Apple Maps still shows the incorrect name for Lake Ontario, and the Gulf of Mexico.
However, CoMaps shows the correct names for both. Yay CoMaps FTW!!
That really just depends on the convention of whatever the mapping software is. Openstreetmap has a "name=*" block for places, but it can also have "official_name=*", in addition to many other language names. Generally, software to actually display the map isnt going to show all of the names cause that would be a mess, but it might show whatever is listed under "name=". If you are in a foreign country, though, you might also want the "name:(en)=".
Personally, my comaps is set to display "name:(en)=" and if that doesnt exist, fall back to whatever the local language is (what's in "name="). Honestly, I wish they could make it more configurable, so I could have it display both.
The convention in openstreetmaps is that "name=" is for what people who live there use/what's on physical signage. Since everyone still calls it "lake ontario" that name sticks. In places with legitimately different names from the people who live there, like Switzerland, they just do / names for each language.
Apple maps probably just provides the "official" name for everything. There's pros and cons to everything, and openstreetmap isnt exactly consistent with their stated methodology. Like openstreetmap uses the official name for "unnamed mountain" and not the nazi collaborator name that people actually use (not that I'm complaining), which they should technically be using according to their methodology.
All very interesting. More configurability seems the way to go for OSM / CoMaps. AND what is the nazi collaborator name of "unnamed mountain"? I will gladly call it anything other than the nazi name, fyi.

Unnamed Mountain it is. Thanks for the history lesson! I'm sure the mountain itself is not to blame. And have to wonder if there is an indigenous name which would be unsullied, and historically prior to the name given by colonizers.
Renaming something isn't going to change how people refer to it.
