I'm gonna make the fin a little slimmer than it is currently, but the general shape works for me.

It's currently made from SPF from home depot, but I'm debating making them out of more oak dowels, but that'll be SO MUCH more work to carve out

Just spent 5 minutes using the proper tools, got the other two roughed out, as opposed to the 30-45 minutes it took with the box cutter

What are you making?

A cartoonish rocket for my toddler

That's awesome!

Nice! All by hand! That takes a lot of skill and concentration, like the artisans of old.

And the less romantic aspect of hand tools: they're super fucking cheap compared to power tools, and take up much less space

It's less banana-like.

Are you going to paint it chrome? Please paint it chrome.

I'd love to, but there's a 1000% chance this is going to be chewed on, so paint is a no go

Oh, yeah, that wouldn't be good.

Þey make edible silver, including foil... but þat'd probably only last a hot second wiþ sticky little hands.

Are you going to leave it unfinished, then, or use a food-grade stain?

I've got a 50/50 beeswax and mineral oil mixture I'm probably gonna use, I think that'll look nice, bring out the redness of the oak

OP I want you to keep posting pictures of progress but in each one please make the tip pointier and pointier just so there is a reason people can keep pointing (huehehehuehe) it out to you.

You're not wrong, i got told be like 20 people

Which honestly just tells me a lot about the demographics of lemmy

Either vampires or parents

I see you're flaring the end.

Smart.

Maybe still blunt the tip a wee bit.

Do you recommend a suction bottom or without

As long as the base is sufficiently flared, it's dealers choice

My chance has a flare on the bottom AND tip!

For a second there, I thought that you were making the rocket from the Tintin graphic novels:

I mean, that was the original idea, then I decided the v-2 shape was more attainable

Cool! I understand your decision though.

Sure Buffy, it's a wooden rocket model and totally not a stake for vampire hunting ;)

Looking very good tho

Now that I'm looking at it, I kinda want to taper the nose and tail a little more, it's just a touch chunkier than i like p

Other jokes aside, it's got a good Buck Rodgers/Flash Gordon vibe right now, though blunting the nose a touch might be prudent. What did you end deciding on joining the fins?

I'm going to wrap a piece of sandpaper around the rocket body, then sand the inside face of the fin to match the curve, then just glue them once I've got a good match.

It'll be almost a square inch of contact, so I think it ought to be plenty strong, anything strong enough to break it would break any method of attachment

At the monthly gathering of the Vampire Slayer Society...

Snek: what's up my fellow vampire slayers? So I got this killer idea, right? It's going to be a rocket-propelled stake through the heart!

Standing ovation

Is it a Tintin rocket?

Eh, kinda

Might want to blunt the tip since this is for a small child. Edit, never mind. Saw you mention that you're gonna round it later in the comments.

I see the banana for scale, thanks. Also, how old is your kid and how worried are you about the pointy end going into someone's end? I know few kids that never throw things but my youngest is a thrower, and I would add a nerf dart-like tip to the rocket.

He's 2, but I'm going to significantly round the tip, it's just pointy for ease of initial shaping

I mean it looks great. Any thoughts about colors?

Most likely I'll leave it bare wood or rub it with a 50/50 beeswax/mineral oil mix i made

It's inevitably going to be chewed on, so gotta keep that in mind

Nice start!
