It’s often observed on the left that liberals don’t really believe in anything. It’s all moralism, concerns about doing things the proper way, but not in service of a belief. Standards and norms for the sake of standards and norms
So when someone who has that worldview encounters someone who actually passionately believes in something, it can look cult-like to them on a superficial level.
The idea of politics beyond spectacular team sport, anything more than saying nice words or bad words to cover for the latest colonial war, is not within the liberal framework. When you realize their ideology is basically doing apologetics for centuries of violence via imaginary thinking, it’s hard not to say they believe nothing but what they’re told.
