But didn’t they build the cards with Ai frame generation to make things faster? Won’t that fill in the performance hit? /s
DLSS 5 isn’t for gamers. It’s for shareholders.
It's funny how much tech 2k adds to make the players look as real as possible, and it still doesn't look photo real. You can immediately tell it is not real
This is the same problem real-time ray-tracing had. The difference is that there’s a case to be made for (theoretically) easier-to-implement, physically accurate lighting.
The slop filter can sometimes look good in promotional stills, which, I guess, is appealing to marketers who want a legally safe way to misrepresent the product they’re selling?
There are times when ray tracing has blown me away, it can makes games look fantastic. DLSS can look OK in some cases but more often it’s just uncanny valley nightmare fuel.
DLSS 5 (slop filter) you mean? Because the regular old upscaling DLSS doesn't really produce uncanny valley stuff. Only artifacts, and mostly on presets like Performance or Ultra Performance.
And I do also agree about RT. Cyberpunk and Alan Wake 2 both had great visually impactful ray tracing and GTA 6 (as much as it pains me to say it) looks like a fantastic showcase of real-time lighting.
Yeah, the slop filter.
There are some areas in Cyberpunk with the neon and the puddles that look amazing with RT.
I love RTX in CP2077, it looks awesome. Funnily enough, i saw a video segment of DLSS5 in Cyberpunk, and i was astounded - it looked as if it were made for it. https://youtu.be/8r-wEn3CIb8?t=148
RTX is what Nvidia rebranded their GTX cards to. It’s just three random letters chosen to sell GPUs to gamerz™️, they don’t mean anything
I meant RT and the X somehow smuggled itself in lol
Thought i saw a post this week or last from a nvidia insider whon said dlss5 is not for the consumer its for the developers so they pump out horribly optimized game code.
I hate AI as much as the next guy, but it's normal for new graphics tech to be too intensive for the current generation. And it's not just ray-tracing and up-scaling, I remember when Vsync was out of reach for normal gamers.
My man, real-time computer graphics have regressed over the past few years. Just ask all of the TAA smear and noise artifacts for AO and hair.
The point of dlss is to increase fps not ai slop filter and slash fps in half, if they wanted ai slop filter they can make it as rtx filter feature not dlss feature

Hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Oh wait you're serious.
Because Crysis ran out of the box on min spec hardware of the era and no meme ever came out of a system being able to run the game.
It came out 19 years ago. Guy is probably too young to know of a time when hitting 30 fps with most options turned down was considered a win.
Bitch I'm older than Doom.
I'm from the era where games companies had to fit a game onto a physical disc, and they would give out multiple entire map packs with magazines for free.
Back when developers actually made games instead of relying on AI slop filters or ray tracing to do their job for them.
Or just pumping out the same game year after year with a new number after the title.
Why would you ever use this tech for a game like NBA? Most of the time you're playing from a top down perspective and you can barely see any details besides the player jerseys and the ball. You can see their faces when you get an action cam after a score or some shit like that but is it worth it making the game basically unplayable for that?
Like I could see this tech being great for games where character faces being realistic would matter, a game like LA Noir, or Detroit Become Human would benefit a lot. Not fucking NBA.
Also, the characters in the game are actual NBA players rather than fictional characters, so there's a very easy reference point for whether DLSS 5 makes a character look more realistic.
And oh I dunno maybe the developers could just use better base models??? For the perf hit they could be pushing way more polygons and higher res textures at a fraction of the perf loss
Using DLSS 5 takes a special level of stupidity. But using it in something like NBA 2K27... Wow... Humanity really is screwed.
A fool and his money are soon parted.
I assume DLSS 5 will be more useful for post-processing on 3D stills and artwork, than gaming. At least for a while, and of course while the card market is fucked.
I know this is the AI BAD circle jerk, but all the screenshots in that article look amazing.

The problem isn't that they don't look good, it's that they don't look right. Modders extracted the DLSS 5 library from this game and tried using it with a bunch of other games, and it completely changes how characters look (down to altering facial structure).
Combine that with DLSS 5 decimating performance even on the highest end machines, while also coming out when nobody can afford to upgrade their GPU, and it's just a bizarre choice of technology to push right now. It feels like it's being pushed to keep the AI hype train moving despite there being virtually no market for this tech.

But it looks good in stills in this game. It should be obvious why it looks bad in games which assets were never optimised for it and that the highest adjustment level will never be used in a game like the FFVII remake were the model tries to contort the anime faces into photographies.

Says who? If I paid for the game and the tech, can't I be the judge of what looks right? You mention modders, who themselves often completely change the look and feel of a game, and characters.
