Weird that it happened twice

I haven't played either, but I am a trans gal. For those that have:
Would you recommend them?
What exactly makes the games such apparent trans icons?
It's not the games, it's the dev who came out. It's just a joke.
They are very good games if you enjoy and incredibly good metroidvania platformer. Hollow Knight is the first one, it's great. It gets pretty difficult at the end.
Silksong is the sequel, it's also great, but also so much harder, too hard for me. I had to bail out about halfway through. Too bad too, they are both masterpieces, I wish I could turn down the difficulty and experience the full game.
Thanks!
it's madeline celeste all over again, but we're happy for hornet silksong's creator
Been meaning to play skong. I have heard it can be frusteratingly difficult but also i thought that about the first game until i played it again and it felt easy.
I will die on this hill, but I hate the "souls-likes are hard" bullshit fans always push. I think it makes some people feel good about themselves or something. They're honestly almost all pretty easy though. In a normal game, when you die you reload and lose progress. In a souls-like you keep some of your progress. The good ones are also built to be easy if you're paying attention. Yeah, brute forcing a boss can be a challenge, but that's not your only (or best) option, unlike most other games where that's a requirement. They give you so many choices to do other things and come back stronger that they really aren't that hard, outside of some optional challenges or challenge runs.
Theyre hard in the same way that simon says is hard. With enough game knowledge it can begin to feel trivial.
The analogy is correct, but it isn't just game knowledge. It's just that they ask you to pay attention. If you do, most bosses have weaknesses that the game tries to tell you.
The first one is a LOT easier. There’s a nice tutorial and it builds on itself. The tutorial for silksong is hollow knight. It’s made to be hard. They did update it to be a little easier a few weeks after launch though.
Feel like Silksong frontloaded a lot of difficulty personally. After I built up a kit I didn't really have any more "Try this fight 30 times" situations.
I got to the last few bosses in act 3 and then got sidetracked by something else for a while which was a big mistake. Now I just have hard bosses and nothing else so I've been a bit stuck. I know I CAN beat them, but it will take a lot more work than if I were to just have pushed through initially. I think I'll probably just restart soon and commit to doing it all this time.
Until you get to act 3, and then it ramps up again.
Can't speak for everyone ofc, but the swamp boss was the only really painful part and that was mostly due to runback. Nothing else really fucked me up like some of those act 1 bosses
I still dud but only because I kept experimenting with my loadout and nothing worked for me until I found the set that worked for me
I keep not finishing the first one.
I just really, really hate the corpse run bullshit. Every time I die, I'm forced to trek back to the exact spot I died before doing anything else, which is a stupid mechanic for a game that's about exploration and discovery.
I know it's a masterpiece and all, and I'm glad it's sucessful, but that mechanic just annoyed me too much, and I spend half the time just stewing over how much I hate that aspect. I realize after a few hours that the frustration over it, even if it's overblown, keeps me from enjoying the game.
I'm glad other people love it.
One of the run-backs near the end of Silksong was so egregious that I literally quit my run and watched a youtube playthrough of the rest of the game. I’ve never done that before.
Maybe you should try dying less
I don't really mind it. But I do agree that it just... Doesn't feel necessary. Mina the Hollower was another game I overall liked, where the soul dropping mechanic was just, superfluous
Yeah that's part of what made me quit the initial time i played it. The second time years later it just didn't bother me as much. I was also dying a lot less too since I knew many enemy patterns already and had gotten better at platformers.
I felt the same way. However I put down the controller and walked away from Silksong much earlier than I anticipated, earlier than Hollow Knight. Gonna have to give it a go from where I left off, which is before the end of Chapter 1.
It does get easier on replay, even if you didn’t get very far. Restarting makes you realize how many of the game mechanics that you picked up and it makes it easier to progress. Completely understandable if you don’t have the time to commit to perfectly executing diagonal pogos until you can get the Hollow Knight adjacent crest.
It's hard... But like so good tho
im very out of the loop on these games. whats so trans about them?
This is me just riffing off of trans memes that I've seen online, and the fact that apparently I have a very (egg) state of mind naturally, but it seems to me that trans people really resonate with games that are all about overcoming extreme challenges, in which the player character gradually builds more experience and capabilities and undergoes a transformation of sorts in which you unlock capabilities that don't necessarily make the game easier, but increase the scope of what you're capable of and gives you more tools to work with. Also stories that deal with themes of loneliness, belonging, finding your place in the world, building up allies who can aid you in your struggle. Games like Celeste and silksong are kind of like riffs on the hero's Journey, where the main character becomes who they were always meant to be through a long struggle and a process that's a combination of determination, trial and error, and fate.
Thank you so much for explaining this. Like, fr. I couldn't figure out why all of us seem to have the same set of favourite games (well, except Celeste, of course; that one's obvious).
Celeste is also about those themes
It is, I meant it's the only one of those games that I knew why so many of us like it.
The lead programmer. ^/s^
More seriously in the first one you fight the silksong, then in the second you become the silksong.
Characters are cute little bugs :3
