What client do Android users use for Lemmy these days? I've been using Jerboa from the start but it's a bit basic and lacks any good search functionality. So I want to try some others. What do other Android users recommend?
Things I like about Jerboa:
- It just works. It's pretty simple.
- It has actual private browsing in app. You never have to leave the app and it knows how to never save your history.
- It can do the above even when setting your main browser to Firefox (so as blocking works even in open links in app).
Things I don't like about Jerboa:
- Text entry is oftentimes buggy.
- Lack of any decent search for communities or in threads.
- No draft capability.
Jerboa
I'm using boost now but I miss the swipe to upvote feature I used to have on sync. Any recommendations? That swipe feature was great and made it so easy to throw a vote out there.
Connect has that.
None. Just use the website.
I use Connect and haven't had any complaints.
As a primarily iPhone user, I get a thrill using Voyager on my Android phone. It's basically an Apollo clone, and Apollo was iOS only (for Reddit). IIRC Voyager is based on its released source code. The Apollo dev was never gonna code for Android, but he didn't stop others from doing so, and they did. I also like the client. On iOS, I use it for my Piefed account because of its support for that branch (fork?) of Lemmy. On iOS for this account, I use Mlem, which I believe is iOS only.
I'm happy with Voyager on Android, but I'm certainly open to alternatives. I want to keep one app that can switch between the two, so it needs Lemmy and Piefed support. I also like the comfortable interface with previews, the ability to blur/hide NSFW on a toggle (like if I'm out in public vs at home), and swipe controls (upvote, downvote, reply, and save). Easy access to blocking is also important (e.g. on this account I browse /all).
As we are talking about browsers... I use Boost, but would like the option of downloading 'all, -top six hours' including comments, for offline browsing (Perhaps up to a maximum size). Any recommendations please?
That WOULD be neat.
Voyager for me. The compact mode is fairly compact, with small enough thumbnails that it can feel text-first. The few others that support piefed have had huge images with no easy way to fix that.
I haven't found anything better than Jerboa. To me, the only flaw is that it will never, ever support piefed.
It's the closest to the RIF experience.
I t4ied only Interstellar and settled on Summit. Back when piefed social was new I got on board fairly early and interstellar IIRC was one of the first to have piefed support. Then summit came with the support and I never left since. Sorry Interstellar, Summit just have the UX I prefer back when I used Sync for reddit. Sync for lemmy didn't have piefed support back then.
I like Boost.
Last time I said this, I got shunned for recommending a closed-source app. I generally try to stick to open-source, but Boost has a good UI, works well, and bugs are fixed quickly.
I'm also using boost but "bugs are fixed quickly" isn't my experience.
I started using Boost during round 1 of the API debacle when Reddit is Fun got the axe. Boost was still up & going so I used it there for a couple months before it got killed, then came here & kept up with it.
I haven't had any major issues, just the occasional hiccup like spoiler markup formatting or other weird interactions.
My web browser lol
Browser
This! Don't know why you would need something else.
Boost
Isn't it closed source and serves ads?
It doesn't serve ads if you pay for it - I used it for Reddit and moved over during the API debacle and I haven't had any issues with it personally.
I tried a bunch and settled on Voyager. I also liked Thunder.
Same, I tried them all and Voyager was my favourite
It's also nice to recommend because it's on iOS too
Voyager for me.
Thunder is also good.
I'm sad that Voyager is just a webapp and not a native client; but apart from that, I think it's perfect.
Wait what? Voyager is a native client, I'm using the version I downloaded from the Google Play store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.vger.voyager
I'm on voyager and it does the job. I miss sync though.
Summit wins out
Agreed. I just wish they would get the PieFed post combining happening so we didn't see the same article posted four times in a row. The PieFed PWA does it right. Might be an API issue though.
Like most people, I've tried many apps, and chose summit because, in addition to it having everything I'm looking for in an app, it doesn't eat my battery like the other apps. Thunder was good, but it drained my battery so fast, it was just crazy.
Agree on that
Agreed, I've tried all the ones mentioned so far and some others but Summit is the only one that doesn't have annoyances and drawbacks for what I want.
Still using the browser! Works just fine.
I use Firefox and have no idea why you'd need a dedicated app.
who cares why someone might prefer or be interested or i suppose even "need" an app. why you gotta throw shade just bc you prefer a browser?
found the app dev
loll
Hey a fellow Jerboa user! I'm also in the Jerboa camp, just because it's so simple. I'll use it to load my subscriptions if I'm waiting at a dentist or something.
boost and voyager
I'm quite happy with Thunder
I really enjoyed using Thunder but then found Summit, which offers one killer feature Thunder doesn't have while covering everything that Thunder has:
Multi-communities!
I got several gaming-related communities grouped, all the selfhosting communities grouped and I just need to check those multi-communities instead of each community one by one.
Also Summit works a bit better for Piefed than Thunder, but I know that is work in progress, so no criticism there.
Me too. But it refuses to load images of a fraction of the posts and I don't really know why. And cross linking to some other instances is occasionally borked, it tries and then opens the browser.
Apart from that it's been fantastic
Same here, thunder refuses to load images seemingly randomly.
Another vote for Thunder, though I'm also kind of warming up to Summit.
After much complaining about sync's descent into mediocre abandonware, i finally switched to Summit - i still miss sync's ui/ux - but its nice being able to use a non buggy product
Sync was borderline abadonware even as a reddit third party app before reddit closed the gates.
Likewise. I left Reddit when they killed third party apps because Sync was Reddit to me. I stuck with it here for a lot longer than I should have, but I finally accepted that it was dead and settled on Summit after trying a few others. Connect is also good, but I felt like it wasn't quite as flexible as Summit last I tried.
Summit for me. I've tried most of the others mentioned so far but always stick to summit.
Eternity til it dies
I'm using Voyager and happy with it. Of course, now. I need to trial these listed by others.
Most of the time, sync, because I prefer my scrolling and reading on a tablet, and having dual columns that are easy to parse is more important than most other factors.
Boost is my backup for the same reason, since so far all the otherwise great lemmy first apps don't do dual column well, when they do it at all.
That being said, check out connect, summit, and thunder. All damn fine apps overall
Voyager as PWA through Chrome. Unfortunately. There's just no other way I've found to easily copy anything I see on screen, be it any link or photo, to share it with others. It's my issue with so many platforms...
This way I can just long press anything and share.
Summit! Being using it since my lemmy day 0
Boost
Boost is the best for me!
Voyager is all I've ever used to access Lemmy.
Sync still works great and is tighter than basically everything else. The other apps have made MONSTROUS strides in the past couple years, but I still have sync set up pretty close to how I want it. But, what I really truly want is Baconreader for fediverse.
Interstellar
me too. It's pretty good, or at least it suits me.
I really like Raccoon, Summit, and Connect a lot. I switch around between them just for shits and giggles; they're all great apps with cool, active developers. I'm currently writing this with Raccoon.
Just tried Raccoon and the level of post customization is really nice. But it doesn't have a mark as read button which it kinda annoying.
Boost
Connect. It felt most like RIF, so I stuck with it
I used to use it as well because it was the closest to rif, but it had a lot of limitations compared to summit, I'm glad I made the switch.
Sync. But I'm an old guy with habits that are hard to change
I stayed with sync until I was forced to switch due to bugs and missing features, I all alternatives I could find and settled on Summit. Highly recommend, it has a ton of options and both looks and feels great to use.
You'll probably be forced to change your habit soon.
I use the browser and have no idea why you'd need a dedicated app
I also use Jerboa and I have never tried anything else. It's great imo but lacking in the more interesting features I have seen from other clients. User tagging is super cool
Frankly I just use the website installed as a web app. I'm quite happy with it. I lost a bit on the ux of thread closing but I get access to the emoji picker from my instance which is invaluable.
Always used Thunder. Open source, on F-Droid. Works well, even takes suggestions for features on Lemmy.
Eternity and sometimes voyager
Really don't know what I'll do when Eternity stops working
Try voyager, last time I checked, eternity was not maintained.
