Press [X] to reload muscle memory

(Tho it's a hella good feeling putting old 1k hours of training to good use & finding that you can still play effortlessly-ish. You are just 10+ years older now, no biggie. You'll be dead soon, so play the damn game.)

This is why i never finished Bloodbourne.. twice. Fantastic game. Take a month off. Load in, walk around in a few circles. Absolutely nothing to reference for what my goal or progress toward it was. Probably taking notes would help, yeah.

This is my biggest hurdle to No Man's Sky, NGL. Thankfully, there's an option to reset a quest to a more local star system, but that can be tedious if one's near the end of said quest, as it completely undoes any progress before moving the marker to a spot closer to me.

Maybe I'll get to it this time, maybe I'll get distracted and run out of playtime.

That's the real game, ya know? 🤷🏼‍♂️

I have around 40 hours in No Man's Sky and it was a blast. Had to concentrate on university for a few weeks, and that was the death of my playthrough. I tried a couple of times to continue, but yeah I just see 10 quests in my quest log and have no clue what I was doing before.

The thing is, I could totally relearn it again - but I already know I'll have to take a larger break again soon, so what's the point if I have to then put a bunch of relearning time in again the next time I want to play...

Not to mention that the Steam overlay's unreliable at best, so pulling out of a session to look up something that could easily've been standard issue is unfortunate. 🥲

Steam overlay has a "Notes" feature to keep your thoughts and allows you to resize however you want and optionally overlay it on top of your game instead of having it hide when you minimize the steam overlay, for quick referencing recipes/guide info etc. it also persists through sessions. I frequently use this in survival games or rogue like games to write myself a debrief before I get off at the end of the night knowing that I won't remember certain details tomorrow.

Hahaha, that's awesome. I've still just been taking physical notes with pen and paper like it's the 90's but I'll have to check this out

I actually still use pen and paper for certain things that are easier, e.g. planning out rows of different crops in Stardew Valley preparing for a new season so I know exactly how many seeds to buy in the morning. I think our flavors of ADHD will determine what works best for each of us, but god damn the notes feature in steam is helpful

That's how we did it on the 80s, too- though, we were also typing out the code in order to play in the first place, so 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yep, this, the integrated guides section and the browser are great features that are handy for anyone

I quite liked this in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II

This was incredibly helpful for me, as I took a long pause between playing after ending up on the second map

Cool! I'm on the last quest of the first game and will be starting KCD2 at some point. I got sidetracked by horror games (tis the season). The Medium and Silent Hill 2 are so good I decided to buy Cronos as well. I'm on a Bloober kick.

...huh. if they implement this, I might start playing rpgs. Right now I only play games with no plot because a busy week at work means I don't remember the plot anyway...

I hate being in a society /s

I came back to play Celeste after months and spent like 2 hours racking up deaths playing on a self-imposed ultra hard mode because I forgot there was a grip/climb mechanic. I was barely scaling some jumps to ledges by the skin of my teeth after crashing into the wall 100 times before I accidentally rediscovered the button. Didn't stop me from dying hundreds of times still, but at least for less stupid reasons... usually.

I want a grown-ups only lobby for online games with shorter play sessions and games that end by 8:30 so we can go to bed.

Pokemon FireRed (and LeafGreen) does this!

By the way, these "flashbacks" aren't static images. Your player sprite would be animated doing the last thing it did in that frame!

Also, the controls are simple enough in this game. No need for any tutorials.

The best part to me is how it emulates the anime recaps

I think it's the opposite (unless fire red specifically is inspired by the anime?)

I was gonna say all the games were but I forgot red and green came out first lol

I'd assume fire red was mirroring the anime, though. I mean there were definitely anime recaps before it

This was such a great implementation. I want this in literally every game.

There's a journal feature in DPPt too! Not as dynamic as it was in FRLG though

Ahh nostalgia! The last ones i played, next thing i know they've got pokemon modelled after a garbage bag. 🫩

Leave Trubbish alone, he's one of my favorites.

Damn, that's a cute name. I could imagine a street dog with it.

Doing Seymour Asses dirty

You beat me to it. As soon as I saw this post I immediately thought of FRLG, which are probably my favorite Pokémon games. The only change I would make would be to implement the phys/spec split

Honestly, we need more ADHD-friendly accessibility features in life overall.

I really hate that ADHD doesn't get taken seriously as a disability, because having it certainly makes me feel disabled compared to most people.

Disabilities in general don't get taken seriously. In addition to ADHD, I have an eye deformity that requires $5000/year special contact lenses and just keep getting told to pound dirt :/

You're not perhaps talking about keratoconus?

Lol indeed, I'm surprised someone else knows about it.

It's a terrible fucking disability but there's like no research into it and insurance thinks they know better than ophtomologists

I feel like an extraterrestrial when someone tries to teach me a new board game. I don't understand what they're telling me, and they don't understand what I'm asking (or WHY I'm asking it). I feel like the instructions could almost always be expressed succinctly as a flow chart, but I've never actually encountered that in the wild.

A flow chart? That's interessing... I never made a board game but if i ever happen to, be assured that i am prolly gonna use one, it just seems such a good idea

I wish I had this when I was playing the pre-Persona 3 games. There are zero reminders, aside from maybe a character telling you not to go to x because we have to go to x. I ended up taking a lot of notes and reading a guide for Innocent Sin.

I generally make notes for myself or only focus on one game at a time.

This is the main reason I hate quests. I would start something, not play for a month or so, come back and having to figure out where I had left off. By the time I was caught up, my gaming time was over.

Detailed quest log/journal is a must. I hate it when quest logs don't show what you've already completed.

Ok, I have to break into the office to steal the trophy but WHY? Talk to Fred, WHO THE FUCK IS FRED?

The reason i dropped out of the worst in Stardew Valley: too many characters!

I had this issue too with stardew valley then i realized i can just not interact with all of them, i just remember the key ones and use the menu to view all characters names and faces if i need it for a quest

You can bet money I never remembered anyone's birthday or the upcoming town events. :(

You can buy a calendar as a house upgrade that tells you all this stuff!

Ooh! Might be time to revisit the game then. Thanks!

This is infuriating specially when doing multiple side quests in parallel.

At least you got that far. Usually I run out of time before mandatory updates are done.

This would be the best gift

The whole reason I have to play RPGs all at once, no bouncing between games. I WILL forget what I was doing if I take more than a couple weeks off from playing. I'm really trying my hardest to get through Dawnwalker so I can get onto the other half dozen games waiting for me.

It's why I don't play certain games like Civ. I have to keep playing in one sitting to finish or I'll forget what I was doing, such is so frustrating.

I was playing a Professor Layton game and it had a recap of the past thing you were doing every time you opened the game. Loved it, so helpful

Y'all have addiction problems if you're playing so many games that you can't remember how they work.

See I'm a game addict but have a solution: I pick one game a year, and play it 3 days straight with minimal sleep, and a decent trainer to skip the grindey parts.

By day 3 - BOOM - my desire to play or even finish the game is gone. I don't even know how Tsushima ends, nor do I want to. I came for the Kurosawa kick and I got it. Now back to life

Y’all have addiction problems if you’re playing so many games that you can’t remember how they work.

Unsure if trolling or just a dumbass. But when so many games create narrative that is required to drive the story forward, and you have complex controls for parrying, wear attack, strong attack, rolling, dodging, enemy attack recognition, etc... And you've played 8 games since the last time you touched this game and forget everything because it's been 10 months...

Absolutely insane take. More power to you if that's how you have fun.

Back when you could write your own savefile names i‘d cadge together some shorthand for the filename to help: sdqstswordgetthing.sav or some such. “Side quest to get sword get the [item] next on the list.”

A lot of games still have that option. I mostly see it for VNs, which is really useful if you're going for certain routes.

That's why I love retro gaming. No saves, no elaborate narrative, just two buttons and a D pad. Easy in, easy out.

I think that such a limited control scheme FORCED devs to be creative. And thus we're so many unique and beautiful experiences born. There's something to be said for working around/with the limitations you're dealt.

What do you mean, no QuickTime events?!?!

Final Fantasy XIII-2 did something like this with a recap when you restarted. Really helped with the “now where was I again?” moments.

Witcher 3 has a little bit of that but could be better for sure

Here's a reminder of the last things you did and where you need to go next.

“Your current objective is trying not to cum while playing this game. The last thing you did was cum while playing this game.”

One of the reasons it took me do long to beat the main quest on skyrim, and I'd always convince myself to just start over because this time for sure I'll get through it all

How many stealth archers did you roll up?

Omfg EVERY ZELDA

I do this for myself because same lol. I post PC so I usually keep a text document open so I can write down things I'm working on or, things I need to know I finished or, quests or whatever.

Smart!

In stardew and Minecraft they have signs. I have signs in different areas for different reminders of what I'm doing just in case I lose my notes lol

The controls are the biggest obstacles for me, and it's not really even about ADHD to be honest.

Virtually every single modern game insists that it must use every single available button on the controller for vital operations. Most of the time it strikes me as completely unnecessary to be that way.

And even games that are of the exact same sub-sub-sub-genre where it should all be pretty standardized (the gameplay itself certainly is) decide to have completely different controls.

If I can't finish a game in the 2 - 3 winter months of "down time" I have, during which time I might get 4 - 6 hours of week to play, then I usually won't even bother. Because if I don't finish it then, it means 6 - 8 months later when I get another chance to pick it up again, I will have forgotten how to play.

Same here. If a game has combos or special attacks that require remembering button combinations, that's a hard no for me. Also, anything with special timing that requires practice and remembering different enemy types. I much prefer simple combat like Gears of War or Skyrim that I can pick up after a year wherever I left off.

This is why Satisfactory should have a built-in Kanban board!

Nah. I just finished a playthrough with a friend and my experience is you just can't plan that game. Go with the flow and shit will sort itself out. If you plan for more than the milestones, you'll fail.

We need this!!

I think some games implement a reminder of sorts for quests and stuff. A reminder for the controls, though, would be great.

This is a thing they promise every time new consoles come out and then it never makes it to release. Or maybe it did and no developer ever used the feature.

The Gothic Remake summarises the last few beats of the story on the loading screens.

Edit: And sometimes the hero will think about his next steps when you sit down, kind of like Life is Strange, but not as elaborate.

a summary of your progress and what you were doing, maybe even an animated one, would actually be a reasonable use for llm.

I'm tired of having llm shoved everywhere except where it would actually be useful.

that being said, if some game implemented it and it ended up being trash, I wouldn't be surprised
