I wasn't even the mod involved in this until they decided to spew abuse at me in a completely unrelated community that I do mod. Ugh. Why are people like this, and why are so many of them on this platform?

Edit: If this is too close to the spirit of rule 5, I apologize and no hard feelings if you remove it. Trying to make a general point here and anonymized all the identifying bits.

Edit 2: Some of you recognized the user despite my attempts to anonymize things. While it's all there in the modlog, please don't doxx the user as I'm only highlighting the behavior and have already reported them via proper/official channels and shown them the door for the little communities I run.

My guess is there are so many people like that because its all the problematic people that got banned on reddit. They cant be assholes there, so they come here thinking they can get away with it

lol, so true.

Why are people like this, and why are so many of them on this platform?

It seems like it would be so exhausting with little to no benefit. Then again, some people just thrive on chaos and drama to the point where if there's not enough naturally existing, they create it. It's basically like sex or hardcore drugs for them. How do you get people to stop liking sex and drugs when bans are basically the equivalent of giving them a buzz and an orgasm all at once?

As for why so many are on the platform, I have a theory: They get banned from the other places. Eventually the barrier on ban evasions gets beyond their pay grade, so they fuck off elsewhere for a bit to sow chaos in new territory. Seems like a majority of the people who organically share their Fediverse origin story are along the lines of either "I left Reddit because Reddit did X" (ex: API ban) or "I got permabanned from Reddit because I said puppies are cute" -- and let me tell you, if you go and look at the puppies are cute user's Fediverse profile, more often than not, you'll quickly start to realize why another platform might've had motivation to shoo them off.

Hehe I add a label to any user who complains about being banned from Reddit...

How you guys adding labels? I'd like to do that, but I don't see any option to.

Some clients have the feature, and it's built-in on piefed I think.

Could it be it's some kind of narcissism?

it's an effective way to get someone's attention

Lol, I should have indicated I was speaking rhetorically but that's pretty much all true and matches what I've seen from the people with that particular flavor of origin story.

The third aspect is you can't actually ban anyone because they just spin up a new alt and start the same shit all over again.

While that's true, fediverse mods and admins are MUCH faster and more diligent about clamping down on this stuff.

Even though we can't all be around at all times, the ones that are instantly start freezing out the offender on the community and instance level.

It really doesn't take long for walls to come up around problem users.

And if the user escalates... well.

I'm particularly thankful for the way the fediverse seems to have collectively agreed that the second you wish death upon someone, you're just out. It's not up for discussion at that point. No slaps on the wrist, none of the admins want to host that stuff, so the moment a report reaches them, that user(name) is simply gone.

They forgot they aren’t on Reddit? That is heinous.

Oh, that reminds me someone I banned some months ago. It went like this:

OP shared some on-topic but borderline NSFW content, in a comm I mod. I requested (not demanded; just requested) OP to use the NSFW tag, so people (incl. me) could go wild discussing it, without making others uncomfortable. OP did it just fine, no issue, I know that poster and they're a fairly reasonable person.

Then a second user started stirring shit up about my request. Their complain was TL;DR "I assume you're overly sensitive, grow a thick skin" and using an ableist slur as a slur, in a way that targets a marginalised group. I gave them a 3d ban. Just three days, as it was first offence… and because if you give this sort of user enough rope, they'll quickly find a way to ban themselves.

Bingo. And as soon as I banned them, they started DM'ing me. Ban elevated to permaban, messages reported, and admins eventually banned them. :-)

I'm pretty sure these are trolls trying to make your life harder. You probably have a nice community.

Thanks! I immediately thought they were a troll, but I can't really act on assumptions, so… I let the troll out themself, then act.

I go the opposite route. I ban them for a day or so. If it's a troll, they go away and create a new account. If it's a real person, I have a discussion with them or I check on them once they come back. It's worked out pretty well for the community.

Also account deletion.

That person went really off the rails in DMs, and all I did was comment.

They should learn to deal with facts before they go suggesting others struggle with "opinions".

For anyone unaware, this was the user that posted "autism isn't real" in unpopularopinion and basically got told "that's just ignorance, not an opinion".

To be fair, that's a lot of posts in UnpopularOpinion.

Still not a reason for things not to end in them going "waaah, why won't you validate and upvote my bigotry?!".

I'm assuming this is with relation to the YPTB thread accusing Kaplan and the world admins of being Zionist? I had a hunch there was more to the story.

That user would never have said the R word or called them an F as an insult.

They’ve now instance banned another user for calling their organisation ZioNazis, so that post is entirely related to what it says it is in the post.

Not to my knowledge, but I'm also out of that loop since I've defedded YPTB's entire instance because of shit like that.

Fair enough and rather a common sentiment. I think that's about the only community there I follow and mostly to observe.

I know it gets a bit fractious and isn't for everyone, but imo YPTB provides a useful way to track mod abuses across instances, and works as a disincentive for mods/admins to abuse their powers. Of course, it isn't always a pleasant experience to be dragged in there, but it does make one think twice before acting, which has a moderating effect.

I don't disagree. That's actually the reason I tend to observe it. I never made accusations against it. But it's obvious at this point that's what this is getting made into. And it is my fault after all when I assumed.

Agreed. You just have to filter through the crap in there.

It's a valuable community if you take it with a grain of salt.

I don't know why our instance is being dragged into this post, the DM was from a piefed.social account. If any of our users sent a DM like that they would be instantly home banned from our instance, fwiw.

Whomst

I have seen no reports

Looks like they self deleted.

A simple mistake. Dub and others have told me that I am mistaken and I'm just going to leave it at that. I was just wondering if it was connected to the drama that was going on over in a thread there in a singular community. They say no. Then no it isn't.

What does that have anything to do with the post?

This is a poor attempt of discrediting YPTB’s concerns.

That is a separate issue.

It was an honest question. It had less to do with YPTB, and more to do with an individual well known to be rather bristly. Even if I do find myself generally agreeing with them otherwise. Someone who themselves has had threads in YTPB about them as well. But your need to make this about attacking YPTB really shows your unfounded conspiratorial mindset. If you have a need to feel persecuted. Tell yourself whatever you need though. It doesn't bother me one way or the other. And if it's a separate issue fair enough I will admit that I'm wrong.
