A new, young PC technician was hired and from the get go he was practically blowing himself with claims he'll be promoted quickly, he could do the job of 2 people, nobody works harder than him. Less than 2 months into the job someone calls the dept asking where he is because he was supposed to swap out a PC for a director at an off-site location. His manager called his cell and asked where he was. He told em he was just finishing up Cathy's PC and he'll be back on site.

Manager: "Cathy just called me asking why you haven't shown up yet. So I'll ask again...where the hell are you?"

Turns out he was hung-the-fuck-over and napping at home. He got canned very quickly.

The people that scream the loudest about being hard working or intelligent usually aren't. If someone is good at something, they don't need to point it out.

One factory job had a couple days of orientation in a classroom before we started on the floor, but on day one we ended with a tour of the work areas. As we went around, someone working recognized one of the others in my group as a local methhead/rampant thief. We found out that's why he didn't come back when we started working with the others.

This guy was only a "new co-worker" because I was the new employee, but: my first day on a new job I watched a guy get escorted out of the building by security carrying his shit in a cardboard box. His story ended up on the local news. Turned out he was running a prostitution ring from his office, using his work computer even. He had an 800 number that redirected to his office phone, and he kept track of his girls and customers on an Excel spreadsheet on his Windows desktop. The only reason he got caught was that the company upgraded everybody's computers, and they had techs check through all the old machines to make sure no important documents got deleted, and they found "CallGirls.xls" or something like that right on his desktop. Security through dumbassery.

As an employee of more years than I care to count, I can safely say the missing component here is "training". I know this because I am going through that right now (for at least the 20th time in my life).

Why I just leaned that you are NOT supposed to take assets from the company. Amazing knowledge to gain after all these years! They even added that "taking assets" even extends to "taking cash". Well, I'll say; I've never felt more informed in all my life!

How the heck did I make it this far in life without "knowing" that kind of information? Because everyone knows that employees don't know anything (or have any morals) until HR tells it to them. /s

Stories like this piss me off because they convice me that i would be an absolutely incredible criminal; did this dude not know about usb-sticks?

did this dude not know about usb-sticks?

Even before that, dude didn't even try to make it look plausibly legitimate so it didn't invite suspicion for when someone inevitably stumbled on the file.

Dude was definitely never a kid with only shared access to a computer, that's for sure...

Could have named it GroceryList.xls and would probably still be working there 😂

Or BusinessAssets.xlsxxx /s

Any mid to large size company has the USB ports of their desktop PCs disabled, disconnected or even glued shut. At least the ones that take security seriously.

I can't imagine doing my job with a computer like that. I need to be able to plug in scanners and label printers and other specialty equipment and swap out peripherals as they break like how would that even work?

Normally those are pre-approved by IT and you wouldn't be the one swapping those out. You would put in a request saying hey this item is broken can you please troubleshoot it and somebody would come out troubleshoot it and swap it out as needed.

A newly onboarded guy told everyone over lunch that the next day was going to be a bank holiday where he is from, so he won't come in to work. We told him that it's not a bank holiday around here. He became quite upset about this. Then the line manager got wind of that.
He didn't turn up the next day... or on any day after that.

In my story, he was not really fired. But a new hire in my company was handed his computer. Seeing it was on Windows, he asked to work on Linux instead. IT told him that Windows was mandatory so he resigned on the spot.

Based af, but he didn't even enjoy the burrito he ordered for lunch :(

average lemmy user lol

I mean seriously what an idiotic thing to resign over. Almost every single court environment is Windows only. Most of them very rarely have Linux exceptions. Some of them might have an Apple exception but usually that's only for executives. I mean unless he was a dab or something like that in which case it's a little bit more acceptable. But not by much.

There's a famous story at my job about this.

The hiring team kept saying they had trouble finding designers and developers because nobody wants to work on a Windows computer.

And the owner went. "So why are we forcing everyone to use windows?"

And then one department pointed fingers at another, to another, to another. Apparently a decade ago, some IT dude got Microsoft kickbacks and left the company. The next month, the whole "Microsoft" rule faded away and now my department is running Linux laptops, the designers and devs have their macs, and the accountants are using windows.

Yeah, the guy in my story was to be a developer as well. Clearly it's way more confortable to work on Linux. The justification in my company is that the security protocols are already built for Windows so they don't want to redo the job on Linux. Handling to OS' would increase their work load.

That's a first round interview question for me

Same. I am the only Linux person at my employer lol

I wish I had the half the resolve of that man. I had the choice between two evils, windows and mac, which resulted in me getting a mac, mostly out of curiosity. I hate it

I also use a mac at work after being offered a choice between that and Windows. I hate it. But the MacBook Pro they provide is objectively more powerful than the HP windows laptops they provide, so here I am.

I switched to Mac about 15 years ago because I started writing iOS apps and you can only do that on a Mac. As a lifelong Windows user I was initially pretty dubious, but I soon came around. Now I hate MacOS and Windows equally.

and you can only do that on a Mac

Why is that?

To sell more Macs

I was hoping for a technical explanation.
I can cross-compile on Linux to Windows.
Why must i develop for Mac on a Mac?

You can develop the app (as in write the code) on any platform but Apple made it so iOS apps can only be compiled from Apple devices. There's no particular technical reason I'm aware of just they've designed their proprietary compiler that way and haven't released it cross platform.

Apple being Apple

Windows and Apple both desire 100% control over their ecosystems l, including custom tooling and languages that may not exist elsewhere.

Reliance on other people's stuffeans less reliance on the OS provider. Hence why they have competing, well everything.

That's laughable. Windows does not demand 100% control over their system. Windows is a you think you can do it let's see you go ahead and do it and fuck shit up. And when you do fuck it up you'll have a much more difficult time fixing it. On Linux it's a yeah go ahead fuck shit up Good luck here's a log should be easy to fix it but you got to make it work in the first place. On a Mac it's you'll get it from this space install it in this way or you won't use it at all.

Cool story.

Either way I'm really happy for you that you manage to fuck up every operating system, proprietary or not. Quite the achievement.

When I joined up at my current job, they asked whether I wanted a Linux or Mac laptop. I, of course, took the Linux laptop. The recruiter laughed and said "no one ever picks Mac."

Now Macs are the only option because the IT department doesn't want to run any tool other than JAMF.

What boggles my mind is one of the execs who was there long before I was. He selected a Mac, then used Parallels to run Windows on it.

I don't mind using a Mac at work. It's just a BSD with a proprietary UI; it's close enough if that's the choice IT gives me.

I thought that's how it would be too, but I've got to admit that the UI gets on my nerves much more than I expected.

Valid point, I feel the same. The whole concept of hiding UI elements for a better look, the weird upper bar and the shitty multimonitor support drive me insane.

It's still miles better than Windows and a lot worse than Linux with KDE. But to be fair, there are paid apps for changing the UI quite a lot. There's even one that gives you a Windows-like taskbar on a Mac.

Not asking about your workplace and tools during the interview is equally wild

Absolutely. If you're so strict about this, you should definitely ask.

Sounds like a man who has never been so disgusted in his life.

Not the same day, but it reminded me of this:

https://dutchreview.com/news/dutch-court-awards-man-34k-for-unfair-dismissal/

I would have fired him as well. Even if I had to pay him out. If he refuses to shake hands with anyone that would be an entire different matter, but the don’t touch women rule some Muslims adhere to is rooted in sexism and misogyny.

You can't have "my body my choice" for some things and not others. The law/principle is applied universely, everyone has a right to deny touch or any other action to any part of their body from any other individual/group.

So if a white person doesn’t want to shake the hands of a Black person they shouldn’t be fired for discrimination?

Why does it sounds right but feels wrong?

If it was a white Christian who doesn’t want to shake the hands of a Muslim nobody here would defend the Christian.

Regardless of prejudices towards the perpetrator, I understand and agree with the idea of "my body, my rules". Yet, I feel like choosing not to shake hand of a specific group based on discrimination is wrong. Am I a hypocrite or am missing something?

You're not a hypocrite. It seems like a different version of the paradox of tolerance. Think of it more like a social contract. They broke it first so you aren't obligated to follow the rules when they don't.

If a Muslim doesn't want to shake hands with a woman then that's fine but it also means you can't work in jobs where you need to do that. Don't push your beliefs on other people. Just because you believe something doesn't mean the rest of the world needs to bend. We just need to respect your space to do it, or not do it.

If I couldn't drink alcohol for religious reason, it wouldn't be discrimination no one wanted to hire me as a wine sommelier.

If someone doesn’t want to shake hands fine but they should apply that rule to everyone equally regardless of race, gender and religion. Otherwise it’s discrimination no matter the reason, religion is no excuse to discriminate. Especially in a professional business environment.

It sounds like the court just didn't like the reason given for the firing. I'm guessing if they talked to their corporate lawyer first, and fired him for workplace discrimination, that would have been an entirely different court discussion.

But firing him for performance after 3 days on the job? That's an obvious lie.

I know someone who got his dream job in Brazil. His plane landed and he asked his local host where he can get some halal lunch. He was told that there didn't seem to be any halal food options in the city that's the host knew of. Guy got on a same day flight and flew back home. This was 20 years ago.

dream job in Brazil
he asked his local host where he can get some halal lunch
20 years ago Was his dream job destroying a Democratic Nation?

My uni has places selling halal food nearby, but they're expensive so I just eat vegan.

Left the dream job? Bro, just cook at home. Damn.

If they're eating halal for reasons they dont seek to change (religious or otherwise) it can be extremely difficult to "cook at home" because you need to secure halal food sources, which if there aren't even any restaurants with halal food, it may be extremely difficult to secure halal ingredients

Fish, seafood, fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, legumes like rice, wheat, beans, and lentils ... all default halal, no?

Seafood (other than fish) may or may not be halal depending on the school of Islam. The others should be fine.

No. Halal is basically Kosher for Muslims. So much so that my Muslim friends are perfectly happy getting lunch at the local kosher deli. The animals must be butchered a very specific way, and overseen by a Jewish or Muslim authority to be kosher or halal respectively.

I think that seafood is basically the same as with Kosher... so you can only eat things from the sea that have both fins and scales. Or is it gills and scales?

I worked with a Muslim in Amsterdam who ordered vegetarian because he was pretty sure it would be Halal. That was 20 years ago, so maybe he'd have an easier time eating non-vegetarian now? I see lots of Halal signs in restaurant windows, but who knows?

Yes, plant-based foods can be halal, and in many cases, they are by default. Fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and legumes are all naturally halal as long as they are not processed or prepared with haram substances. [...] If these foods are handled, flavoured, or packaged with non-halal ingredients such as alcohol, gelatine, or animal-derived enzymes, they may no longer be considered halal.

I don't know how reputable Halalification is, but it was high on the list of search results and the entire answer seems well-reasoned.

I have no idea. Wikipedia says

Made, produced, manufactured, processed, and stored using machinery, equipment, and/or utensils that have been cleaned according to Islamic law (shariah).

i don't know enough about Islamic law to say whether or not are default halal. They could be. I dunno!

Its not just cooking style, it starts with how the animal is butchered IIRC

If I got my dream job and it required me to be a pescatarian, vegetarian, or vegan: my diet would change immediately.

I get liking meat but damn.

If your job asked you to eat dog would you do it?

Because thas what your asking.

Halal isn't a preference, its a standard for how meat is killed and prepared all the way to your food to your plate.

I think you got the post you're replying to completely backwards.

They're saying in that man's shoes, they'd adopt a diet like pescetarianism or become vegan, which would allow them to practice halal even without needing dedicated halal meat sources.

The point is not to eat meat at all. Then it's halal anyways.

That's a very poor strawman analogy.

A better analogy is, if your dream job said you could no longer eat steak or chicken, would you do it? If your dream job required you to eat a vegan or vegetarian diet, would you?

OP wasn't suggesting that the person eat non-halal meat, they were suggesting they just don't eat meat.

Yeah i missed that, but that's still a huge ask of people, and they have the privilege of being able to do that....

The privilege of being vegetarian or vegan would probably increase the health of our society quite a bit, as well as our environment if everyone adopted that standard.

Either way: if I'm getting my dream job out of it I'll go full vegan gluten free hard mode yo.

There's a simple way to sidestep that issue

Give up your morals?

I think they meant going vegan?

Eat a vegan diet, it's halal

What city would that be? In São Paulo there's plenty of halal restaurants, in Rio there's a couple. In other parts of the country could be more difficult.

Were those halal options operating 20 years ago? Because this is an old story, and the guy really couldn't wait that long for lunch.

In São Paulo, for sure. In Rio maybe harder.

Well beyond that, kosher is halal. Was there not a deli anywhere in the city?

I used to work in a large fishing ship as an engineer, there I became an atheist. Once there was a huge storm and we had to balance the ship to make sure it wouldnt roll, the guy who had to do it was praying and didnt have time to balance it, we almost died because he had mandatory pray time. From than we had a rule that there is no religion on the ship, once we come back to land than you can believe.

There's a great scene in Das Boot where the crew ends up trapped on the bottom of the Straight of Gibraltar. One guy starts fingering his rosary beads and praying and another guy punches him in the face and says "cut that shit out, we've got work to do!"

From what I hear of Islam on e.g. fasting it tends to be quite a practical religion. I'd not be surprised if that guy could in fact have not been praying at that moment and still stuck to all the teachings of his religion.

There's a literal exception for when travelling

Yeah this is not at all how praying works in Islam. Of course you don't pray if you're practically unable to do so safely.

It is also considered a sin if you choose to fast under circumstances that put your health in danger.

Apparently (I'm not a scholar but was curious) in dire situations that require immediate action they could've prayed while helping out, even shortening it out as long as the short (verbal?) prayer is done in honesty and the situation absolutely demands it. Apparently it's even outright disallowed to not safe yourself or others during life-and-death situations even if it prevents you from the mandatory prayer because preserving people's lifes and your own tops those rules, at least that's what I read so far. If that boat story is actually true that person probably was a dipshit who happened to break his own religion's rules.

Also looked up fasting: There seems to be even more leeway on that. Just do it later if you can't do it right now due to illness or similar, or pay "fidyah" (give poor people money for food). Though I'm kinda curious how it's handled when someone is too old to fast but also poor as fuck, not a situation where you'd want to also feel guilty about this.

Young, expectant, illness, or age are all specifically exempt from fasting. At least that is how it works for the Baha'is, and they are to Islam as Christianity is to Judaism, so I assume they copied the rest of the fasting rules verbatim. I do know that the Muslims fast from sunup to sundown same as Baha'i

Same as every religion, there are extremists and ignorants, like all the christians ignoring the bible and the 10 commandments while pretending that the current president of the US was handpicked by their god to save them.

Or maybe the person thought "We're already beyond fucked, might as well die a pious death while praying, bet that will get me into the A list", or some variation of that.

There are different disciplines in that religion

Sure. I'm skeptical that any of those disciplines except perhaps extremely minor, strict ones teach that you have to continue praying, in your knees, in an emergency.

From speaking with Muslims during Ramadan, if there's a bona fide emergency that takes priority over prayer no questions asked. Anyone who says otherwise is an extremist or wrong.

The sea is your only god here

"You disrespected the Gods for the last time, Kratos"

Narrator: It wasn't the last time.

Worked in a lab where this lady sat down to read some SOPs and within an hour said "I'm not feeling it" and quit in that moment.

Much respect for that!

I've done a few jobs where people didn't turn up for their second day, but never anything like that

I used to work nights at a factory and I remember one time we watched the expected new employee walk in the door, clock in, then immediately walk back out. Never saw them again.

And then everybody clapped.

That's the sort of story that serves as a lesson, like one of those fairy tales about respecting weird little guys in the woods

Anybody who saw that happen and didn't stop the firing absolutely deserved it.

If your company is run by someone who fires people openly in front of others, that's a red flag.

Even my absolute worst boss, who had a horrible temper, would rarely fire someone on the floor in front of coworkers. And that man was a walking red flag who got fired after about a year in his position, when his bosses finally found out how he treated his employees.

I assume that the company mentioned here didn't have a proper HR representative who knew and understood the law about religious discrimination.

Can confirm this.

My first job had a manager who loved "making examples out of people". One time, he threatened to fire a girl because she didn't organize something the way he wanted, and went on a speech about how he is to be respected and when the girl told the owner, they hired a second manager to potentially remove him.

He later went to jail for stabbing a guy at a bar, probably drunk. So he removed himself. He then became a cop. So that's cool.

Most responsible business owners understand the cost of hiring new employees, so they want to keep productive employees for as long as possible. And if middle managers are mistreating employees, a good business owner will do something about it.

Not to say that all business owners are good. Having worked for good and bad people, I can say that leaving a business with bad ownership is always a good thing in the long run, even if it hurts in the short term.

O_O

i'll be damned, prayer does work

In what way is asking for a place where they can pray imposing their religion on others? It's a reasonable accommodation in the same way that not working on the sabbath would be.

Fuck muslims with a necrotic pork penis.

Frankly, it sounds like you've got your own issues with bigotry to get over. Maybe look in the mirror before projecting your problems onto others.

Tell that to the Christians. I've never been harassed by Muslims trying to convert me. The asshole hateful Christians come to my door, and don't just leave their bullshit at their homes.

I'm not trying to defend Christian evangelism here because it's annoying and harmful but I do have experience with Muslim friends attempting to convert me. More than a few actually. Certainly not as many or as often or as persistently as Christians and LDS and JWs but substantially more than never. I have no issues with most religion, but I do have a problem with evangelism. It's just advertising by another name. Waiting for evangelismblock plus to go with my adblock plus.

Fair enough, I just haven't run into it. I don't even find the Hare Krishna's, or Galung Fong at the airport annoying. They just ask for a donation. They don't proselytize.

Ok, necrotic pork penes for all!

I guess some prayers get answered.

Allah doesn’t mess about.

This is truly a pathetic country.

We don't know this was in America, there are so many pathetic countries to choose from!

We don’t know this was in America,

Where else can you both fire someone on the spot and sue for religious discrimination?

Canada, if it's day one. There's a 3 month probation period where the requirements before you can fire someone are non-existent, though you still can't fire someone for illegal reasons.

How do you know the person you responded to was referring to America? there are so many pathetic countries to choose from!

I saw pathetic and my brain just filled in "American"

When Nazi Germany was in power, people probably thought a lot about Germany as the default.

Godwin's law needs to be revised for Trump after this shit's over.

"This us truly an American country."

Because they assumed it was a specific country based on nothing, that's something I've only seen Americans do. I mean the spirit is there, don't get me wrong.

You assumed him assuming? :D
