I got a WD Red from Amazon (Marketplace) that looked exactly like a legit one, though kinda scratched up. I was only able to tell because I tried running a SMART test and it didn't even fail, it just didn't work. I got dubious, so I tried to register the product on Western Digital website and it lacked the necessary code on the label. I then contacted WD and confirmed it was fake, thankfully I could return it and get money back.
I think the term soft drive would be more applicable here.
Probably more reliable than the real drive, every drive I've ever had a problem with has been WD.

So out of curiosity, I did what you suggested but I'm unclear about the outcome. Looks like the drive is shit as it already crashed on me.

I'm really curious what's inside the case. OP does it feel as heavy as a 16TB HDD? I'm curious if there's just a tiny little SD card soldered inside this thing.

Why though? On the hope it’s an actual WD? But what purpose would that serve as most likely something has been messed with to make it cheaper. Or maybe from the same WD manufacturing line?
Curiosity, mostly. And yes, it could be a "factory second" labeled for local sale.
A SMART report would be interesting too. Perhaps it's a relabeled old drive.
@stumu415@lemmy.zip Actually, thinking about this a little more, it's possible that you have a used data center drive which was pulled due to test failure. Data center drives get replaced all the time when they show any minor signs of failure, or sometimes just because they reach a certain number of operating hours, even if there's no issue. If the capacity checks out, and SMART shows minor issues or just long operating hours, this might be an entirely usable drive (in an array with some redundancy).

there are programs to check if the capacity is real. these are usually made to identify faked usb flash drives but it can probably be used here too

Sometimes it takes it a while for the delete to federate to other instances, I assume.
I don´t think that's correct. I've replied to comments after they've been shown as deleted.
I kind of like it better than reddit's "don't spend too much time writing a reply to a comment because it might have been deleted by the time you hit send and then you have nowhere to post it"
