80s transfem joke rule

Oh my fucking god 😭
They had a shockingly respectful interview with Wendy Carlos right after she came out. They were generally a very socially liberal publication that used porn to fund the writing and the platforming of more controversial and radical topics. My mom was a subscriber despite not being attracted to women.
Getting bottom surgery in under a year? Good for her!
Yeah 😔
The company and its founder are problematic, but not only have they had good journalism, Playboy has always skewed towards progressive socials issues from what I've seen. Their first trans centerfold (that they/we know of) was in 1991.
The first trans woman in playboy was in September 1991. The first trans centerfold was not until November 2017.
Oh shit I didn't know they'd had a trans centerfold, I knew they were progressive, but I didn't know the progressiveness ever extended into the porn part
What exactly is a centerfold?
Like the other person pointed out, what it is is literally in the name.
The big folded up poster in the center of the magazine, practically the "main attraction" of the whole thing
This is why gender affirming care needs to be fully covered by the universal healthcare system.
That's not the joke. The joke is getting paid less for being a woman
For any eggs out there, they do remove your testicles (bless), but the rest of it is much more like a magical girl transformation than a removal. All the blood vessels and nerves and skin gets preserved and it gets shuffled around into the positions your brain expects them to be in.
Yeah, but it still really hurts when they sever your "excess" wages
into the positions your brain expects them to be in
This part is not exactly true. The different tissues are not mapped one-to-one to their homologues, simply because the geometry and proportions are quite different.
The only innacurate part is that it was "months" later, not years.
This was back in the days when a "common" way to transition was to travel to Thailand and do several major surgeries.
Which seems to stem from the idea that you transition only via surgery, not HRT. IDK if they even had HRT in the 80s, though.
They had HRT in the Weimar Republic, though the order of things was weird then.
They had it in the 1960s for sure. Candy Darling got it, for example.
Lmao that was a good one
How I wish the average person would realise that they can still make jokes about trans people as you can about any group of people, just make jokes (like this) where it's laughing with us, not at us. Where there's no maliciousness and we're all involved and laughing rather than being the butt of it.
Maybe someday we'll properly get to that point. Thanks for the giggle :3
The trans experience inherently has so many absurd, objectively funny aspects about it. We're really missing out on some really good comedy because of transphobia
Ooo got any for the crowd?
Yeah unfortunately 😭 just gotta stock up on the jokes for the real ones - or until the topic climate hopefully eases up in the future. Have a good library of gold at the ready!
Despite the understandable scorn Playboy and Hefner have earned, there was a period of time where there were really interesting articles and good journalism being published next to the tits
That was sort of the beauty of being independent and uncouth. They didn't have to worry about offending major brands/sponsorships because they weren't beholden to typical ad agencies to begin with.
Unlike Rupert Murdoch's The S*n.
Saturday Light Nive?
That's one of the two names adopted by the people of Liverpool after The S*n's repeated, outrageous lies about the victims of the Hillsborough disaster. The other is The Scum. I think the paper is essentially unavailable if you live in the city. Nobody will stock it.
They're famous for their Page 3 girls. They'd put naked women just inside the cover of their newspapers. They also ran campaigns counting down to the 16th birthdays of Charlotte Church and Emma Watson. The thing they seem to have forgotten is that it would still not be legal for the readers to sleep with these children, as neither is going to shag a 67 year old S*n reader consensually.
That countdown thing is vile, gods below.
Magazine in the UK which would post topless 16 year olds until it was made illegal.
Newspaper*
Is it though?
Fair point
Thanks for the censor, it still jumpscared me but it was easier to recover ❤️
Unfortunately, there're a lot more UK rags owned by Murdoch than just that one :( and many others owned by other rightwing billionaires. It's insane we have got to this point where our majority sources of our local news is mostly all foreign billionaire + politically captured
The comics were great too
They have always been those who woke among us, for those who choose to see them
The joke rubric is alleged by my mother to have been exceptional and funny and a great reason to buy playboy back then.
It wasn't just a porn magazine.
It was the "classy" porn magazine, if there can be such a thing. Good articles and jokes.
Yeah, the joke back in the day was that guys would say they "read Playboy for the articles" as a cover story so they didn't have to say they were looking at porn. But at the same time, they did have really good articles. Funny, thought provoking, and surprisingly progressive.
They were also one of the first print magazines to embrace the internet. I remember them posting a really cool Hellboy motion comic on their website back in the 90s.
My favorite iteration of this joke is in the movie Smeakers, where Whistler, a blind character, is reading a braille edition of Playboy.
I guess they made the same joke in men in tights.
Blinkin reading a Braille edition of Playboy on the toilet?
in my comment thread, you are answering to a different comment. The braille comment is further down than yours.
looking at .org while not logged in it looks correct. might be an issue with your client.
One of my favorite movies and it kills me how much less people seem to care about the blind than ever.
I’m been saying for years that it’s not okay that US currency isn’t accessible to the blind.
It would be so simple too. A little notch with a sheet of the same plastic they use in Canadian currency that is moved up or down the bill based on the denomination would be enough.
Most people wouldn't even notice it.
That one seems like a bad option. It'd be fine if you have a copy of every bill, but if you're handed like a 50, how are you supposed to know it's a 50 and not a 100 or a 20?
It's better than nothing, but if we're going to do it I'm betting there's a better way.
I imagine experience. I bet if something like that were released, then people with visual impairments would be one of the first peoples in line to learn the difference so they would be able to quickly tell by texture exactly what denomination they're holding.
And also, a lot of the world is on digital, so I'm sure most visually-impaired people would just swipe a card.
Hear hear! I have just noticed since I was a kid in the 80s the slow creep of just... not doing braille anymore in public spaces. Used to seem pretty common, now it seems rare.
I fucking love that movie.
They had also great and deep articles from what I gather
I met the guy who invented the Reebok pumps technology, and successfully sued Reebok for stealing his invention. He also invented the football flack jacket. The November 1980 Playboy had the most in-depth article that also focused on the person behind the inventions.
And incredibly popular writers would publish short stories and think-pieces in there. Playboy was genuinely quality content. The writing was arguably a higher bar than the photography.
Those were writers like Hunter Thompson, Norman Mailer, and Kurt Vonnegut. ‘Popular’ is an understatement for guys like that.
Also Isaac Asimov if I'm not mistaken.
Play the system, be unemployed
