A good rule for Tuesday.
Working five days a week so that you can have two days a week off it is ridiculous. We should swap it.
I leave after 12 hours, but I also work 3-4 day weeks.

What job? I want it. That's like 48 hours in a very neat package...leaving 3-4 fucking days to do fuck all.
I work in a TAC team doing Network Engineering support for firewall and routing products. Since we're 24/7/365, we all take 12 hour shifts and have people on the other half of the world that their "day" is our night.
We used to have that and then they replaced our Kiwi team (it's important to call them Australian all the time, they really enjoy it when you do that) with an Indian team because they were cheaper, but they're also practically in the same time zone as us, I think there's only 1 ⅖ hours difference (yep India is +1.5 UTC for some strang reason) so it doesn't work.

It used to be called work to rule, now it's just work. If the company reward hard work with more work, than I'm disincentivized to do anything other than the bare minimum.
I wouldn't mind so much if they kept track of it and then rewarded a pay rise at the end of something but they don't.

If they want weekend work, they can pay weekend prices (overtime) and inform me of such before the weekend starts. Otherwise, they can fuck off ‘til Monday, because I’m not even answering texts off the clock.

At this point no, but I'll speak to my boss. I'm on contract but I have set hours, so I'll take some time or maybe sleep in a bit more.

Maybe, but I earn way more than industry standard and this will help me squash some debt. So small sacrifices.
As someone not from the US, how exactly does this work? Do they just grab you late on Friday and ask you to work on the weekend? Do they expect you to do it for free?
My office would try to talk you out of working weekends, and if you really had to do something that couldn’t be done in the week they’d try to get you to take time off in the week to make up for it. If you just had to work extra they’d pay you overtime rates, which I think is a legal requirement. They’ll also nag you to make sure you take all your annual leave.
It depends on your industry. Sometimes they will just heap additional work on you and get on your case for not completing it all on time. Sometimes they call on your day off and ask you to come in. Sometimes they go around asking people to stay late every day, and others they just tell you you're not a "team player" if you leave on time.
Mostly it depends on how much they feel the need to hide what they're doing.

I mean, it's a request at that point not a requirement with any consequences. I think that's a lot more reasonable of a way to cover things like call outs than some of the alternatives.
It depends. If you work hourly, you'll get overtime. However, this is mostly an issue with salary, where overtime is not paid. It usually ends up being something along the lines of "we need to make the deadline on XX date" and theres not physically enough hours to do so without working beyond 40 hours a week. My favorite is when the deadline is on Monday, so you either keep working through the weekend to make the deadline, or you miss the deadline and people get mad at you
You don't always get overtime. I work "part"-time, and often end up working 38-40 hours in a week; just before overtime.
My favorite is when you tell them that it's impossible to get done on Monday. They tell you that doesn't matter, it needs to be done Monday. Then get pissed off when it's not done Monday. Like excuse me, I'm not the one who agreed to the customers changes last minute. I'm not allowed to talk to them anymore because I only tell them the truth.

As someone who works I'm healthcare, I wish this were true for me. That and actually being able to take my breaks and not work during my unpaid lunch.
I've been working a bunch of weekends. It's hard to say no to time and a half. Just 8 during the week, gotta get some rest.
Yea it can definitely be nice when you're hourly, but in general it happens more to people on salary because then the company doesn't have to pay extra
Oof, yeah I would not want that deal. Luckily our work falls under the David bacon act so we're a pretty well covered classification as far as wages are concerned.
50 states, 50 sets of rules, all slightly different. Red states are kinda where rich people go to get what they want. People raised there have to play the game or move to a blue state.
Here in Missouri, it's functionally illegal to be homeless. So if you lose everything you're gonna be out of state eventually unless you have a support structure to rely on. Some places don't enforce, but they know they can. It's all so twisted and nobody talks about it.
