Oh yay, I got the email saying "reservation queue" and wasn't really sure what that meant - I assumed it was "you've not won this round, but you're in the queue if someone drops out".

The emails are sent out in batches (according to someone in this thread, it does make sense though). It means the email batch you're in wasn't sent yet, so you still have to wait for the email. I also haven't gotten an email yet.

Depends on how they're deciding ordering. It could be that earlier waitlist emails mean higher on the list. But it could also be a different system.
It could also be when you put in to the raffle, you're in line. Then on raffle close time, they start at the beginning of the line and rng you a number between 1 and the number of people in line, setting your order, and if you get a number within however many units they have, you win a reservation. With the waves of emails just being them going through chunks of people, eliminating undesirables and cheaters and bots and stuff.
Like the first 10 people who put in initially could all get the highest (worst) numbered slots in the order. And if you haven't gotten an email at all yet, you could still rng slot #1, assuming it's available.
It could also just be a massive shuffle at all once and them just vetting the accounts.
I'm really curious to how they're actually doing it. It could absolutely be more robust, and it's exciting to imagine them really getting carried away with the method. Like total rng ordering with tie breaking or something silly. Or like a recursive iterative sort for no reason. These raffles ran by scientists can get crazy nerdy quickly. Maybe they'll talk about it and have done something like use hl2 to order stuff somehow.

I mean none of this makes much sense to me. I dunno why they don't just send them all at once...but it seems like sooner would be better than later.

Just checked my email after waking to read this and, yep, wait list. 256GB in Aus. I'm kind of surprised by the demand, honestly. I thought VR was a bit of a dying fad and more of a niche thing.

Don’t want to give anyone false hope, but I got a Steam Machine reservation email about a month after ending up on the waitlist (I’m sadly in the US).
Imagine being disappointed your weren't chosen to overpay for this...
Some of us don't mind spending money on our hobby.
And rather mind getting data scraped by one of the biggest advertisement companies that subsidized their headsets in order to get more data and get bootlickers online to defend their malpractices.

Yeah the wait-list email is very clear that you will be waiting. The reservation email didn't explain things very clearly, so when I got it, I wasn't immediately excited. I was worried I was misreading it, so I went to steam but their verbage has been removed from the page. So I ended up having to Google around to confirm that I should be excited.

I won the lottery for the 256GB variant in the US, for what it's worth. Otherwise, based on the community tracker, it's about a 2:3 ratio of reservations to waitlists so far?

Managed to get on the reservation queue for the 256GB in Canada.
I think Valve used up all of my luck for the foreseeable future, I somehow managed to get a controller at launch, a Machine within a few weeks of launch, and now the Frame.
Still haven't 100% decided if I'll keep my slot, but chances are pretty good I will given I've been looking to upgrade from the Rift S for a long time.
It is very unfortunate that these website only aggregate these numbers after the lottery. These estimates are so dependent on having a random sample and this is not guarenteed anymore (people who got on the waitlist are more/less likely to visit such websites)
I don't actually mind that, as it gives a worst case estimation and it is likely to be better in reality. Better than the other way around

I cannot provide a good source (besides the book "How to measure anything") for this, but probably 50 random participants would be enough to provide a pretty accurate estimate of waitlist wait time. That‘s orders of magnitude less than the data these sites have, but they are probably less accurate.

As you said these sites are likely to overrepresent waitlisted people. As a fellow waitlisted person, I'm using them to get an idea of how "bad" the situation is, i.e. to curb my expectations about moving to the reservation list at some point. Waitlisted people being overrepresented will make the situation look worse than it is, meaning I'm more likely to be positively surprised than negatively.

Considering the condition of the consumer electronics market right now, I would be surprised if the ratio of signups to available units is anything less than 50:1.
