I’ve taken to shutting off the ice machine when the container is full. That way we don’t end up with stale, half-sublimated ice cubes sitting in the bottom of the container. Also gives us the opportunity to clean the bin of needed.

My fridge doesn’t have an ice machine. However, it does make a hum reminiscent of Hypnotoad. I’ll be lying in bed and picturing:

At least if some burglar broke into your house, they'd be immediately entranced, and you'd be safe.

Or:

  • Overnight dishwasher strikes a misaligned pan suddenly
  • Wind causes collar beam in roof to flex taught creating footstep sounds above
  • Toilet fan rattles against sudden negative pressure outside
  • Neighbour lets off firearm indoors
  • Chunk of render decides to break off and fall through the wall cavity

Toilet fan rattles against sudden negative pressure outside

Oh man, I used to live in a very windy area and the bathroom exhaust vent cover would constantly be clanking. I forgot about that little bit of hell from living there.

Toilet fan...?

I think they meant the exhaust fan. But side-note... I once put a little fan in my bathroom to blow on my face while I was pooping (the A/C was out) and it was actually really nice. I considered mounting it to the wall and having a toilet fan for luxurious pooping

From the company that brought you the bidet

The vent fan in the bathroom.

Plot twist: It's actually someone who is extremely enthusiastic about toilets and they like to hang out around your house.

Well in case shit hits the fan...

I'd still be worried about those last two...

One of those isn't the same as the other.

And makes it a purely American anecdote

Also happened in Slovakia.

One I had recently heard of happened in Čachtice in 2023.
48 year old ex police officer was cleaning a rifle, when it fired, shooting through a window, and killing a 30 year old mother who was in a kitchen of opposing building 120m (394ft) away.
Less than a month ago he received a 2 year prison sentence suspended for 3 years, and a ban on owning and using firearms for 8 years.

Used sources (in Slovak):
Markíza's report from 2023
RTVS conviction report from 2026

oh not at all this happened in england

Good bless the king

Ice Machine? Some bourgeoisie shit right there.

Having gone to some Japanese and Korean stores, I think the same thing when I see their appliances. The rice cookers and refrigerators are super different. An example that we now all know about, the Japanese bidet.

I wonder how efficient those always-hot water kettles are

I was being laughed at by a brit about using the microwave to boil my water. I took great offense to that and argued a bit with them. I bought a kettle because someone bought me some fancy tea and it needed the control. I'm sorry unknown brit, you were 100% right about the kettle.

Moral of the story: Always trust a brit when they're talking about something to do with tea.

Oh yeah, I remember seeing videos of world cup travelers being amazed by that this summer. I didn't realize it wasn't a normal thing!

It's slightly offset by the increased energy costs, as the fridge is way less efficient

The fridge is less efficient when there is an ice maker? How? It sounds like you’re basically saying the freezer is always going to be less efficient when there’s something to freeze.

An ice maker is more complex than just manually freezing ice in a tray. You have a bunch of small motors and pumps and things that require more electricity to function, and all of that energy is on top of the energy it takes to cool the freezer (which a non ice maker refrigerator is already doing). Plus, all those things that are inside the freezer space are now generating or adding heat in the space youre using energy to cool, especially the water it’s continuously freezing to make ice whenever it isnt full.

A report from 2020 said that automatic ice maker refrigerators use 14-20% more energy than a normal refrigerator

Did the study take into account opening the door multiple times to get the ice tray in and out vs the tiny hole in the door only being open while ice is flowing?

Also why would there be any pumps? Faucets don’t have pumps and neither does any fridge I have ever had.

Neighbor: sexy time

Nah, it's always the upstairs neighbor putting on clogs and moving furniture at 2 AM

That made me literally LOL out loud

yeah: sexy time

The people in the apartment above me keep moving in and out. Pisses me off, especially since they rearrange furniture in the middle of the night like they're practicing Feng Shui or something.

It never fails to amaze me at just how much decision making power my unconscious self has. All manner of random household noises can happen and it will never wake me up, but the sound of a soft rainfall when I've left my windows open will wake me every time.

Universal truths are universal

Fridge ice machines aren't universal though.

Laundry machine finishing and stove keeping same beep noise
