Not ban-free, just easier to not care if you get banned by an idiot as you can make your own community with the same name on a different instance if you think a moderator is being dumb, and can move your account to a different instance if an admin is being dumb. If other people think you're doing a better job, then your new community will outgrow the older one.
With reddit, there's only one community with each name, one set of admins, and one way to access things, so if something like this incident happened there, anyone affected would be totally fucked.

I took it to mean all the comments to posts that say nothing except like the singular word "paywalled", essentially blaming OP for not doing the work to set up an alternative option for them (which rises to a special height of irony when multiple such options exist in the post body that such commenters obviously did not read).
Edit: but here I was talking about the keyword "paywalled", although are you saying that archive sites are also filtered? The archive.is site has been caught altering the content of supposedly "archived" content, so that one in particular I could see being filtered for non-technical newbies who don't know that.

Hard agree - transparency is important.
Fortunately, this entire filter list can be turned off by the users at any time, for those who want a more unfiltered experience (although atm it's all-or-nothing iirc).
(Though reportedly the OTHER, smaller instance hard-coded list cannot be disabled now except by using db0's fork of the codebase.)

Didn't delete it. Just renamed it and rebased the git history to 2023 so that I can't sync any future changes to my fork and that my commits telling him to eat shit aren't visible in the repo diff

The issue isn't even primarily the bundling of a personal blocklist with the software. It's that it's not only on by default, but actively obscured and throwing misleading errors to prevent users an admins from understanding what is happening.
