This guy got death penalty with reprieve, which means he almost certainly wont die https://global.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202602/28/WS69a2e9f2a310d6866eb3adfd.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_sentence_with_reprieve
I mean, did they fix the systemic problems that allowed this to happen in the first place? Are these death sentences actually carried out? Still a mile better than Amerikkkan "justice" but too much of this reeks of an attempt to placate rather than actually fix anything.
Those are good questions, but I don't think this "reeks of an attempt to placate" either.
But, but, laws are only supposed to apply to the poor. This is authoritarianism!
Unfortunately Chinese justice system tends to commute these to life sentences after a couple years. Same in Vietnam. Is the tactic to scare these scumbags or something?
I assume the point is to get them to cooperate and force them into a "no seriously stop doing shit, don't try to keep wielding power or doing more crimes, sit down, shut up, and do your time" position without the consequences of actually just executing them. Like in practical terms what's the difference between "they're sitting in a cell and can't keep being the ringleader of something or trading favors or whatever because if they do that's it for them" and "they're actually gone forever, but someone had to do it to them"? In the latter case you've made someone deal with killing them, and you also have no further stick to force them to not fight back as hard as they can before that point with every connection or hidden asset they may have.

I'm not sure exactly but it's gotta be worth a ton
