Imgur is now app-gated

Went to browse imgur today in my browser, and this pop-up appears when trying to swipe past the first post. There is no way around it that I can see. Looks like the only way to access content is now via the app.
So I guess in not using it anymore.. (Also, ironic first post).
My old ass just thinks of imgur as the site we used to have to use to host photos you wanted to share on forums.
I dont think I've ever visited it to just browse photos for fun.
I go for the meme dumps. Also the politics is surprisingly extremely progressive.
I used to like, 10-15 years ago. It wasn't amazing, but it filled that role of a place to doom scroll. Then they forced all this crap into the site to make it more "social" completely ruining whatever little bit of good the site had.
It's a shame because I do kinda miss it sometimes. It was like browsing r/all but with several times the content. Having no separate subreddits/communities meant you could see such a massive variety of content that not even reddit at it's peak could quite match.
And users instantly downvoted selfies, too, which was nice. Political stuff got tiring, but then there were sea slugs to cleanse that.
I did a few times, it felt strange like wandering around the back rooms at the mall or something like that
It’s purpose was literally for hosting hotlinked photos on sites that didn’t provide an upload; namely Reddit at the time
Amusingly, at some point there was a user base in that site that would criticize people who posted random images that got shared out on other sites. You could randomly find hate comments on your posts if you used it without adding any context
Oh, I recall. At the time there was an option of posting as "public" (which would appear on the Imgur feed) and "private" (which just gives you a link to use for other sites), and people would post all kinds of things to "public", including passport photos and personal stuff.
How bizarre.
I uploaded images of my Neopets for my Xanga to Photobucket.
They recently started geo fencing some of their images as well. This company is just all around awful.
It's just part of cycle. It seems like they either evolve into some kind of shitty funnyjunk-like community of shitposting and content theft or they just run out of funding and go defunct.
Ditch it.
Trying to force everyone to use their data scraper instead of a perfectly fine browser is a shithead move and you don't need that kind of loser company in your life.
Check out Pixelfed as a federated alternative. It’s similar to Imgur or Instagram
Very aware, I have 2 accounts :)
Unfortunately it doesn't have the content that I'm looking for (meme dumps, politics news).
Be the shitpost you want to see in the world
Imgur has been awful for so long now
Can't even use it in the uk. Makes some posts here on lemmy unviewable
Wow, I’m sure no child will ever come to harm ever in the UK now. Very safe!
Working fine for me too. Seems to be a case of c/fuckyouinparticular
Just thought to check on my partner's phone - different os, different service provider, same problem.
It could still be geofencing, we're both in Australia..
Worked same as always in Waterfox on Android just now. I didn't even get that pop-up.
I have no use for it anymore, hadn't looked at it in a while.
Edit: Works fine on desktop browser as well.
Which phone browser are you using?
Might also be a partial rollout to check reception and / or technical issues. I personally try to avoid any site that does this
Huh. Weird. I get it on both Firefox and the native android browser.
I'm in Aus, I wonder if it's regional?
Try Waterfox. It strips out some bs and has better blocking of this crap, far as I can tell. They also made a promise not to use AI.

oh, yeah, also, I have uBlock Origin extension running. Should help.
And, I'm just noticing, might be differences because you're on IOS, which I'm not familiar with currently.
Speaking of, could OP try Origin's zapper to remove the popup while continuing to navigate the site?
It's worked for me on some sites.
I have uBlock Origin already installed. And on android.
there's another extension called BehindTheOverlay that works well for things like this
BehindTheOverlay
Thanks! But I tried it, and it gets rid of the modal, but doesn't reenable swiping, so the site is still effectively useless
It's happening on two separate browsers, I don't see why a fork of one of then would help?
When Reddit started doing this, the workaround was to clear out your Reddit cookies. They apparently keep track of how often you visit, and once you hit a certain threshold a banner appears. Maybe that will work for Imgur too.
Nope. Cleared all my imgur related cookies, still happening.
You tried the option for desktop site, of course?
Edit: Nevermind saw this in a comment below and your reply
Request Desktop Website, or whatever the option is called in your browser.
It doesn't show the pop-up, works like normal. To be expected I guess, since the app isn't for desktops. But it's also not super usable on a phone. But yeah, it's a work-around, I guess.
Bro actually got an infinite amount of tabs
More than 99. They just get dumped out of memory, so there's not really a down side.. I clean then up when I can be bothered.
Imgur died when they deleted all the porn.
Lemmy is becoming more like Reddit by the day. You should be happy when an app gets worse or gives you a chance to leave. It allows you to think about why you were using it at all in the first place.
