the project did include lots of unnecessary excesses, weird decisions that deviated from the will of the masses and eventually alienated themselves from the local communities, so gonzalo is hard to defend as a communist.
But I'd at least give him credit for the effort. despite everything, they did legitimately become a massive threat to capital, which is more than I can say of any current western leftist projects.
