In short, think of those communities as a box of matches. In the right hands they’re perfectly safe and useful.
In the hands of a petulant child or batshit crazy adult, they’re dangerous and highly flammable.
Given that the average level of maturity of the loudest people here falls somewhere between “petulant child” and “batshit crazy adult”, giving them a box of matches is a very. bad. idea.
Some of those communities are also completely unmoderated.

When I ran vegan theory club instance I said something he didn't like and he want ballistic on me calling me out for being anti-American and "extremist" while the country he lives in was preparing to bomb the country where I'm from. He then went on to the fediseer and censured my instance because if he doesn't like something it is a problem. This is an actual problem with the fediverse, the "call outs" and harassment communities that pick out people for wrong think.
"Extremism" only means to oppose the status quo.
These people are actual extremists for liberalism. Any violence they employ is fine because it preserves the status quo, thus fighting the "extremism" of people suggesting that violence with a much smaller scope and scale should be employed to overthrow their hegemony.
Like tankie, the use of the word "extremism" only exists to slander those who dare oppose the status quo in any meaningful way.

To be blunt: Tesseract is designed to attract and retain normies. The Fediverse is stuck in a bit of a chicken and egg situation right now. It needs new people, but anyone in their right mind isn’t going to want to stick around because the loudest bunch here are just so off-putting to normal, well-adjusted people. I’ve attempted to resolve this catch-22 situation and am trying, perhaps hamfistedly, to save the Fediverse from itself.
I gotta ask who these mysterious level headed normies who'd be driven away by the fediverse community are given some of the things that list blocks. Like, for example one of the blocked communities is called "Wholesome Yuri". Who's being scared away by lesbians? and why would they be a better, less toxic community than the fediverse's existing one?

That's what it was doing, basically. It was quietly making API calls to retrieve its secret censor list from a server its dev had. It went undetected until someone (db0?) went poking around and mimicked those API calls to get a copy of what exactly it was retrieving.
Nope it was doing both. There were multiple types of block lists in the source code and then there was and additional API call to get even more up to date user block lists. Since the API call was to a block list he personally maintained it's just hard coding with more steps.
I mean technically.they hardcoded a slur filter (ofc there's nothing wrong with a grievance against slurs but just saying)
The slur filter hasn't been hard-coded in years. They made it so admins define a list of slur regexes through the UI instead.

I still think there's a pattern there that deserves a deep dive because it happens too often to just be handwaved away as misinterpreted.
Imo it's mostly down to material conditions. Star Trek's heyday was pre-2000. Trek fans are nerd types, many nerd types at the time got high-paying jobs in the tech or engineering sectors. People who are "doing well" generally tend to have petite-bourgeois politics due to a variety of things, but in particular investments and home ownership. See the modern "tech bro" who is usually some type of libertarian.
Further, those sectors often have ties to weapons manufacturers and the like. The people who design missiles at Raytheon are going to be imperialist dogs and a good number of them are going to be trekkies.

Well if you ask me, i've heard it be described as "wagon trains to the stars" by someone on the production staff, meaning it has manifest destiny baked into it. There are colonists in every series and sometimes they drive the plot. The Borg are the ever present threat to the federation because of the oft mentioned horror of loosing individuality to a collective and deep space nine's main character is a war criminal who pursues a separatist on a personal vendetta because he betrayed his uniform (maquis being abandoned to fascist occupation only to be beaten back when they resist by by cardassia and earth but the maquis are still just terrorizdz who chose violence).
Then there's the audience, there's a video out there comparing NATO and Soviet weapons which is just that in a title over a video of major kira comparing federation phaser rifles to cardassian phase-disruptors and honestly they're not wrong. There's Lazerpig, who made a video essay about the defiant class and it's connection to the us army. He demonstrated impressive knowledge of the show in the same video that used the phrase "go america" twice. Those sorts of things gain a lot of engagement that a show that is deliberately and consciously socialist probably shouldn't have.

There's a huge difference between that and just having a common goal of the well-being and progress of all community members.
I haven't watched DS9 since it's original run & I was too immature at the time to understand all the political undertones and complexities. I've wanted to watch it again, but I hate watching stuff alone & my spouse has no interest in something so political. *sigh* Maybe when my kids are more mature someday...

People on the internet sometimes tell lies or other forms of untrue statements. Some people, primarily in Western civilizations, think of this as “bad”. However, in certain other places - Russia, China, North Korea, etc. - being able to trick someone or manipulate them into doing what you want is extremely often considered “good” and even a form of highly adaptive behavioral intelligence, aka cunning.
Those of us in Western civilizations look at this and remember when we grew out of it in our childhoods, having been taught differently. However, around the world, such behavior is encouraged rather than frowned upon.
