2 dogs, 2 cats, currently four chicks in a brooder in the back room, sage, palo santo, nag champa, paint. TBF, nobody knows because I hate having company but I assume that no matter how much I clean nor how often I open the windows it has a distinct smell.
Cat houses. Ugh. Dogs havent been as bad. But when people have cats its usually bad
Dude, I went to my friend's place and it smelled like kitty litter or something cat related. I couldn't believe how strong it was ...
Your nose really said this is your problem now and adapted 😂
I'm South East Asian. I feel that when white people come into my house I should apologize or hand them a gasmask.
Antique smell sparks memories of my grandma's house. Being a few years out of my parent's house, and I get similar smells from their house now. Not sure how I feel about that.
You might be one of those rare people that can smell Alzheimer’s.
I grew up with a strict 15 minutes daily of "all the windows open no matter what the temperature".
Does wonders, and 15 minutes is nothing for the thermal inertia of the house.
It's reinvigorating, too.
Are you German by any chance?

Stoßlüften, 5 Minuten!
My scoutmaster’s house was a fucking pigsty. I still remember the smell and piles of junk…
The man had it out for me and was a pretty sad sack for zeroing in on a child while he was in his 50s. He used to rail on me for kicks and is the reason I left the scouts; made life but then said no.
Now his disgusting ass house is in my rearview mirror while I still live rent free in his tiny brain. I make more in a year than his stunted ass made in a decade while I hear tales of him mentioning me to new scouts… years after the fact.
All this is to say yea someone’s smell turned into a saga and I have lived it down. Meanwhile, with any luck their body burns up and fertilizes the rice fields of china with the cinders of his dead remains. *shellac
Sorta reads like he's in your head, rent free. Not the other way around.
Shoutout for the bonus and totally-unrelated "China bad" comment. Bigotry and Boy Scouts, who would have thought? Oh, everyone.
How is saying china has rice fields "china bad" lmfao.
I live in a constant state of anxiety that people feel that way about my house but are just too nice to say anything
When was the last time you steam cleaned your rugs and couches and chairs?
Go away for a weekend and when you come back, that’s what others smell.
We have 2 dogs, so I get a little paranoid that our house has dog smell. So it's always a relief to come back from a few days away to find that it just smells completely normal.
Never been to a house of people that have dogs and there wasn't a dog smell.
Share your secrets
Honestly I don't know! The main level of our house is all wood floors which probably helps. But other than that we don't have any unusual cleaning practices.
Maybe I have a kind of long term nose blindness that persists for days. 🤷♂️
I guess some dog breeds smell more than others
It's the reason I buy so many candles. I can cheat the system.
Oh god that’s so much worse.
Now your house smells like candles and that.
One friend lives in an old house with a gas leak
Drove me fucking nuts
That sounds…irresponsible
I love that the gas leak is just accepted as a feature of the home, like bay windows or a sunken living room.
Without the gas leak the rent would be almost double.
But the gas bill....
Knew a family that had a gas leak, it was underground near the house though.
They’d had the gas company there multiple times, but in the end just shrugged and said it wasn’t dangerous and never found or fixed it.
That sounds insane... Crazy dangerous
It was too diffused to locate it apparently. And it was a fairly rich neighborhood too. Not very near where I lived thankfully.
I know somebody whose house blew up from a gas leak, killed one of the tenants. The one that the landlord paid $7 an hour to help change the hot water heater and did it wrong. The ATF investigated and declared an oopsie. Dead guys dumbass wife despite knowing there's a gas leak and being told not to light a cigarette lit a cigarette.
I've changed a gas water heater before, and I can confirm that you have to be a dumbass not to be real careful to do it right, especially if you live in the house!
I have changed several. Have yet to kill anybody.
That you know of
The city I changed them in would have had me crucified if I killed someone with my work, the homeowner gets a pass.
"Lives?" Present tense?!
Unfortunately. Been a while since I visited
Then he should at least fix it himself, if for some reason calling the landlord or the fire department aren't options.
Growing up, one of our elderly cats started pooping on the floor almost daily, and even before that she refused to bury it in the litter box. I can confirm you can get used to any smell to the point you barely notice it until you've spent time elsewhere.
(I hated living there)
Yeah, where I live. My roommates don't stay up on cleaning up after the dogs. The dogs don't mess in the house but the fur is EVERYWHERE! The house and yard isn't big enough for 3 dogs.
Well, they're kicking me put, so once I can find a new place, it won't be my problem anymore.
Some people with well water have water that just tastes awful and they think it tastes fine.
Everywhere but my house smells weird and it irks me almost as much as how nobody else notices everywhere smells weird.
If only your home smells "normal"... that says more about your home then anything else.
When I go away for some time my own home smells weird when I get home. It’s one of the many myriad reasons I dislike travel.
might be your nose?
