My dad used to ask me to scratch his bald spot when I was like gradeschool age. 25+ years later, he's still just that small spot in the back. My mom cuts his hair now, keeps it fairly short but I don't think it's even that noticeable now that it's all gray

I got lucky, though, and look way better bald than I ever did with hair, even before I started balding. Should have been buzzing it my whole life.
I’m right there with you. I had long hair for so long, cut it for a job and realized I was going bald. Ended up shaving it while depressed and immediately felt better after seeing the result. Kept it shaved since and no longer worry about it.
That’s my story exactly. Also, that last bit, that’s an under discussed element of it, you don’t worry about your hair anymore, at all. Ever. It’s literally not a thing anymore. I never realized how much I thought and stressed about my hair until I didn’t at all think or stress about it.
I can't wait for the cure for baldness and seeing the "bald" culture fight back against it.
Like all the "body positivity" people that were celebrating that fat people could still be fit and beautiful, and then the minute Ozempic hits the world, they all dropped half their body weight. Not so militant about being fat any more, eh?
I've always been conflicted about the body positivity movement. There is a lot if truth that people on the thicker side can actually be a healthy weight, but at the same time, telling obese people that they are fine as they are is like trying to normalize smoking.
What I do think is important is that someone's self-worth should never be tied to their weight. You're not a worse person than anyone else just because you're overweight, and no one should be treated badly because if it.
Overall, I think it's a mixed bag, but with more positives than negatives overall

I think that is more like a surgical procedure to move your existing hair around than a genuine cure, but you do have a point.
If it becomes dirt cheap to get the surgery done would "baldness" culture start fighting back? Hairless positivity, you don't need a scalpel to change who you are, Rogaine is no gain, toupee no way, chants for no transplants, 10's dig bald men, etc.
Lasik surgery exists and isn't all that expensive, but you still see plenty of people with glasses.
That's an imperfect fix iirc. It has risks and side effects and it's one of those things where you can only do it once or something.

Being bald is kinda badass. Balding is some middle aged dad shit.
Depends on the shape of your head though. I got a close shave when I was a kid but my head was shaped weird. Friends didn't let me forget it either.

Never beat yourself up for not realizing something sooner. The conditions that were required for understanding happened at the exact time they were supposed to.

Part of why it's important for people is their feeling of agency in their appearance.
The body positivity comes from the acceptance and welcome for what is seen as a very difficult hurdle for men to grasp and accept. R/Bald does that without ridicule or judgement.

Thinning hair is fine and mocking someone for it is mean and unhelpful, and body positivity is being cool if someone decides to stick with it. However it's not contradictory to say "given your situation you would look better bald tho".
A white lie is good when it's about something one can't (easily) change or when criticism is uncalled for. This is the opposite situation where the criticism is called for and the straightforward advice to go for it is cheap&easy to implement.
In fact if someone is actively seeking advice, I would argue that unconditionally saying "you look great don't change anything" is a form of toxic positivity.
It's complicated.
Society generally treats you better when buzzed compared to overly thinning, especially when dating. Ultimately it's a personal choice, but most guys are happy with the results and wish they did it sooner.
You can always do a comb-over if you really wanna go for style.

Started losing mine in college with a big widow's peak. I tried to avoid it by going Mohawk for a year or two before it connected leaving me with essentially a crazy clown tuft. But the bullet around 25 and haven't looked back. It's nice in hot weather though.

What I wonder is how that subreddit would respond if someone with good hair, or even just decent hair posted. Do they ever respond "no bro, you have good hair!" I would bet that it becomes a "when you have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail" type situation.

Not sure if this is a joke or not, but I recently learned that the same hormones that affect beard growth also contribute to baldness!
Having recently started estrogen, I can confirm that my beard growth has slowed dramatically and my once receding hairline is gradually filling itself back in.
I bet someone with good hair has asked, but I wonder what they replied.

I'm thinking the other way: if it ever happens to me, I'll just embrace the baldness. But I imagine it's a lot easier to say that now than it would be at the time.
Biggest hangup I think for men is "what if I have a weird shaped head" or something that looks strange to them. If I knew how I looked bald before I shaved it all, I would have done it sooner.
As someone who did just that, it’s all about perspective: balding is a condition; bald is a choice.
This! I'd much prefer to have a full head of hair, but since that's not an option, I prefer to be bald rather than visibly balding 🤷
(And getting surgery for this would feel excessive. Not to mention the transplanted hair would just start balding too because of the same hormones that caused balding in the first place, so it's just putting off the inevitable.)
After a transplant you usually have to take meds. Done quite a bit of research...very low risk of side effects. Most common is dick problems but I'm loaded up with SSRIs and it still works so I doubt I would have that side effect. The prescription is not free and I think is like 60 bucks a month the last I looked.
If you are starting to bald, and don't want to, the easiest option is to get on meds to keep what you already have. If you get side effects then you are SOL i suppose.
You can also do pretty good by changing your diet. Food that promotes circulation. I can cite a youtuber that got his hairline back by eating a fuck ton of watermelon. And I eat a fuck ton of watermelon anyway, maybe that's why my hairline is still my childhood hairline at age 32. Dad was balding at 25. Poor diet and too many trucker hats.
Transplant costs like 10k CAD in Turkey. Not an insurmountable amount of money IMO. The worst part is your nasty looking head for like a year after the procedure. After the transplant, all that hair will fall out again, and then you have to wait for it to grow back. The process can be quite humiliating as you can imagine as guys are expected to man up and shave their heads, not pay to win like this.
I dunno, I really like having long hair, I take immense pride in having nicer hair than most ladies and I enjoy taking care of it and seeing how long it can grow. I always wondered what a shower feels like with a bald head though! I have never had short hair in my entire life.
Now I want to do some gatekeeping. If you want to play in a metal band on stage, you need long hair, or you have no business being there. Haha.
