for the move, but the owners should be compensated. They bought the car with the advertised range, not with 80% of it.
Ford F150 gas tanks are falling out, which will affect range.
This conversation is about Volkswagens.
I don't doubt it's a safety considersation.
In a less tinfoiler note - why would they release a car that's not been tested well enough to discover this fault condition?
Is it not already well known that these batteries contain enough energy to be a practically inextinguishable firebomb?
Why would any company, let alone one as big as VAG release a vehicle without going through every test to prove that their vehicles were safe?
German industry went from CAD to customer around 2010 and never looked back. It's one reason why no one is buying any VAG products. The VAG has dried up. AUDIs now all have plastic oil pans.
After this and the emissions scandal, I'm not sure we should trust VW.
Just keep in mind every diesel maker was found guilty of altering emissions testing.

And their active support of an apartheid state committing genocide
Doesn't that mean then that it has 20% less range as a minimum to what you agreed to when bought it? Sounds like another law suit is on the way. One thing for a car to age but to intentionally reduce it hmm
Depends if its permanent or not and how long.
I’m sure they will remotely send people refunds as well.

Man, seems like VW just can't catch a break with the ID.4. I'm glad I decided against it when I was shopping for an EV last year.
The dash and steering wheel controls kept me away. Also the fact that I’m broke.
I just got a buzz 😬. Hopefully not going to have the same problems...
How do you find the visibility in it?
Excellent
It’s probably under the passenger seat.
Fingers crossed this helps push more money into salt batteries
Volvo EX30 same issue. Are they the same battery components?

Volvo batteries are made by Geely. ID4 batteries are made by LG.
I would avoid any battery pack not made by CATL.
