how many video games actually features an older character as the principal character? the only one coming to mind for me is KOTOR 2 where the fact that your character already went on a hero's journey and is kind of sick and tired of that BS is a pretty major theme.
Nier: Gestalt had Dad!Nier, but they just used Brother!Nier in the remake.
As I recall Dad Nier was only ever a ploy to get Westerners to buy the game and was never in any Japanese version of the game
Kinda the other way around - Dad and Brother were console exclusives in Japan, with one being PS3 and the other xbox360, while western audiences only got Dad, as Japanese execs didn't think they'd be interested in a pretty boy protagonist.
I think most military centric games you play as a 30s character, some GTA characters are 30/40 too.
Every Yakuza game, the youngest main character in any of the games (except Haruka) is 29 at the time.

Anyway Japanese games where the protagonist is older, uh: Hotel Dusk, Silent Hill 1 & 2, Shadow Hearts 1 & 2 have some olds in the roster. In Tokyo Jungle you can unlock a salary man. Persona 2 and the SMT games have some older characters, it depends.

The japanese are so crushed by capitlaism and long working hours that the only people they can imagine going on adventures are high school kids on summer break.
Probably. "Shonen" is popular, which means anime/manga aimed at the demographic of 12 year old boys. It's not really surprising that this genre often features settings which utilize child soldiers and have children as main characters.
But when you are a kid you don't want to be a kid, you want to be something big and powerful, like a dinosaur, an anthropomorphic shark or the guy from gargoyles. It's usually when you are an adult that you want to be a kid, because work sucks, not me, school sucked even more.
Kids want to self-insert and imagine themselves in the role of the character though. Same reason Harry Potter was so wildly popular.
Come to think of it most of the extremely famous western kids books have been isekais aimed at kids. Harry Potter is basically an isekai of a normie kid whisked away into the world of magic. Narnia is basically an Isekai. Alice in Wonderland too. Twilight.
I guess you are right. Media named at kids does often have kid protagonists. The Heinlein juveniles also often feature teenagers. Now that you mention it, even dragon ball started with Goku as a kid. In that case the part of the saga were he is a deadbeat dad is more popular.
Kids do also like media about kids like them going on adventures though
There's probably just some cultural aspect to it as well. They weren't kids but I'm reminded of how its famously said that part of the reason why Kojima introduced Raiden in MGS2 was because many female Japanese players complained about Snake being too old and unattractive.
Also I'm reminded of something I once heard about Marlboro (?) having to swap rugged cowboys for rich ranch owners in advertisements in some foreign market (China?) because they were just seen as dirty farmhands, not aspirational figures

But know that you mentioned it, the most Interesting man in the world almost didn't get casted because they wanted someone younger, untill his wife asked: "how can the most interesting man in the world be young?" Wich is sort of what the op is about.

My biggest issue with JRPGs is that they almost exclusively have main characters that are 20-26. It's like they know old people need more polygons.
Edit: and that the story doesn't naturally select for that very narrow age range.

Which is a big shame because the setting is a great opportunity to explore and criticize some great issues like independence, racism, historical materialism, class, penal labor, and whether or not the concept of Europe should have ever been allowed to exist.

It tries to do some of those things sometimes. How the series handles racism feels weird. Most people are horrifically racist against the Darcsen (the broad analogue for the Jews/Roma), even on the Gallian side, but the protagonists seem weirdly passive about the issue even when its their friends or adopted family members being racially abused by randos in front of them.
