Can't do anonymous browsing of old Reddit and now you can't do anonymous browsing of new Reddit either.

I'm deeply in love with mainstream enshittification, it's radicalizing people against corporationism and bringing attention to FOSS solutions.

Remember when it was a badge of honor to work for FAANG, MAAMA, whatever you call it?

We're obviously living in a geeky bubble here on lemmy, but I feel like people in general are growing super skeptical when it comes to their attitude towards american corporations.

still working for me so far. frontends also seems to still work.

Use old.reddit.com. Or better yet, don't use reddit at all.

They also demand to install their shitty app. I don't get why I need an app to browse a basic website, I have a perfectly functional web browser right fucking here!

Edit: oh shit, is old.reddit.com dead? Not visiting reddit anymore lol

the most real place on the internet

If one means real-ly badly infested with Langley bots.

Interesting they would do this. I’d noticed Reddit becoming somewhat mainstream over the last year with people mentioning it as a source of information for niche things and I know they just browsed without making an account. Guess that’ll come to an end.

Reddit's been extremely mainstream for like a decade now

This is good because it drives people away from Reddit

It definitely drove me away. And I've never had an account there.

Very annoying, there's a lot of tech support stuff on reddit that I now can't access without logging in. Guess I'll need to make a burner for work.

No need for a burner reddit account. If your job allows you to install the Firefox browser, you can install libRedirect on your own. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/

How long is that going to work when everything needs an account on reddit?

I have libredirect, but none of the instances seem to support old.reddit.com.

WDYM? The instances have their own frontend, they just source the content from Reddit

Yeah I realize I was completely wrong about how they work, my bad. What I suppose I mean is that all the instances I tried either looked too much like the new layout (I think they might've all been redlib) or were just dead. Are there any that look more like the old interface?

ah, well that IDK. Sorry

Fucking finally reddit is curing my insomnia driven browsing of bestofredditorupdates.

Wonder if they'll ever remember to force my old ass account to connect an email to it. Wouldn't mind because it would actually make me leave lol

Here's some more info about this: https://www.neowin.net/news/following-old-reddit-new-reddit-may-be-forcing-mandatory-account-log-in-to-access-as-well/

EDIT: I have since turned on LibRedirect to view any R*ddit content.

Reddit may soon require login for browsing, citing anti-scraping efforts, potentially ending anonymous guest access entirely.

They're trying to protect their precious data that they already sold to AI firms? That's shutting the barn door after the horses have bolted.

And it doesn't make any sense. Bots can easily change where they're scraping... only blocking "old" still allows it thru "new".

Sure it slows down any old bots, but its programming 101 to scrape sites. Or, like... people will just make an account to scrape?? Especially """"ai"""" bros, they can just spin up whatever to proxy through and get around whatever bs they throw up.

Just the laziest lying I've ever seen.

Seconding libRedirect. Its very easy to set up and typically seamless. It also supports other sites like redirecting X to XCancel.

Must have browser addon

I can still access old.reddit.com?

Had it blocked yesterday for the first time.

Think they're still doing AB testing.

I think so too, I can still lurk on old.reddit.com. My city has a surprisingly good subreddit that I lurk on to keep up on local events and news, and I don't need to login yet. I'll probably just abandon reddit once and for all if/when the forced login affects me.

Makes sense, that's really annoying that they're doing that tho.

Nope. Not without signing in.

EDIT: or not without using something like LibRedirect: https://github.com/libredirect/browser_extension & https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/

Same here, we must simply be built different
