The amount that ive had to argue that Ukraine and Palestine are different countries and it isnt hypocritical to support the latter and not the former has been absolutely exhausting over the last 4 years or so. They are not remotely similar situations and therefore should be considered differently.

I feel like there needs to be a new term similar to how it's called Holocaust denial when the holocaust is compared to things like the soviet gulag system or famines in China. It's Palestinian genocide denial to compare the occupation of Palestine to the Russian occupation of Eastern Ukraine. Like it's not even close and any normal person should be horrified that they're being compared like this. Russia simply isn't committing a genocide. They've probably committed war crimes or killed civilians, but this isn't comparable to the scale and cruelty that the Zionist entity has committed
Yeah Russia has shown immense restraint when you consider the imbalance of power there (power dynamics ) compared to what Israel is doing. its also super weird how ukrainians get portrayed as a monolith resisting russia. i have a lot of friends from ukraine and none of them are as emotionally invested in the war as your average lemmy liberal; they just want people to stop dying and to be able to have some semblance of a normal life again.

I do not have any friends in Ukraine but I do know a guy in Russia that I was talking to literally the night the "SMO" started and when it happened both of us were sure it was just NATO fearmongering and then watched in real time both of us in horror knowing exactly how all this was going to play out. Not saying that Russia should not have intervened but that they should have done so way sooner.
I still remember being told that Donbas and Crimean independence were "a Russian plot to justify invasion" and the evidence for this was, "too many people voted in favor of it, it was clearly fake"

Yeah but this cuts to the core of the lib "anarchist" principle of right to self determination. Crimea and Donetsk both did not want to be a part of "Ukraine" so I ask them if they actually believe in the right of self determination. Of course they will say they were coerced into joining the Russian Federation but then that leads to easy followups about the limits of anarchism. You are forced to chose which state you want to live under, same goes for talk of the Kurdish resistance, look how that turned out for them.

You are correct that the meme is misogynist and that there's some cause for concern with this not being obvious to someone, but you really don't need to take such an accusatory and disparaging tone interpersonally to someone who by your own account genuinely just didn't understand. They didn't even contradict you, they just asked for an explanation, even if we agree it would be better that no explanation was required because the problem is quite obvious.
I said what I said because it is telling that there are massive blind spots for this sort of thing even in a space like this, not that it is specifically that user being a problem. It is structural and cultural. I guess I could have elaborated more on that I was just annoyed.
