Just got done watching the shōgun show. Yeah, warriors will take every advantage.

Explanation: Japanese samurai are often associated with the katana, the sword of the aristocratic class of mid-late 2nd millennium AD Japan.

... but the traditional weapon of samurai is the bow, and when samurai were introduced to firearms, they wasted no time in widespread adoption during the high-conflict Sengoku Jidai period!

There's a good Japanese historical fiction film set in the 1860s in the countryside when a lot of things were changing for the samurai class. It has a funny scene where a guy comes out from Tokyo to explain western weaponry and when one of the samurai says he can't understand the explanation the Tokyo guy gets exasperated and calls them dumb hicks.

The sword was also a sidearm

But, a spear doesn't look as good in movies

Donnie Yen makes it look good in Hero:

But I'm a bit biased towards spearmen.

Pitt made it look awesome in Troy.

If a hiatorical japanese text praises a samurai's swordsmanship, it's usually a polite way to say he sucked.
