Windows is honestly an abusive operating system.

It needs to learn it's place. The operating system exists for the benefit of the human, not the other way around.

The only logical explanation for its popularity is Stockholm Syndrome on a massive scale.

Picking Gentoo for that pic is a dirty trick. Gentoo users wanted it to be that way, on purpose.

(Source: I was one of them back in the early 2000s.)

Yes but what the hell is going on in that linux install window

Looks like a Gentoo install. Set the hard disk up ready for use, put some Gentoo files on it, switch to running from the hard disk instead of the install CD or USB stick, download more Gentoo stuff, compile and install a Linux kernel.

Assuming you're not talking about the one with three languages and a continue button, if you don't get that one I can't really help you.

Since you are likely going to need to create bootable media for any OS install anyway, just use Rufus for Windows 11. Check a few boxes and you don't have to deal with anything you don't want. Well, other than Windows that is.

And after all that you have to use Windows.

That's the worst part!

There's still a lot of setup and "registry" fiddling required after installing Linux as well. Especially if you have weird chips without proper drivers.

Anywho. Two sides of a coin.

There can be depending on distro, which is a whole other really awesome thing about Linux is that you're not locked into one flavour.

Everytime I have installed Ubuntu recently though it's always worked almost flawlessly with no need to adjust drivers. Using both Dell, hp and lenovo devices. It's definitely so much more consumer friendly these days that there is little reason for people to stay with Windows

Somehow remove edge

I am in the EU and the removal doesnt do anything. WinUtil and BulkCrapUninstaller both fail too

Can you dig into the application itself and prise out the executable, leaving the rest of the support files in place?

I go at the binaries in troublesome programs (am looking at you, google keystoneagent, bane of my old computer systems..) that are for macOS, and it works a treat, since the daemons that launch updates will read the path and look for the enclosing folders and miss that the actual binary is gone. I had that fucker silenced UNTIL I made the mistake of grabbing a copy of Google Earth Pro and WHOMP! There it is again.. but I've been too lazy to go haul it out again.

Thanks and fuck you too, google.

NGL, best habit I've picked up over the years was to generally avoid Chrome.

If your are forced to install Windows at gunpoint use either Rufus or an Enterprise license. All other windows licenses are bluntly Adware/Spyware.

I have an OG release of Win 10 Pro on USB - and when I install it, I keep my computer offline and run it for a while on that first build. (Usually I faff around with the desktop and play with the UI for a bit) With that early Win 10 version, it can be installed with no internet and you don't need to set up an online account. Then you go online and update it but by that point, your account is set locally to your machine, not online. Now, it crabs all the time at me to get a cloud account for backups and an Outlook for email (I use hotmail, actually) but I just ignore that.

You can avoid the online account requirement by using pro... although you still need internet without using some form of bypass

Tell that to the wireless card on the laptop I just bought 😔

You can someone swap those out.

It's soldered on, or I'd do that myself. Just wading through driver hell right now trying to make it work.

I haven't installed Windows in a decade with the intent of the device to be online normally. That seems like it should be a crime in and of itself

It's not that it needs to be online. It's that it's chatting with Microsoft about you while it's doing it. They're going to know everything you install, every webpage you go to, everything you do.
