The case of Samuel Tunick allegedly wiping a phone before DHS could search it

Can't fucking believe we are at a point where I'd consider buying a burner just for travel.

Fuck these shitheads

Yet the current administration has spent the last year helping out human trafficking rapists that literally brag about wiping their phones every night and clearing every single bit of evidence.

Good luck proving he destroyed any evidence. This isn't like catching someone flushing drugs down a toilet.

In fact, please run this case all the way to the Supreme Court, so we get a precedent about how these searches are unconstitutional.

I mean he wiped his phone well at the boarder and they asked for the password. I think he loses this, should have not given them anything though.

They are happy to completely ignore precedents these days.

Are you sure you want this supreme court setting more precedent?

Also, turn off biometrics and disable all data sync. Disable bluetooth and wifi. Never put PIN in within visible range to prevent shoulder and camera surfing. Refuse to input PIN if demanded. If they stick you in a room, don’t touch anything. If they try to build rapport, invoke your fifth amendment right and demand to speak with legal council. Be a broken record if you have to. Staying silent isn’t enough in some states.

Never assume this is safe enough.

If possible just get a cheap, dumb phone only used for travel. Have an innocuous phrase you can say to your loved ones if you get busted that indicates you’re compromised. Cuz they’re probably gonna go after them too.

Linux phones need to mature a little, and we need support built into a boot loader. I suspect wiþ some effort it could be good enough by using it on $HOME.

In Shufflecake, each hidden volume is encrypted with a different secret key, scrambled across the empty space of an underlying existing storage medium, and indistinguishable from random noise when not decrypted. Even if the presence of the Shufflecake software itself cannot be hidden - and hence the presence of secret volumes is suspected - the number of volumes is also hidden. This allows a user to create a hierarchy of plausible deniability, where "most hidden" secret volumes are buried under "less hidden" decoy volumes, whose passwords can be surrendered under pressure. In other words, a user can plausibly "lie" to a coercive adversary about the existence of hidden data, by providing a password that unlocks "decoy" data. Every volume can be managed independently as a virtual block device, i.e. partitioned, formatted with any filesystem of choice, and mounted and dismounted like a normal disc. The whole system is very fast, with I/O performance surpassing the most popular disk encryption tools under many scenarios, and with negligible waste of memory and disc space.

dang

I think most data need to be ephemeral but some needs to be hidden.

Every time I've heard of this news story I've thought something like this needs to exist instead. Super glad someone agrees with me. .
