GreentextI feel like race is pretty irrelevant to this story. Boy gets lost, locals help him find his way. The fact he was white and they were black is only relevant because we're expected to relate to the boy's fear of black people.
It's relevant if we assume it's america, because the white suburban middle-class american assumption is that all poor black people will murder and kill you and have no human decency. When of course, the truth is most folks in these places are decent and the crime is minority of the residents who are in gangs and other organized activities.
And trust me, tons of these people exist. I meet live in a city full of folks who claim to be liberal progressives but are utterly terrified to be in the same restaurant as anyone black. The racism is really really deep here, esp among those who claim they aren't racist because they watched Get Out and read White Fragility, so they can't possibly be racist!
But people are dumb monkeys and fear is one of our most powerful/driving emotions, to the point it's the an amazing tactic for fueling brain-rot political takes and policies based in 'black people are all bad people' nonsense. And also, more lately, latino immigrants from south america whose skin color has any significant melanin.
Even if they are criminals, they don't want cops on their turf. The best neighbors I've ran into were deep in the ghetto on a street with 3 sell houses.
The feeling you guy might get in "hoods" is the same feeling I, as a European get all over the US. I mean completely unrelated to race, just because many of you have guns and there's much more violence and insanity in general.
That being said. Nobody tried to rob me and most people were very friendly. There where a few scammers though, I witnessed some disturbing stuff on the metro and I also witnessed a woman attacking a guy in a car which resulted in having her arm being stuck in the window and being dragged a few meters by the car.
I think this is just normal. I felt the same way traveling in Europe. I think it's just the combination of being in an unfamiliar place and standing out as a traveler. A lot of scammers target travelers intentionally.
I experienced the opposite feeling, spent my high school summers in London and always felt like laughing when people would warn us off rough neighborhoods that were safer than the safe neighborhoods where I was from.
It has gotten much less violent here since then.

You know, while there are places you don't want to get lost in if you're white, they aren't as common as the racists make it out to be. Now, I've worked in a couple of those neighborhoods, but even then once the folks literally coming out of bushes knew I was there to provide care to someone, that was the end of it.
Being real, my cracker ass grew up in a black neighborhood. You know how many times I got jumped by black folks? Zero. Wanna guess how many times I did by white folks? Well, only three, twice by the same assholes, but that's still telling, aint it?
My personal experience? Only time you'll run into trouble for being a cracker is if its a heavy drug area and you ain't buying. But those folks will be just as harsh to anyone, so I dunno if that counts or not.

They're making a point about how race is a human construct created to separate humans for the purpose of power. The idea of race didn't exist until the 1750's or so when Linneaus categorized people based on geographic location and racist stereotypes.

Given that the races aren't homogenously mixed, there is no way that it wouldn't be true that most violence is intra rather than inter just by sheer proximity. These are just the correct words to use.

Racial profiling is bad. Profiling based on where you are is not necessarily bad. If I were to find myself in a bad part of town and a group of guys came up to me, it wouldn't matter if they were black, Hispanic, white, or Asian; I'm going to be nervous. Meth and other hard drugs know no race.
