I'm not so surprised that a completely gutted oversight apparatus leads to food contamination becoming so much more common, what I really want to know is how some of these contaminants get into the food. Like, at what point in the supply chain of cinnamon you get exposed to enough lead to warrant a warning? I guess it's a feature of sprawling global food supply chains and the incentive to maximize profits, but the specific moments these contaminants enter the food is such a mystery to me.
Spices like cinnamon, turmeric, and more have been known to be consistently contaminated with lead and other heavy metals for at least a decade
Yeah this is one of those things where the truth is people just haven’t paid attention until recently

I remember looking into this (or previous instance) but this is apparently somewhat common and it is often deliberately adulterated with lead as a sweetener. May not apply to cinnamon itself as opposed to products with cinnamon

Lior Cinnamon Ground Seasoning (UPC 794711005484) was distributed to retail stores, grocery stores, delis, and supermarkets located in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida & Illinois between 11/18/2025 and 09/07/2026.
The product is packaged in 90 g transparent plastic containers (case pk of 6units). The lot code GAP11304 can be found on the side of the container under the ingredient line.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
The recall was the result of a sample collected and analyzed by Maryland Department of Health (MDH) that revealed the product contained elevated levels of lead.
Also seems a bit strange that Maryland MDH picked it up but Maryland wasn't called out as 1 of the 6 states where it was sold? Maybe one of the other states contracts the testing out to them, but I'd probably be wary of anything with that label regardless of where I bought it.
They are advising you to return it to the store or throw it away. I'd mark it as dangerous and keep it as evidence. I'd talk to a healthcare professional about prolonged lead exposure and if they had any kind of reaction then I'd probably talk to a lawyer.
