ChapotraphouseOn this day in 1965, the September 30th Movement assassinated six Indonesian Generals, beginning a period of West-backed mass murder of alleged communists, religious minorities, and ethnic Chinese people. At least 500,000 were killed.
The assassinations were blamed on the Communist Party on Indonesia (KPI) by the army and various civic and religious groups, and the resulting campaign of mass murder and arrests, backed by several Western powers, led to the ousting of Indonesian nationalist President Sukarno, the deaths of anywhere from 500,000 to 3 million people, and the installation of Suharto, a brazenly corrupt anti-communist, as President.
Blaming the KPI for the assassination of the generals, Suharto's forces began purging insitutions of alleged Sukarno and PKI loyalists, arresting and summarily executing many important PKI figures. As leftists, real or alleged, were violently removed from civil and military institutions, reactionaries began directing violence towards ordinary civilians.
The campaign of repression was both widespread and brutal; victims were tortured, impaled, beheaded, and rivers were left congested with masses of corpses. The most conservative estimates suggest 500,000 people were killed in total, while higher estimates range from 2-3 million.
Western powers, including the U.S., Britain, Australia, and Sweden, both supported and directly aided the anti-communist pogroms. In 1962, three years before the killings began, both the U.S. and British governments that it would be necessary "to liquidate Sukarno".
The U.S. trained more than 1,200 anti-communist military officers, providing them weapons and economic assistance. During the massacres, the U.S. supported the Indonesian military's actions, even providing the government with lists of suspected communists to target.
British Foreign Office documents declassified in 2021 revealed that British propagandists secretly incited anti-communists, including army generals, to eliminate the PKI, and used "black propaganda", propaganda intended to create the impression that it was created by those it is supposed to discredit, due to Sukarno's hostility to the formation of former British colonies into the Malayan federation from 1963.
Western media and politicians repeated false propaganda from Suharto's Indonesian government downplaying the violence while also celebrating the violent repression taking place. Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt wrote in the NY Times "With 500,000 to 1 million Communist sympathizers knocked off, I think it is safe to assume a reorientation has taken place" The NY Times also published a racist article saying the murders were to be expected in "violent Asia, where life is cheap".
American oil tycoon H. L. Hunt called Sukarno's ousting the "greatest victory for freedom since the last decisive battle of World War II." Time magazine described the suppression of the KPI "The West's best news for years in Asia" and praised Suharto as "scrupulously constitutional."
The politicide ended in 1966. Sukarno died under house arrest in 1970. Suharto would rule as head of the Western-backed military "New Order" regime for over 30 years, while amassing a personal fortune. The massacres continue to be downplayed in the official Indonesian historiography.
In his 2020 book "The Jakarta Method", journalist Vincent Bevins argues that the massacre provided the blueprint for American campaigns of suppression of leftist movements around the world. To this day, no Western government has apologized for their involvement in the Indonesian politicide.

I was more talking about how multiple podcasts immediately cut all ties with him (and some scrubbed any episodes he appeared in from their archives), his upcoming book got cancelled, and he got removed from nebula. There are probably some people who cut ties I missed, but it really seems like every professional contact has been both quick in action, and pretty complete with what they were doing. :::

Kind of funny to me that I as I became more politically / philosophically communal, I also became more radically self-centered. In the context of my life, I have spent too much time worrying about and thinking about other people's lives, and having little in return. Kinda "externally surrounded by people but internally alone" kinda deal. Using social media for decades at this point, I can very succinctly say that the feeling of forever observing others but never having one observe you feels extemely isolating and debilitating.
I don't really want to be "observed," however. I don't want that at all. I would rather just enjoy myself, observe myself.
My connections with others feels more genuine now, despite my "selfish revelations." It actually feels more like I just learned to be a person instead of a servant who fawns over others at all times.

That's fuckin wild. The metro where I am just has a number, I text the stop I am at and it tells me when the bus is expected to be there with +/- ~5 minutes of accuracy. The closer it gets to the stop the more accurate it is. It's incredibly simple and just pings the bus' own gps route/traffic estimates. That is ridiculously invasive for something so simple.
It used to be an app that you punched in where you were and where you wanted to go and it arranged the best route, alternative routes, and the arrival time of everything involved. You could also see where each bus and train was approximately, and it would show delays. It wasnt perfect by any means, each step of this was full of errors.
Now it works worse, the design has been turned into bubbles so you can't actually see the times and it doesn't work.

Yeah we have an app too but it doesn't require enabling any of that shit, it just uses google maps as a template and then shows exactly where all the buses currently are on their routes which is neat. I imagine yours is for a larger city so our simplified version works well enough but there are still like at least 40 different routes in a city of 80,000+
As long as the local bus and trian companies were involved it would show the route. So I could theoretically find myself a route to neighbouring countries. Which was totally useless but a little cool. Now I can't find the bus time to get me to the train station

Would you say the actual method is specifically using the assassination of a few people as justification for the murder of thousands of communists/communist adjacent people and do a coup after you spent years building up opposition and priming for a coup, or the actual building up for a coup because you've noticed a rising communist movement and then doing it?

Less work should be a cause for celebration but under capitalism it's a dread of not being able to keep up with bills and debts, we should really do something about that.
For real, I am for the first time not working full time, and while it is enough to pay my bills and rent, I am left with about $25/day in leftover income each month that has to go to food, bus fair and any other extras I want and maybe saving $100 a month if I buy literally nothing else. Maybe a beer or two after work. Working on cutting out the drinking but still ffs I am thinking of getting a second job just so I can have a little bit of spending money and more savings. It's fucking ridiculous we have to live like this but I do enjoy not working 40+ hours a week for the first time in my life.
That $25 a day might seem like a comfortable amount but I don't have a kitchen and am forced to buy food most days since I have nowhere to keep significant amounts of groceries or any means to prepare anything that can't go in a microwave or air fryer. I'm thinking about just buying one of those giant packs of Ramen noodles and living off that most days while getting an occasional salad at the grocery store my mom works at since I can get her employee discount.
