I can't even fathom who they THINK their base is, that putting "$20 minimum wage" would be a turn off

Their target demographic are petty bourgeoise business owners who don't want to pay they employees and wannabe petty bourgeoise business owners who dream of one day owning their own business and then never paying their employees, who believe that being paid more as an employee will somehow be a hindrance to that goal.

Grew up in a very red state and can tell you they're targeting everyone who got a college education and their first job was <$20. It's another thing to get you to fight people in your class so you don't start looking at what the rich are doing. "How dare that uneducated person think they deserve to make $20, its not supposed to be a livable wage because minimum wage is for high schooler first jobs." Or something along those lines.

Yeah I've been getting endless ads about how "James Talarico supports LGBTQ rights" in those terms and yet it's Republican attack ads. That's been the primary republican strategy here I guess, since Ken Paxton himself is a ghoulish freak who is hated by literally everyone, so they don't even mention Paxton.

They even texted me a "he's for they/them but not for YOU" and I'm... Nonbinary and generally go by they/them

Petty bourgeoisie.

There's a lot of Americans who have been propagandized into thinking that good things are actually bad and bad things are actually good. That, and the higher-paid workers and business owners who have a material connection to this ideology, and who are disproportionately represented in the voting population.

They're probably fishing for people they can galvanize. I'm not sure how many people take the spirit of contrarianism against these things to the polls, rather than just staying home and distrusting the political system further.

Small business owners and landleeches I'd guess, they're the ones who would at this kind of shit

Statistically there are more workers than owners.

It makes ZERO sense to make that a message to send out to people who, they know beyond 100% of a doubt, do not own a business.

Imagine how many people who had no intention of voting getting a "THEY'RE GOING TO FREEZE YOUR RENT" text

You overestimate Americans. Many American workers would look at these things, think "wow if these things that directly help me happen, I'll lose my job." And then they stop thinking and vote Republican

A previous neighbor of mine has been struggling with her health both physical and mental for years and as a result has a very hard time holding down jobs. That makes it very difficult for her to manage her finances and so he's always just a step away from being evicted from her 500 sq ft studio apartment that she shares with her giant dog, 2 cats, and bird. The city is known to have extraordinarily high rent due to a complete shortage of housing and zoning rules that has been going on for decades now.

There's a proposition to introduce more housing in the city by building mid-rise apartment complexes near downtown which will help lower housing costs, especially near downtown. Every business in the city is against it because they want to save the parking lots and empty storefronts.

This neighbor, who is exactly the type of person this proposition is aimed at helping along with the rest of us, is out on the street corners holding signs and telling people to vote it down. When I asked her why, she said because it's going to lower property values....

This is your average USian voter.

Being a renter concerned about property values I'm fucking dead.

But do tell me about how material conditions outweigh idealism.

I don't think most people are like that neighbor.

I'm not entirely sure about that. My partner just saw a nextdoor post from her just a couple hours ago and there are so many other people agreeing with "we need to save the public parking spaces and keep property values up".

Oh FFS NYC has a lower crime rate than Fort Worth, which is in Rehmet’s district.

What about gun registration but it's like a Subway punch card and every time you register 9 guns the government sends you a free gun?

Gun control laws, but they're actually about promoting responsible gun ownership and preventing people from going postal, and not about disarming minorities.

Maybe not an American bugbear but when i was a kid up here my grandpa would take me to the rod and gun club sometimes. They had a biiig poster on the wall of an excavator piling up hundreds of rifles with text overlaid "Gun registration? Just ask Australia how that went for them"

Wasn't Australia's gun confiscation in response to a mass shooting, the Port Arthur massacre? The idea that a government could accomplish something like that is alien to the USian mind. Canada's recent ban is very sus to me coming as it did on the heels of a shooting spree perpetrated by someone who was clearly a government informant of some kind. But the complete lack of action of mass gun bans in the US after Sandy Hook as many people point out is good evidence that we'd never get something like that in the states. I think of how Serbia a year or two ago had two mass shootings, one at a school, and it resulted in nationwide protests and calls for the president to resign, in the US that's a slow year.

Wasn't Australia's gun confiscation in response to a mass shooting, the Port Arthur massacre?

Yes, though I had to learn that myself. Nobody was going to add that to the propaganda poster

David Flippo

my take is they did an AI pass off at the actblue level and some wires crossed and the call lists got merged in whole or in part, or they gave the AI access to both red and blue training sets at once, and the result is lots of mistaken affiliation

I got a JD Vance pocket puller last week lol
