Before the US Civil War, the Mexican-American War broke out. This is widely considered, including by contemporaries, to be one of the least justified major wars the USA ever engaged in. For this reason, many Irish-American troops deserted to serve the Mexican cause in Saint Patrick's Battalion.
Funny enough, after the US Civil War, US troops on the southern border would be 'unofficially' involved in gunrunning to Mexican Republican movements against the European-imposed monarchy (which had invaded Mexico during the US Civil War to overthrow the Mexican government).

Okay that ignores a long history of closeness between Ireland and Mexico. This is another point in that history of closeness, not the start of it

Ha, I have to admit that Irish-Mexican diplomatic history isn't a strength of mine, so consider it less 'ignored' and more 'ignorant of'!
if there is ever an underdog in any conflict, Ireland is their friend and has been forever. except maybe north korea i don't know about that one. but like look at palestine, the history is there. at least those two sitiations and nations, that is what i have learned about.
international geopolitics is not my strength either (especially now after putain and krasnov fucked over and ruined the international alliances what helped the stability i grew up with), just i remember a few points and that is one of them that i can remember. underdogs = ireland is their friend. probably.
Ireland has an embassy there but NK isn't nearly the same as Mexico or Palestine. They tend to support smaller nations who have been oppressed by larger nations (for some mysterious reason!)
yeah a famine that was entirely an economic decision by the ruling class tends to give generational pitchforks and torches for some reason.
