Prior to the fateful Battle of Omdurman on September 2, 1898, the Sudanese leader, Khalifa Abdallahi ibn Muhammad, held a meeting with his top generals and emirs to decide how to confront General Kitchener’s approaching Anglo-Egyptian army.

General Ibrahim al-Khalil strongly urged a stealthy, nighttime assault against the British encampment. The generals rightly recognized that British machine guns, artillery, and gunboat would be severely neutralized or blinded by the pitch-black darkness, leveling the playing field for a close-quarters melee. Historically, this night attack was exactly what General Kitchener feared most.

However, the Khalifa believed that a surprise night attack went against the noble traditions of the Mahdia holy war. He was convinced that charging the enemy in the full radiance of daylight—right after morning prayers—would ensure that Allah witnessed their courage and bestowed his divine blessing upon them.

His 50,000-strong army charged across an open plain in broad daylight the following morning. They marched directly into the devastating, long-range fire of 44 modern artillery pieces and 20 Maxim machine guns. The Sudanese forces were cut down before they could ever reach the British lines, resulting in nearly 12,000 Mahdist deaths in a matter of hour, while the British force only suffered 48 casualty.
