How do you "score" a d8 in D&D. Is this some new rule?

Maybe the Bard put him up to it. In 5e a 5th level bards Bardic Inspiration is a d8.

the joke seems to be that he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about, because on top of that, nobody pronounces "d8" as "date."
