i prefer leather welding gloves to gardening gloves personally. you can pick up fire with them.

this is old info, cops have switched their radios to raspberry jam now

There's only one man who would dare to give me the raspberry!

EMS radios have by and large moved to proprietary digital encrypted systems. It’s not like it used to be.

It’s also a federal offense to jam a frequency. I understand that legality is not the point of the post, but it’s a different space entirely than having a bucket and safety glasses at a protest. The FCC doesn’t screw around and if you jam a frequency that’s shared with fire and EMS (and modern digital radios do that) you’re not going to have the jury on your side.

if you jam a frequency that’s shared with fire and EMS

first off, don't fuck with actual EMS. second off, jamming sets up a nice little electromagnetic flare that someone as stupid as me could triangulate your location with a bicycle and a radio. if i can do it, pretty damn sure they have a machine that can do it better. don't be stupid.

This part bothered me. It starts out saying "these things are legal to own" and then explicitly says to do something illegal.

Legality ≠ morality, but you should be clear when mixing legal and not legal things.

It's morally correct to smash a brick into a fascist government funded kidnapper's face. It's still illegal.

this post is strait out disinformation and should be taken down

It's not about being right.

It's about posing to randoms online about what a special little anarchist they are.

only part. could be just outdated.

the traffic cone bit worked in hong kong, for example: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-08-06/hong-kong-protesters-use-traffic-cones-against-tear-gas/11387296

umbrellas also helped to deflect stuff btw.

Which bit? The hardware store list? That's definitely true. The bucket thing? Obviously true, though you can just throw them back as an alternative. The scanner? My Nana had one in her sewing room and listened in all the time. Though they won't tell you what frequency they're on. ~~Jamming the frequency? Not sure if scanners do that, but it's not hard. Albeit a felony, but at that point shits out the window anyway.~~

Edit: I have been thoroughly informed regarding jamming.

Modern radio traffic is encrypted and those types of scanners don't really work anymore. It's a nice fantasy for keyboard warriors that they're gonna "hack" or "jam" the radios and dismantle fed operations, but it's just not realistic in the slightest. It'd be much more feasible (hypothetically, for the glowies in the room) to take a radio from someone in the field and monitor the traffic.

It wouldn't work for long, because as dumb as cops are, they do have intelligent support staff behind them who plan for that and would just switch everyone to a different channel and/or disable the stolen one as soon as it was known a radio was compromised. Radio activity is also very easy for the government to track and any rando trying anything better be ready for a platoon to be all over their ass in about half the time they think they will.

there are apps now. i have one on my phone for fire season. we get the local unencrypted PD and the local unencrypted EMS. They broadcast over shortwave and they also have the internet stations for everyone local who would be buying a scanner. saves us all a few moneys. they have the encrypted stations too, but i don't have the code.

That's really interesting. I haven't kept up on scanner technology. ~~Though jamming, on a pure technical level, is still relatively easy if you're willing to commit a serious felony and also fuck up your own communication in the process and, as you said, paint a bullseye on your back.~~

No.

This aint your nanas analog radios no more.

Digital radios are a lot better in dealing with "analog noise" on the channel.

Meaning u would need a need some advanced electronic warfare device that actually injects digital frames in the right frequency and timing to do anything.

And even then, modern devices can switch frequency automatic on the fly if they detect bad channel conditions. Adding to that is the inverse square law, meaning unless your jammer is very close, u would need gigantic amounts of power.

So unless u just happen to have something like a Boeing EA-18G Growler in your back pocket....i would advise you to not even try.

In todays world every cellphone tower is also a wide band SDR, many of them dumping raw IO data of the whole spectrum into a cache, this is usually used to track down problems with accidental frequency sources (broken switching power supplies and stuff like that) that can degrade cell service.

But u can be sure that the FCC and other 3 letter agency has access to this data cache, in real time and going back maybe even days.

So they dont even need to send out guys with triangulation gear, no they just do TDoA (Time Difference of Arrival) and have the signal source down to 1-2m in seconds (this works so well because Celltowers have GPS time and accurate location and thats all you need for TDoA signal finding).

With modern palantir like solution it can even be assumed that the whole thing is already automated, meaning the moment you switch your jammer on, the very moment, there is a automated system noticing the anomaly and sending out a alert with the pinpoint location and characteristics of the anomaly.

Given the precision of the triangulation it could automatically check near by connected cameras (flock etc) and probably deliver the face of the person who has the jammer in the backpack. Now they have your face, and with that they have everything.

So again...mere seconds after turning on a jammer they probably have your location down to 1m and your whole identity, and probably know what you ate for breakfast.

This isnt supposed to be fear mongering, just a explanation what is technical possible and why its a very very stupid idea to try to jam certain frequency's.

I have been humbled by my ignorance. Thank you for all this.
