ChapotraphouseThe Great Pueblo Revolt, or Pueblo Revolt (1680–1696), was a 16-year period in the history of the American southwest when the Pueblo people overthrew the Spanish conquistadors and began to rebuild their communities. The events of that period have been viewed over the years as a failed attempt to permanently expel Europeans from the pueblos, a temporary setback to Spanish colonization, a glorious moment of independence for the Pueblo people of the American southwest, or part of a larger movement to purge the Pueblo world of foreign influence and return to traditional ways of life. It was no doubt a bit of all four.
The Spanish first entered the northern Rio Grande region in 1539 and its control was cemented in place by the 1599 siege of Acoma pueblo by Don Vicente de Zaldivar and a few score of soldier colonists from the expedition of Don Juan de Oñate. At Acoma's Sky City, Oñate's forces killed 800 people and captured 500 women and children and 80 men. After a "trial," everyone over the age of 12 was enslaved; all men over 25 had a foot amputated. Roughly 80 years later, a combination of religious persecution and economic oppression led to a violent uprising in Santa Fe and other communities of what is today northern New Mexico. It was one of the few successful—if temporary—forceful stoppages of the Spanish colonial juggernaut in the New World.
Life Under the Spanish
As they had done in other parts of the Americas, the Spanish installed a combination of military and ecclesiastical leadership in New Mexico. The Spanish established missions of Franciscan friars in several pueblos to specifically break up the Indigenous religious and secular communities, stamp out religious practices and replace them with Christianity. Active efforts to convert the Pueblo people to Christianity involved destroying kivas and other structures, burning ceremonial paraphernalia in public plazas, and using accusations of witchcraft to imprison and execute traditional ceremonial leaders.
The government also established an encomienda system, allowing up to 35 leading Spanish colonists to collect tribute from the households of a particular pueblo. Hopi oral histories report that the reality of the Spanish rule included forced labor, the seduction of Hopi women, raiding of kivas and sacred ceremonies, harsh punishment for failing to attend mass, and several rounds of drought and famine.
Growing Unrest
While the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 was the event that (temporarily) removed the Spanish from the southwest, it was not the first attempt. The Pueblo people had offered resistance throughout the 80-year period following the conquest. Public conversions didn't (always) lead to people giving up their traditions but rather drove the ceremonies underground. The Jemez (1623), Zuni (1639) and Taos (1639) communities each separately (and unsuccessfully) revolted. There also were multi-village revolts that took place in the 1650s and 1660s, but in each case, the planned revolts were discovered and the leaders executed.
The Pueblos were independent societies before Spanish rule, and fiercely so. What led to the successful revolt was the ability to overcome that independence and coalesce. Some scholars think it was a millenarian movement, and have pointed to a population collapse in the 1670s resulting from a devastating epidemic that killed off an estimated 80% of the Indigenous population, and it became clear that the Spanish were unable to explain or prevent epidemic diseases or calamitous droughts. In some respects, the battle was one of whose god was on whose side: both Pueblo and Spanish sides identified the mythical character of certain events, and both sides believed the events involved supernatural intervention.
Nonetheless, the suppression of Indigenous practices became particularly intense between 1660 and 1680, and one of the main reasons for the successful revolt appears to have occurred in 1675 when then-governor Juan Francisco de Trevino arrested 47 "sorcerers," one of whom was Po'pay of San Juan Pueblo.
Leadership
Po'Pay (or Popé) was a Tewa religious leader, and he was to become a key leader and perhaps primary organizer of the rebellion. Po'Pay may have been key, but there were plenty of other leaders in the rebellion. Domingo Naranjo, a man of African and Indigeneous heritage, is often cited, and so are El Saca and El Chato of Taos, El Taque of San Juan, Francisco Tanjete of San Ildefonso, and Alonzo Catiti of Santo Domingo.
Under the rule of colonial New Mexico, the Spanish deployed ethnic categories ascribing "Pueblo" to lump linguistically and culturally diverse people into a single group, establishing dual and asymmetric social and economic relationships between the Spanish and Pueblo people. Po'pay and the other leaders appropriated this to mobilize the disparate and decimated villages against their colonizers.
August 10–19, 1680
After eight decades of living under foreign rule, Pueblo leaders fashioned a military alliance that transcended longstanding rivalries. For nine days, together they besieged the capital of Santa Fe and other pueblos. In this initial battle, over 400 Spanish military personnel and colonists and 21 Franciscan missionaries lost their lives: the number of Pueblo people who died is unknown. Governor Antonio de Otermin and his remaining colonists retreated in ignominy to El Paso del Norte (what is today Cuidad Juarez in Mexico).
Witnesses said that during the revolt and afterward, Po'Pay toured the pueblos, preaching a message of nativism and revivalism. He ordered the Pueblo people to break up and burn the images of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and other saints, to burn the temples, smash the bells, and separate from the wives the Christian church had given them.
Revitalization and Reconstruction
Between 1680 and 1692, despite the efforts of the Spanish to recapture the region, the Pueblo people rebuilt their kivas, revived their ceremonies and reconsecrated their shrines. People left their mission pueblos at Cochiti, Santo Domingo and Jemez and built new villages, such as Patokwa (established in 1860 and made up of Jemez, Apache/Navajos and Santo Domingo pueblo people), Kotyiti (1681, Cochiti, San Felipe and San Marcos pueblos), Boletsakwa (1680–1683, Jemez and Santo Domingo), Cerro Colorado (1689, Zia, Santa Ana, Santo Domingo) There were many others.
The architecture and settlement planning at these new villages was a new compact, dual-plaza form, a departure from the scattered layouts of mission villages. Liebmann and Pruecel have argued that this new format is what the builders considered a "traditional" village, based on clan moieties. Some potters worked on reviving traditional motifs on their glaze-ware ceramics, such as the doubled-headed key motif, which originated fro, 1400–1450.
New social identities were created, blurring the traditional linguistic-ethnic boundaries that defined Pueblo villages during the first eight decades of colonization. Inter-Pueblo trade and other ties between Pueblo people were established, such as new trade relationships between Jemez and Tewa people which became stronger during the revolt era than they had been in the 300 years before 1680.
Reconquest Attempts by the Spanish to reconquer the Rio Grande region began as early as 1681 when the former governor Otermin attempted to take back Santa Fe. Others included Pedro Romeros de Posada in 1688 and Domingo Jironza Petris de Cruzate in 1689—Cruzate's reconquest was particularly bloody, his group destroyed Zia pueblo, killing hundreds of residents. But the uneasy coalition of independent pueblos wasn't perfect: without a common enemy, the confederation broke into two factions: the Keres, Jemez, Taos and Pecos against the Tewa, Tanos, and Picuris.
The Spanish capitalized on the discord to make several reconquest attempts, and in August of 1692, the new governor of New Mexico Diego de Vargas, initiated his own reconquest, and this time was able to reach Santa Fe and on August 14 proclaimed the "Bloodless Reconquest of New Mexico." A second abortive revolt occurred in 1696, but after it failed, the Spanish remained in power until 1821 when Mexico declared independence from Spain.
Ysleta del Sur Pueblo
The Tribal community known as "Tigua" established Ysleta del Sur in 1682. After leaving the homelands of Quarai Pueblo due to drought, the Tigua sought refuge at Isleta Pueblo and were later captured by the Spanish during the 1680 Pueblo Revolt and forced to walk south for over 400 miles. The Tigua settled and built the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and, soon after, the acequia (canal) system that sustained a thriving agricultural-based community.

The previous year, I had lost the only boss/business owner I've ever worked under I've ever been truly proud to work under. He was an amazing man, he was a worker and he viewed his business as more of a community center than a money maker. Well, he had a platonic life partner that I was very close with. She died while I was addicted to fentanyl. But I didn't find out until I sobered up, and by then the funeral had already happened. I know she would have understood, but I still don't think I've forgiven myself for not being at that funeral.

There was a time when mainstream media tried to incorporate big YouTubers at the time into the fold and lately I’m seeing that more with streamers. What exactly caused this shift because I’ve noticed that streaming has also become what being a YouTuber once was where people see it as an accessible way to get rich and famous.
It is with great sadness that I am reporting that the AI mind virus has spread to my children's school, at least regarding visual graphics.
It used to be that whenever they were making a slideshow or putting up a flyer they would illustrate it with photos from the school, the children's drawings or simply a stock photo. How I long for those days. Now everything is smeared with AI slop, uncanny saccharine images of nasty little chubby cartoon children, schoolhouses with giant clocks and backgrounds composed of blobs of colour that the AI algorithm couldn't decide whether to turn into little hearts or little butterflies. All of it has been run though the obligatory AI piss filter, of course.
I fucking hate it.
Gunpla: after custom painting a kit from 2001, building a really expensive kit from 2024 with juat panel line and probably topcoat when its done is like a long vacation. dreaming about a browser/mobile game called FediForest, a Federated Virtual Pet RTS
You raise a critter in a browser/app virtual pet app. they eat, sleep, and you can train and teach them things. this plays like a tomagatchi, slow and incremental, check in once or twice a day and your critter will be happy.
The main game, however, is an RTS. When you start a "campaign", your critter is joined by 100 other critters from other players on the server. This is where the federation kicks in, because critters can be shared via activitypub with other servers.
The campaign starts with a build phase. No time limit, just gather resources around your base (you spawn on a randomized map) and build facilities. The critters come to you with various conditions based on their actual status on the server, so you must build cafeterias to feed the hungry ones, showers to clean the dirty ones, etc. You can also build defensive structures to protect your base, armories to upgrade your critters, etc.
When you're ready, you press a button to start a mission. You will either be defending (tower defense style) or raiding (pikmin style). Get resources from the enemy base, protect your own buildings, micro your army around enemy attacks, and try to avoid your critters getting KO'd (you have to foot the medical bill).
Every mission completed awards loot, and a loot multiplier builds up as you go deeper into a campaign, but your critters also develop fatigue the more they attack/take damage. Fatigue slows them down, and since losing is expensive you have to walk the line to get as much as possible while ending the campaign before disaster strikes. In between missions is another build phase, which is always no time limit like the first.
When a campaign ends, every critter that participated gets a "commendation" that their player can open in the incremental part of the game, giving them XP, training, etc based on the results of your campaign. There is no limit to the number of campaigns you can play, but each one starts with a fresh batch of 100 randomly selected critters from your federated server network and a fresh base building phase on a fresh map.
Critters are highly customizable. You can train/teach them to to four abilities during the incremental game, and every ability has an active and a passive version. Active abilities only apply to your critter, making them the keystone unit when you play, while your critter's passive abilities apply when they are a guest in someone else's game. When starting a campaign, players will get a hint as to what random elements they will be dealt, and can attempt to bias their random critter selection towards or away from certain passives.
Crucially the RTS element attempts to split the casual/hardcore divide by never forcing you to macro and micro at the same time. macro phases are always at your own place, and micro battles are meant to be tactical and tense rather than sprawling and confusing. The movement mechanics are deliberately "imperfect", drawing from old school movement algorithms from games like WC3 and SC:BW to give "textured" movement that allows for a lot of player skill expression.
Another cool idea I have is that every federated server can apply their own mods and content patches to the game for players on that server. Whether it's just a little MOTD on game start, balance tweaking, purely visual redesigns or gameplay overhauls adding new units and abilities, I want servers running the game to think of the rules as suggestions. Federation therefore has a lot of settings for admins to tweak, like determining what to import and what to block from federated servers, sensible defaults for when another server's mods tries to send over something unrecognized, etc.
I'm imagining the critters have these stats:
health armor strength armor penetration attack speed attack range movement speed turning speed
they start at a default of 50 each, and every ability/passive modifies them in some way. for example, the "fire shot" ability could shoot a single fireball in a straight line that damages the first enemy it hits, castable once per eight seconds. it increases your attack range and attack speed, but decrease your health and armor. when your critter is a guest, they keep the stat changes, but instead of the active ability they get the passive "fire resistance 5%".
so you can see how this encourages "builds" for critters. stack up damage and range at the cost of hp and armor for a glass cannon, range and movement/turning speed for a skirmisher, health and armor for a tank, etc. this also means that the "draft" phase before starting a campaign is a little tactical puzzle - if you want an army with a bias towards speed, then you can try to draft a combination of abilities that increase speed. It's a reward for game knowledge, but not strictly necessary to enjoy the game.
when a player gets their 100 guest critters at the start of a campaign, one of the first things they should probably do is sort them into control groups based on stats so that they can put the tanks in front of the shooters, keep the skirmishers running around, etc. the game should probably help them out a bit - instead of arriving in a big clump, the critters arrive pre-sorted into 10-20 critter groups with similar stats, a kind of "recommended formation" for new players. Skilled players will be able to get better sorting by looking at the passive abilities on the critters (they know that fire resistance is +range and +atkspd) and making groups themselves, but the players who don't want to think about it too much can of course just box-select everything and not even bother with control groups.
certain ability combinations can unlock a "synergy" on your critter. synergies are inherently role-changing - while every critter is assumed to be a straightforward dps unit by default, certain synergies will swap your attack out for a heal (SC:BW medic style), allow you to attack and move and the same time (vulture micro), turn your critter into a flying unit (muta micro), etc. This is how I get more varied "unit types" on the field - they are essentially highly specialized "classes" that a player opts their critter into by taking specific abilities. For visual clarity, it is important that each of these synergies has a clear visual indicator - right now I'm imagining that every critter starts off as a slime, but synergy abilities could manifest as unique customization options like bat wings, a unicorn horn, hooves, etc.

i've always heard that advanced degrees are only worthwhile if someone else is paying for it.
My recommendation for a master's degree is to try and get into PhD programs in the same direction. Most places will let OhD students exit with a Master's after two years and a little presentation on their project, identical to what a Master's student does. But PhD students in computer stuff get free tuition, health insurance, and they get paid (to teach or research part time).
Obviously verify that this is possible at a given department but if so it is a fantastic way to make money by getting a Master's. Though usually harder to get into.
In terms of career... maybe? I think it's probably useful as a way to force a qualification or career change if devops is your new direction and if it seems difficult to just self-teach devops while in a more general role.

Has anyone else heard of these kinds of "traffic buttons"? They seem rather dangerous for pedestrians, especially ones with mobility, hearing, or vision difficulties.
We want drivers to slow down and pay attention to the road so we're putting a big weird thing in the middle of an intersection without any signs or markings. The drivers will be paying attention to the road, saying, 'what the fuck is that on the road?' when they plow right into someone crossing at the crosswalk
Haven't seen that particular type before, so it's just a lifted center island but just with paint? Lazy, cheap, low maintenance. Roundabouts are better for drivers and worse for pedestrians when pedestrians need to navigate across the area shared with cars. It doubles the number of times a pedestrian needs to enter and cross a vehicle's path. 4 way "+" Intersections are a compromise for vehicle and pedestrian access with significant losses of safety for both. Head on and t bone collisions happen more this way, and things like unprotected left turns with pedestrians crossing simultaneously is a recipe for injury and fatality.
It looks like one of those things that tries to improve traffic safety without inconveniencing drivers in any way, which is of course impossible

Been thinking about military boot camp lately. The whole "break you down and build you up" thing isn't how you train somebody to be good at something, it's how you indoctrinate someone into a cult. I guess that's intentional, but there's gotta be a more rational way to do it.
We know how to get people to do things in difficult circumstances. If you want someone to be able to shoot their gun at the little speck in the distance while being shot at, you train them to shoot at little specks for hours and hours until they can do it without thinking about it. You could apply the same principle to using heavy weapons, talking on the radio, whatever else a troop needs to do.
You don't need cult shit to build espirit de corps, you just need a bunch of people working and living together. Training sucks even without all of the humiliation rituals and hazing, so they'll bond over it naturally. And there's no shortage of other ways you can build a sense of comraderie by making sure that everyone understands the mission and why it's important.
I guess to an extent the military I imagine is impossible in an imperialist society. You need to indoctrinate people to a greater degree when you're making them routinely go off and kill others unprovoked in a way that you don't when what they're doing is defending themselves and their neighbors.

They want the US foreign and domestic policy to focus on protectionism and a lot of their culture war stuff is pro-environmental pollution and anti-immigration (as in, they want to keep migrant workers more precarious).
DemonKKKrats are aligned international finance capital. All of the small business owners and domestic industrialists get disciplined by them as they seek to maximize short term profit over long term infrastructure. Essentially capitalism sabotaging its ability to reproduce itself through making it all fake, a superior method of profit maximization. The writers of some Mainer seaside lobster boatsman’s paper called The Atlantic are a result of the confidence that comes from being able to literally make money.

Why do ISPs block email ports? Who's stupid idea was that? If you're worried about spam just throttle it or something jfc i should not have to jump through this many hoops to be able to use my own domain name for email
Yeah it is very annoying. I used to use vultr as an outbound smarthost and inbound spam filter but now they block port 25 too so I cancelled that. womp womp
edit: I just found out that they'll unblock it, maybe I'll reprovision it!
