The old WW2 documentaries that show German townspeople escorted through the camps by the Soviets after the war showed genuine shame and disgust in lots of the ordinary people of Germany. That will never happen in Israel. The Israeli version will be something different altogether, watching the horror with glee and arousal.
A lot of the people showing disgust are absolutely faking it though. People local to the camps knew.

"Secret" is an exaggeration, done partly to try to absolve most Germans. The idea that it was a secret that minorities were being slaughtered doesn't really make sense when people were killed in the streets, there were publicized executions, the leadership openly called for extermination (though they sometimes used "deportation" euphemisms), they boasted about their eugenics programs of "euthanizing" the disabled, people in Nazi occupied land sometimes did the pogroms themselves, etc. There were also, of course, refugees in the thousands who fled Poland during the invasion and occupation and talked about what they saw. No one who was earnestly anti-genocide would have been fooled by this. Anyone who made an effort to investigate or even just tried to think about it a little would come to the conclusion that the Nazis were slaughtering people. The full industrialized scope was probably a genuine surprise to people, but the killing in more general terms was obvious.
It would be more accurate to say that there was a half-hearted kayfabe that most of the Jews, etc. were in generally "just" being made destitute and put in prisons, but it wasn't a trick, it was just a normalized view to give people the social license to look away from the reality. In that way, it is a lot like western media portrayals of the Gaza genocide, except of course today it is more blatant because we have endless footage.
Yeah, my partner's great-great(?)-grandparents were pogromed in what is now Ukraine sometime in the 19th century. Having an entire town turn on you in the blink of an eye is very fucking believable. I truly believe the majority of German society knew what was going on, we have amerikkkans treating Alligator Alcatraz as a historical landmark worth traveling to. The antisemitism of Ukrainians (and antisemitism is such a tame word for how hateful they were) was also recorded in black and white footage; absolutely demonic how they behaved; apparently the Nazis liked the Ukrainians because they believed the Ukrainians hated Jewish people more than they (Germans) did
