MemesI quit my first real job on 9/11. I watched the buildings go down, walked into the deli I hated working at and said, "life is too short." Which for an 18 year old me was a pretty big move.

What? It's not unreasonable to say he may have missed some key moments in history.
The first 3 are American, I could see a foreigner not knowing. My sister is a teacher in Europe and she says none of her students knew about the Holocaust. These are teenagers. I think maybe we might be fucked as a species.

It is more that the rich ensured that education focused primarily on the aesthetic horrors of fascism rather than its material origin. The impetus for bonapartist tendencies was never removed so it eventually returned as conditions necessitated. They rich could not admit it was the system they uphold and benefit from that gave rise to fascism without endangering their positions and implicating themselves.
Or he just didn’t pay attention in class when it was taught. A lot of students treat history as irrelevant. It doesn’t help that a lot of public school history teachers are the equivalent of a dad watching World War 2 documentaries. Lots of them basically teach history so they can be a coach instead. Because public schools don’t hire independent coaches, and require all of them to teach something. So the coaches tend to fall into teaching history, because it’s easier than learning to teach calculus or chemistry.
Ooh can confirm: Our coach taught us that nazi germany was communists and north korea killed more people than any civilization in history.

He doesn’t look that young. I can’t imagine somehow missing the post 9/11 fallout and the war in the Middle East. The 20 year anniversary of it wasn’t as extravagant as the 10 year. But as an American it was kinda hard to ignore.
If he’s from outside the us and like just turned 18 maybe. But like how does one even miss all of the memes about it? I guess even those have died down too.

Eh, 9/11 was ~25 years ago. And if we assume that a child under the age of, say, 5 wouldn't be interested in such things and wouldn't be exposed to it much, especially if not in the US ... then someone could feasibly be up to 30 years old right now and have been too young to notice or care when 9/11 happened.
And I don't know about your age standards ... but this guy looks like he could easily be under 30.
I’m very squarely in that age bracket and it was hard to ignore 9/11 if you were at all exposed to any media. I can’t imagine anyone 25-30 managing to entirely ignore 9/11 even without teachers talking about it. Maybe someone with the absolute peak of sheltering could ignore it. But outside of that I can’t imagine anyone in the US 25-30 having no clue.

I'd say they made the attempt, but if he didn't listen that much, the problem is them passing him, not attempting to teach him.
that is definitely a problem of the US education system. The "no child left behind" policy is absolute garbage.
History teachers in grade school seem to be either great or terrible. Nothing in between.
I can see someone born around then or after not understanding the scope of the event. I can think of things that happened when I was born or just a kid where even knowing about it later it just seems like something in a book. You can't know what a world was like before an event if you weren't aware of it.
How he escaped ever seeing more about it online is another thing, but then again I see lots of reaction videos, many that are probably legit, of people who never heard or saw things, even if they've heard references to it. It's yet another XKCD Ten Thousand moment.
On a wide side note, I had an amazing Ancient History instructor in college. First day he told us not to bother getting the text for the class, we're not using it. He took us on an incredible ride.

On the drive between my house and the nearest significant town, there's a house which has a small replica of the twin towers on their front lawn. One is labeled "never" and the other "forget." They're set at an angle from the road so you see first one, then the other. The first few times I drove up here I forgot (perhaps ironically) that they were there and thus was surprised to see the twin towers with "never" written on them.
In the opposite direction is a house on the intersection of three roads. I think the owner sells snowmobiles. In his front yard is a shipping container with snowmobiles in it. Atop the container sits a life sized Trump mannequin on a snowmobile giving a thumbs up to the main road. On the container "LAW + ORDER = :)" is spraypainted. Across the yard is a shed with "WAKE UP!" spraypainted on it.
The former, fine. The latter - no matter your politics, and I'm certainly not intentionality expressing mine here - seems a bit excessive.

When I was in schools, American history was Pilgrims, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, The Great Depression, and WWI. Then it was summer. We might have a school assembly in February to talk about MLK.
If you were to ask my teachers, American history goes revolutionary war, then nothing happens for awhile, then the civil war, then nothing happens for awhile, then WW1 had to happen so that we could have ourselves a WORLD WAR TWO! The four years that make up 9/10ths of American history. And then the Japanese signed the surrender on the deck of the USS Missouri and then stuff I-the boomer history teacher-personally remember so it legally can't be history.
It's so great that the US single handedly won the only war that ever happened in Asia. Good thing there hasn't been any major conflict on that side of the world since then.
It's kinda clear how the curriculum was designed, after all according to this class Japan was only discovered in 1939. Russia pops in an out of existence, Korea and Vietnam are fictional and Africa is where Egypt is.
Yep. And with each successively later era in history being more and more rushed because the history teacher was always behind schedule and the big standardized tests at the end of the year ate up a lot of time.
And then next year, in the next history class, you start over at Pilgrims again! Only difference is that now there's a little bit more detail and you're expected to write an essay about it instead of just answering some multiple choice questions.
Did you finish school prior to 2001? Cuz, I mean, that's everything I learned in school too at that time.
But my daughter is 13 now, and I can confirm that she has been formerly told about 9/11. I don't think with as much detail as she will learn in her during her high school tenure, but she at least knows about it.

Well, I was in the third grade when 9/11 happened, and there was never any kind of formal education about it, because we had all experienced. Kids a just a few years younger than me would t remember it at all, but likely still wouldn't have learned about it in school yet. That's probably where this guy falls
I had to do a bunch of my own learning about the gulf war. Similarly, it happened before I was born but recent enough that history teachers didn't consider it history. I now think it set the stage for a lot of the US geopolitically and I really should've learned about it in school.
The equivalent would be someone in 2001 not knowing something that happened in 1976.
