i mean, tbf, converting to islam is pretty much just....sincerely saying the shahada. practicing islam is a Whole Thing but I could see him walking into a mosque, saying "hey this is p cool and ive been reading up on it for a while" and then being convinced to say the shahada. source: this but also i basically did exactly that some 15 years ago, it just didnt really stick lol

One of my personal trueanon style rules is you can't trust anyone who converts to a monotheism as an adult
Most lifelong catholics I know are just run of the mill racist right wingers.
there are two totally distinct groups of catholics in the US: woke urban liberation theologists who like the pope and suburban pseudo-protestant millennarian fascists who hate the pope
probably tried to talk about hundreds of times, but they kept deflecting with banana budding this and banana pudding that, trying to avoid seeing what was coming.
one can only hear about the right technique for sprinkling nutmeg so many times before you have to follow your soul's calling.
To-do list:
-
Groceries (milk / eggs / banana pudding / salad mix)
-
Refuel car
-
stop by a mosque and convert (Islam)
-
dog food (sensitive stomach)
If the guy converted to Islam suddenly without consulting people close to him then I can't imagine he's that serious about it. I give him three months. Guys do this sometimes, they suddenly decide they're a different, cooler guy now and they make a big debut as Guy 2.0. But normally it's more like they suddenly buy a Miata or start wearing a leather jacket.
Is there a name for this phenomenon? When dudes very suddenly become very surface level devoted to something they never showed interest in before and try to be the most 100% of that thing. Like I've known guys who suddenly decided they were really into the Roman Empire, and one guy who out of nowhere became a dragon otherkin and every conversation with him for six months was about the politics of dragon councils and which people he suspected of secretly being wyverns.
Fair, but it sais in the post, that he's been talking about it for years.
Yeah but from the partner's understanding, it was an interest in the religion as like an academic subject, not a personal religious belief. I don't know the full story here but it seems like there was either a failure in communication, or her partner was being dishonest with her. Either way, she didn't understand her partner wanted to be a Muslim until the moment it happened, which would be very odd and upsetting.
Midlife crisis. Thor guy is a little young for it, but the partner is 36. It’s right about then that people start to seek more out of life than the hamster wheel. It does involve a lot of sports cars and wardrobe overhauls, but religion/spirituality can enter the mix.
At least they have enough sense of taste to go for a Miata instead of something heinous like a mustang or a giant ass pavement princess. IM JUST SAYIN.
ADHD. Stuff just happens sometimes
yeah, if I skip my meds for too long i accidentally start to pray salah
one guy who out of nowhere became a dragon otherkin and every conversation with him for six months was about the politics of dragon councils and which people he suspected of secretly being wyverns
is he single?
no he ended up converting to zen Buddhism, then he was a crust punk anarchist for a while backpacking in Japan, then he married a jehova's witness
Also he's a Jesuit Catholic now
living the free life, unencumbered by all social expectations or use of brain
A Being so Unbearably Light he's floating off into god damn space
one guy who out of nowhere became a dragon otherkin and every conversation with him for six months was about the politics of dragon councils and which people he suspected of secretly being wyverns.
this dude sounds like he completely bought into being a dragon otherkin so the fact you labled it 'surface level' is very funny to me I'm just imagining him yapping at you for like 45 minutes about some dragon council meeting like and you sitting there thinking "yeah sure, ok you fucking larper"
Calling him the dragon equivalent of a revisionist liberal
Also this is gonna sound completely fake but he dropped the dragon stuff after he got arrested because he brought a sword into a Starbucks and tried claiming religious discrimination because the sword contained the souls of his various dragon ancestors.
No actually that makes complete sense to me, if my scales aren't even a shield against things like "brandishing weaponry" charges - what use are they?? I'd also just cast True Polymorph (any knowledgeable dragon should have access to this 9th level spell) and become a full human...
Surely there would be a number of different motivations and it can be difficult to tell when an interest in something is genuinely "surface-level" unless you have that interest yourself, so I don't know if I'd label this as a single broad phenomenon. I also don't know whether I'd label "suddenly getting into something new" as a guy thing as opposed to just something that I guess stands out more when guys do it. Heck, who knows if it's even something they "never showed interest in before" versus just something you never noticed them taking interest in before, or they just didn't tell you in particular, or they did tell you and you just forgot? I'm thinking about all the times when people are like "you never showed signs of being trans", but actually you showed plenty, it's just that the possibility of being trans is so far outside of the cis brain that even the eggiest of behavior goes right over their heads. It can be the same for interests/hobbies, especially if people are worried about being judged as cringe for it.
Not to ascribe motivations to people I don't know, but if I heard about somebody in my life suddenly converting from atheism to Islam without consulting anybody in their life about it first, then I'd have to wonder if the person was experiencing psychosis. This isn't to say that people can't genuinely convert from atheism to a religion, but when that conversion is particularly sudden and accompanied by erratic and irresponsible behavior such as converting without telling your partner of ten years, then the total change of worldview to start believing in supernatural forces becomes a bit concerning. For people who take a sudden interest in the Roman Empire, my first thought would be that it's a cryptofascist red flag, that the interest is surface-level because it's more of an aesthetic-based dogwhistle than anything, and actual scholarly knowledge of the Roman Empire would be counterproductive to the fascist worldview. Which isn't to say that it's impossible to take an interest in the Roman Empire in a non-fashy way, just that I'd approach with much caution. As for otherkin, then that's a subculture that skews very autistic, and I would know a thing or two about letting my life suddenly get consumed by a new autistic interest.
All of this based on people I've known who converted to Islam, got into the Roman Empire, or were otherkin, although a few anecdotal experiences aren't enough to speak for people as a whole. As I'm saying, there are many different motivations behind why people might suddenly change so much, so we should try to be less judgmental on the whole. Even in the cases where it genuinely is just somebody deciding to become a Different Cooler Guy for the sake of being a Different Cooler Guy, then should we really be judging people for finding ways to experiment with their identity? Maybe you'll feel some second-hand embarrassment from seeing somebody's seventieth Guy 2.0 debut, but the state of being alive in general is a phase, so why should we devalue the sub-phases that life contains? The problem with suddenly deciding to wear a leather jacket is the leather part, not the change in wardrobe. To be cringe is to be free!
I dunno.

Oh I've done it before and yeha I was being glib. I'm cringe too and have also gone through phases. My anecdotal experience though is that I kinda had myself figured out at 13, when I thought my gender and sexuality were different than everyone else and also I really like hardcore punk music/fashion, and that I wanna be vegan.
Then I spent a long time trying to stop being those things because I thought they were just cringe things from my youth that I needed to grow past. So I adopted a bunch of fake surface identities and tried to compensate for their fakeness by overdoing it. Now I'm well into middle age and I'm very confidently a nonbinary asexual vegan who dresses in chains and black eyeliner and I've never been more chill with myself. My original read on myself at 13 was correct and the actual immature thing I was doing was trying to be someone else.
I know that's not everyone's experience, but that's been the experience of a lot of people I've known who go through the cycles of adopting personas suddenly. I guess what I'm not judging is changing interests, or having a niche identity, or even when it's done by guys. But I do kinda get wary of people who very suddenly shift themselves in a way they think will be interesting, when really they're just adopting a persona for the sake of it. I've also known people who converted to religions out of nowhere and then didn't actually do stuff like read the Torah/Bible/Quran but would try to speak authoritatively on religious matters as if they were an insider. I don't like that kinda thing, when people try to confidently claim something that's actually very superficial and they just started last week.
Stuff like coming out as trans though I'd consider different, because that's still often not a safe thing to do. Like I came out as asexual to family and even that didn't go well, even though being asexual doesn't have nearly the same level of persecution or threat as other identities. So something like that is usually gonna have to be sudden because you gotta find a safe moment, safe person to come out to.
Very good comment, thank you. I figured there was some context I was missing. I have to wonder if people might be referring to different things when they talk about having figured themselves out, because either my own case is very similar to yours ("hmm I sure spend a lot of time thinking about being a girl and kissing boys… oh well, I'm sure that's not significant! just teenage hormones or something! let's not give into those fantasies under any circumstances!" ) or it's completely dissimilar, because I wouldn't say I have myself figured out even now that I'm in my mid-20s.

Sounds like the way people with ADD tend to pick things up, get really into them for a short period of time and then put them down. Or kids when they are searching for their “thing”, maybe the guys you know are just big kids who still never found their thing. Or maybe its just more noticeable than the people who pick up something new, get really into it, and do stick with it forever, which is also something that happens. I know guys who got super into grilling or woodworking or whatever and are still at it after many years.

I try to give people some grace when they suddenly get into a hobby really hard, because how else are you gonna find out if you like something and have a long term hobby if you never try it yourself first? It also helps that most people I'm friends with are some flavor of AuDHD, so a lot of conversations start with "so what are you hyperfixating on rn?"

I don't think it's necessarily a guy thing, I think everyone has
or start wearing a leather jacket.
Don't call me out like this.
People should be more encouraged to experiment with style and hobbies in my opinion. Idk about like really big decisions like religion or a car, but for small stuff, why not? I'm in my 30s and still trying new stuff (kinda related to being genderqueer but still, I feel it should be normal)
midlife crises used to be way more boring than that and i don't know if this is an improvement
Oh yeah I guess that is what it's called. What's it mean if you know people who've been continuously debuting their new Guy since they were children?
Bowie
Maybe a continual identity crisis?
zeno's identity paradoxx
Mid life crisis?
Sure sure we can sign those conversion papers for you... but have you asked your wife for her permission?
this is what happens when the white boys start saying mashallah fr fr
I feel like I have been seeing among white dudes more of the sentiment "our Christian leaders are evil pedos and support Israel, maybe Islam has a point? " The chuds also see it as more "traditional" regarding gender roles than liberal western society, I've seen manosphere types posting about Islam and the wife's in the home place etc.
I've seen manosphere types posting about Islam and the wife's in the home place etc.
Which is wild, because I was just reading, the other day, about the exceptionally high rates of divorce in medieval Egypt. The Islamic golden age was way too woke for these dipshits
I mean I'm not gonna pretend Iran and Ansar Allah haven't had me searching "Shia mosques in my neighborhood"
It turns out that what I really want in a religion is shooting down F35s and bombing Tel Aviv
I don't see why something like this is so devastating unless this person is an islamophobe and/or an overly obnoxious atheist.
I'd absolutely break up with someone who converted to any of the abrahamic religions in adulthood. There's a reason the holy texts of those religions are used to justify some of the worst things humanity is capable of, and it's because the god of the abrahamic religions is depicted as explicitly approving of most of them. I'm not out on the streets haranguing anyone but I am also not okay with being in a relationship with someone who decides, as an adult, that that entity is worthy of worship.
Maybe I'm an overly obnoxious atheist but I would definitely be wary if someone I was close to converted to Christianity. Adult converts to Christianity have been some of the most reactionary people I've ever known - misogynist, LGBTphobic, dominionist, the works.
I suppose that's fair. Idk, perhaps I'm just naive or too trusting. Or at least the vote scores around these comments say that my opinion is far and away not the popular opinion on the matter. Like, I don't see a reason to immediately concern myself with such things. When someone's thoughts and opinions start shifting, then I'd start taking action, but until then, I don't really care what religion my wife practices (which is none, and probably will be none forever).
i mean if my partner of 10 years were both irreligious i would feel pretty weirded out that he would a make a big life decision like this without any indication
though i doubt this lady would have such a big reaction if this guy became a Episcopalian or something
Oh yeah, it would be strange for sure. I know if my wife suddenly picked up any religion I would be dubious at first, but not care afterwards. This individual in the post provided seems to have lost their damned mind over it though.
If my partner did something that indicated a deep, fundamental shift in their worldview and I had no idea it had happened, that would indicate that they had chosen to withhold this change from me and I would be hurt. It’s completely understandable.
That said, this shit is fake
That’d be a no from me. I’m not being with a misogynist who believes in sky daddy. And yes, all of those religions count.
Call me an overly obnoxious atheist. I don’t care. We aren’t fucking.
I for one support your crusade against reactionary ideologies.
this sub and the boydinner one are so fucking irritating to me lol and I only see them when I happen to accidentally go to the front page of reddit (which happens often since Googling "x reddit" is still the best way to find answers for anything modern)
The post format on these subs are so tuned to reddit karma farming meta that it feels like they were made solely for that purpose. The vague mildly ominous post title to clickbait people in, the classic rant text post about someone/something in the person's life that made AITA so popular, and my last favorite new meta the random picture attached to a text post because the reddit redesign favors images over text.
They are very very obvious attempts to keep the culture war alive IMO. They were trying it with a new black twitter sub a few months ago but then half the comments were about capitalism and suddenly that sub stopped making the front page.
I never saw the boydinner posts until more recently, they had to push that also because half the girldinner posts I would see would be like "is this man I'm dating psychologically torturing me?" Or something worse. The boydinner shit is pathetic because what I've seen seems like it's on the level of "my girlfriend got mad I played video games during her birthday party "
You think so? The average boydinner I've seen has been like "I've spent 19 years continuously drunk and reality is setting in now that I'm losing the house". Well, either that or "she's cheating."
So you’re totally down for the culture war bullshit. Just gotta have it.
I'm not sure what you mean, it's just funny reddit pushes them both, and the comparison of what the popular issues are for people/bots who post there is interesting to me. I'm agreeing with you that it seems artificial, to push the culture war angle.
They are very very obvious attempts to keep the culture war alive IMO
EXACTLY. I mean, truly what /r/popular subreddit isn't (the sipstea one, fauxmoi, etc etc) but still...
hope both are ok becausue ending a relationship that long is hard
