Salad Victoria, named after Queen Victoria: https://fr.wikisource.org/wiki/Page:Auguste_Escoffier_-Le_Guide_Culinaire-_Aide-m%C3%A9moire_de_cuisine_pratique,_1903.djvu/997

(There are multiple dishes named after her or made in her honor)

Amerigo Vespucci..

A who land named after me?!! Wow! So when do we go to see the Vestpussy?

Someday he'll have gulfs and lakes named after him as well!

Haters will say the Caesar salad wasn't named after Julius Caesar, but the astute student of history will notice that the salad was named 2,000 years after the emperor was.

He has fucking month named after him.

In fact the entire calendar ~~is~~ (edit: was) named after him

Tyr, Odin, Thor, and Freja'd like a word. (The sun & moon don't speak, or they'd've joined in.)

Saturn: Am I a joke to you??

The calendar is named after

Gregory XIII, unless you still use the Julian calendar.

Ah i got them mixed up, good catch. Still he had the entire calendar named after him.

That ain't me

He's also the origin of Tzar, living on as dictators in Eastern Europe and the US.

And kaiser.

Also the origin of king, which is what tzar means.

So really all of them just mean Leader. It's actually something I find interesting. The way we say leader is highly determined by if we like the person/their country/where we are. Like everytime you hear the news say "Supreme Leader"? Thats just them choosing to translate whatever the local version of "leader" is into english in an inflammatory way. It's also why we call the Saudi Crown Prince that and not "Supreme Leader of Saudi Arabia" because they're an ally. Despite him being a total despot. Caesar was literally the word for the leader in the roman empire. It's what you called the Emperor. So all the languages that got latin influence in them have words for leader that come from it.

Respected Comrade General Secretary in Korea becomes "Supreme Leader" in the US.

Ayatollah meaning "Sign of God" in Iran becomes "Supreme Leader" in the US.

Kamala Harris being called the "Border Tzar" in the election is just her being the lead for border issues. But saying that is boring so they say Tzar.

It's literally all just PR. Which is why so many places words for leader come from Caesar. Because Rome was seen as this impressive place and future leaders wanted to emulate it. So they called themselves after its leaders. Then you'd have a revolution and the old terms would be toxic. So the new governments would come up with new terms. Executive, Prime Minister, President, General Secretary, Premier, etc. So many words all to mean the same damn thing just because of PR.

Euphemism treadmill.

I always thought it was interesting how the term "president" began to proliferate very quickly after the US empire got big enough.

I think Caesar in particular is more interesting. The original Latin pronunciation is (somewhat disputed, being a dead language and all) likely something along the lines of Kai-tzar. Western Europe emphasized the first syllable, leading to king, while Eastern Europe emphasized the second syllable, leading to tzar.

This also reveals specific linguistic differences in how language works. English to a great extent, and other romance languages to a lesser extent, usually have the accent on the first syllable of the word, while eastern european languages have a lot more variety in which syllable of the word is emphasized.

I was gonna say that the c-section is also named after him but i checked before posting and its apparently not true.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesarean_section#Etymology

Speculations that the Roman dictator Julius Caesar was born by the method now known as C-section are false.

Might've been the other way around, his family was named after the procedure:

The term has also been explained as deriving from the verb caedere, 'to cut', with children delivered this way referred to as caesones. Pliny the Elder refers to a certain Julius Caesar (an ancestor of the famous Roman statesman) as ab utero caeso, 'cut from the womb' giving this as an explanation for the cognomen Caesar which was then carried by his descendants.

I assumed it was named after being stabbed.

"Eh tu, Beverly?"

That's just called a Karen Salad, then. A Caesar Salad's already been fully perforated before plating and offers no purchase for more knives.

Huh, learn something new everyday. Thanks for sharing that.

The sentence right after makes it pretty obvious why too:

Although caesarean sections were performed in Roman times, no classical source records a mother surviving such a delivery, while Caesar's mother lived for years after his birth.

There was no proper understanding (or possibility) of sterile surgery back then, so a c-section was just a death sentence.

Ave, trve to Caesar!

Depressing clothing choices. LMAO

How could you forget República Bolivariana de Venezuela?

Unfortunately a dead comm on a terrible instance after the power hungry admin made the comms only active contributor quit.

Not entirely dead, but unfortunately a lot less active than when @PugJesus@piefed.social was still around, but occasionally still gets new posts, and yours would fit right in.

True, but I would never contribute to a .social community.
