sauce: my alcoholic escape from reality
uhh ... the japanese are currently trying to make their youth drink more alcohol (despite all the well-understood health drawbacks). so they put out a whole lot of pro-alcohol propaganda.
i suspect that this anime was probably paid-for by the alcohol industry.
i write this just to raise awareness about how bad that is.
I used to have a few drinks every day, and put a lot of effort into cutting back to fewer, and not every day. It was a struggle because I felt like, there is something suffocating and claustrophobic about my default existence, and sometimes being drunk could alter it enough that I felt like myself. Although this was increasingly rare, the possibility made it feel worth it to roll the dice, so I felt very conflicted about cutting back, even though physically it made me feel like shit in general.
Then I tried better drugs and meditation and very abruptly it didn't feel like a struggle at all because it turns out alcohol is next to useless for that purpose. Now I have a drink every few months or if social situations call for it, most of the time I just don't want to.
Just curious, what are the better drugs?
Psychedelics/weed
You can't escape reality through alcoholism, you merely become a part of why it's shitty.
Aye, you feel good in the moment, but you've robbed your own future. Either just with a hangover, or a life you hate waking up to.
the future is shitty either way
It can always be shittier... My take is at least I got to decide on my personal rock bottom.
I feel it's kinda like suicide in a way, my uncle died of causes related to alcoholism when he was 30ish, my mom and grandma and that were debasted ofc, I was not too close to him tho. Besides, it probably lead him to having an even lower quality of life anyways.
Not like I can blame anyone like this or like that or whatever. And I cannot say anything about making your own future worse when I've wanted it to be worse. I just idk. I just feel like saying it doesn't matter is not fair either talking about alcoholism or not because it sometimes makes a difference, even if a small one, technically you can go into nihilism and all but yea.
But mean not like I can tell you what to do or think or whatever yea.
I feel it’s kinda like suicide in a way
But the difference is that you are still alive. I don’t do any kind of drugs, although there are plenty other ways to ruin my own life. Surviving the moment is sometimes more important.
It can get better indeed and for that I actually consider it a somewhat good strategy especially if suicide was also considered. If you are dead it certainly won’t get better.
"I feel it's kinda like suicide in a way" Is different as if I said "It is (like) suicide". It's definately a bad coping strategy and probably raises your chances of actually suiciding in the future but it's not like the ways I cope are great either.
I have a feeling a lot of opiate "overdoses" are similarly suicides. There's a point where you can't imagine quitting and you think you might as well just take more one day when you have it.
You might not be specifically trying to die a specific night but you probably accept that one of those days you will die and you're not fighting it.
It’s morally difficult, of course. There’s a reason we count these among deaths of despair, because borrowing happiness from tomorrow sounds like a fair deal to anyone who expects tomorrow to be even worse than today, or to not exist at all “for tomorrow we die.”
I think pity is the appropriate response, even in the context of remediation/intervention, because despair is the darkest place one can find oneself. While life choices may hasten that descent, including things like alcoholism, despair itself is never a choice.
I absolutely borrow happiness from tomorrow, I very much do pleasurable things in the moment at the expense of a long life because we're looking at a climate apocalypse in my lifetime, and I actively do not want to live through that. If I can have a shorter, but more pleasurable life before shit really hits the fan it seems like a fair trade. I do try not to go overboard or let it control me though because there lies misery.
I've been an incredibly tolerable drunk. I've never been angry, I keep it light, and as far as I know people kept hanging out with me because I was actually funny.
Still your whole world kinda hits the brakes and balances on the two front wheels when you see the term 'echogenic liver tissue'.
It's not liver disease -yet- and I had already been curbing it for a while, but after Covid and my Dad dying(he sucled too for the record, totally not worth the excess) I didn't really keep track of the fact that I was 'refilling' any time I had less than a whole 6 pack at home 'just in case I want more tonight' for about 2 years.
Alcoholics can be shitty people for sure but now I'm just mad at myself because I'm fat and have poor coping skills.
3 months sober. im so bored.
Keep on keeping on, friend. I'm proud of your progress!
What kind of hobbies do you enjoy? I like Gunpla, cross stitch, and Beyblade. Maybe try to find some people who share common interests.
You've got this. One day at a time. You've already had 90 days. What's 10 more?
oh yeah, i don't plan on folding. i drank heavily for like 20 years, and decided i'd had enough. saw it coming and new it would be tough. ive picked up reading, and im gaming more. also knocking out more computer projects.
also i work in a social environment (a bar lol) so im not feeling isolated or anything. the bar has been great about stocking NA beers for me, and i found "fake shots" that i like quite a bit called pathfinder. they are also very supportive so i would feel like a failure if i folded and drank around them. i honestly havent even been enjoying smoking weed as much. i kinda like just being sober.
so the transition has been very smooth so far. but i just have so much more time in my day between not staying at the bar all night, and not being hungover most mornings.
i appreciate your kind words. i was mostly just venting. also being bored and uncomfortable is probably just part of the process of adjusting to my new life, and being less dependant on dopamine and alcohol.
uhh i can recommend computer games (mindustry for example). or cycling, biking, hiking if you're into nature. would be good to have other people who enjoy the same hobby though otherwise it's not interesting.
