Heroic is singlehandedly the best tool I've had for getting seemingly any Windows game to work as needed. I don't know what they do differently than Bottles or Lutris under the hood but good lord the "just works" aspects of it are glorious.
Janky old DX8 title? Bam, now it runs in Vulkan with proper API extensions and directinlut wrappers. Got a weird, 16-bit Windows 3.1 title? Look at that, it works too. The only seeming exceptions are where there legitimately just isn't support yet via Proton or DXVK and that's an ever narrowing gap

Also TIL the original developer still sells boxed copies of this thing. That's crazy. It also seems like they've updated fhe binaries for 32-bit systems so it should run under modern Windows.

That's exactly what I've been asking for. I like the gog model of no DRM, but being able to play on my OS of choice is more important to me, so I usually buy from steam. I know most gog games can run on Linux with manual setup, but most of the time I'm in the mood for gaming I don't want to troubleshoot, I most likely did that all day at work already. The game is the unwind from all that. When this lands I will use it to buy a new game from them, if not just for testing purposes.
In the interim, Heroic Launcher is a viable alternative on Linux, since it's got integration with GOG and a wine/proton manager built in. So it'll automatically download the game and set up the prefix. It also does the same for Epic, but who give a shit about them.
yeah Heroic is how I play my GOG games on Linux, and also the Epic freebies I've picked up.
Actually as a game launcher, I prefer Heroic to Steam - if only because of the instant start-up.
I'm kind of bored of Steam and its 60-second start-up time. Most of it is Steam waiting for network connectivity so it can confirm your account validity and connecting to Friends servers, which Heroic doesn't have to worry about.
I haven't found a GOG client for Linux that's as easy as Steam. They all require some kind of fiddling. Some games that should work, just don't. I don't bother with those and I just pretend they don't exist. I play those that just work out of the box. I've tried Lutris, Heroic and Faugus.
To be fair, that's just GoG's problem itself. GoG refuses, for some reason, to require developers to ship version-agnostic versions of their game so half the games are stuck in time with library requirements from a decade ago it expects your system to provide. Which it doesn't. And because these are third-party installers and not from the package manager they can't request the package manager to install the library versions they need. And even if they could most distros explicitly will not allow that given the security risk of using outdated libraries.
This could be solved by breaking the linux philosophy and just require the older insecure libraries to be included with the games; which is the most accurate to their mission statement of preserving and archiving old games, but that requires people on their technical teams, their publisher liaison teams, and probably their legal teams all to understand linux well enough to have that as a hard requirement with minimal to no legal liabilities.
We already have AppImages or Flatpaks if they wanted to go that route.
AppImages would probably be the better solution in this case.
App images make modding much harder depending on the app, and flatpaks practically remove that as an option.

It’s just a shame how prevalent that kind of behaviour is. It’s to the point where you pretty much have to scour the backgrounds of all the businesses you buy from to see if they’re hateful/extremist. Like they always have something to hide.

I personally (I know I'm the one who started this chain) didn't have too much of an opinion on the trans stuff as I'm not in that space at all, so kind of defaulted to that community's opinion. Not great, company had room to improve.
They're kind of full of the corporate non-apologies and didn't handle it the greatest. Everything after was them trying to save face I think. To their credit they did ultimately fire the responsible party. And if it was just that I might have left it thinking they screwed up, hopefully they learn.
But then GoG did their Nazi thing and I'm thinking if I keep smelling smoke there's a fire ya know?
