History MemesI think the way Jane Austen is subversive it lost on modern audiences, because it requires cultural context which doesn't exist. It's actually dry as fuck. Like not as in a "well you just don't get it" sort of way, but the narrative is actually just super fucking basic without the companion commentary explaining the historical context. Nobody in the modern era who picks up the books appreciates this without that background education, and a huge number of fans like them unironically as romantic period dramas.
This is like me reading The Great Gatsby in high school. "An asshole throws some parties, then another asshole runs someone over with their car. No one learns anything from this."
For me, it was "Lost in Translation". Just a millionaire who is bored in a hotel.

I watched that. And that's literally all I remember of it
I believe it was Clerks 2 that gave us this amazing review of the Lord of the Rings movies as just being 3 movies of people walking places, and I love the LotR trilogy, but yeah. To quote: Even the fucking trees walked in those movies.

Period dramas and the original novels they are based on are old timey soap operas.

That's literally right. The "soap" in Soap Opera was about the ads for household cleaning products to hit target demos in the early TV decades.
It's that soap operas are period dramas adapted to a new period.
Humans love drama
In the 80s, as kids, we did that too, even though there were 4 channels on tv, Atari, and books.
Going to a friends house and meeting new people regularly is valid entertainment.

I was the perfect demographic for this book when it came out, a young teenager in the throes of the zombie trend, but I just could not get through it.
Brutal, but true.
